Chapter 262

""Do you think I would believe anything you say?"" Joseph didn't even bother to look her in the eye.

Cassie lowered her gaze in silence; there seemed to be nothing left to say.

She picked up the pen and signed her name. The name ""Cassie"" had never felt so heavy.

""I'm done signing. I'll go upstairs to pack and leave right away.""

As she turned toward the stairs, Joseph resisted the urge to look back. But in the end, he couldn't help but glance her way.

Her pink pajamas and hair cascading over her shoulders left a lingering scent of cedar in the air, a lasting imprint of her presence.

Joseph clenched his fists tighter, hoping to lessen the suffocating feeling in his chest.

He thought it would take some persuading for her to sign those papers, yet she did it so swiftly, as if she couldn't wait to run back to David.

He smirked bitterly. He’d faced greater challenges; losing a woman wouldn't be the end of him.

Half an hour later, when Cassie descended the stairs with her luggage, the living room was empty. The breakfast she'd made cluttered the trash can.

She forced a smile, wiped away a tear, and left.

The mansion grew smaller in the rearview mirror as she whispered, ""Goodbye, Joseph.""

She had thought this was her only home, that Joseph was her only kin.

Now, she was alone again.

---

Less than twenty minutes after her departure, Noah’s car pulled up to the villa.

He rushed upstairs while Joseph stood on the balcony, his gaze fixed towards the road. A cigarette dangled from his lips, and the ashtray beside him was brimming with butts.

""Joseph, are you really heading back to New York?"" Noah said with a heartfelt tone. ""Man, I’m gonna miss you. It won’t be the same without you.""

""You're not gonna miss me. You're just gonna miss the cash I rake in for your firm,"" Joe muttered dismissively, flicking ash from his cigarette.

Noah cleared his throat awkwardly. ""C'mon, Joe. Just because of your presence here, the firm's income has skyrocketed by over a billion this year.""

Joe pocketed his hands, his dark eyes cold and piercing.

Noah let out a sigh. ""Fine, I should've never invited you to Madison in the first place. When are you leaving?""

""Tomorrow. Sell the mansion,"" Joe said flatly before turning to walk into the house.

Having nowhere else to go, Cassie made her way directly to Laura's apartment complex.

She rang the doorbell incessantly, and after a few minutes, a disheveled, booze-smelling Laura Miller stumbled to open the door.

""What are you doing here with your luggage?"" Laura blinked at the two suitcases by Cassie's feet, startled.

""I'm divorced, got kicked out, and I haven't found a new place yet. So I'm staying here,"" Cassie declared, hauling her luggage in and sinking onto the sofa, deflated like a discarded marionette.

""What?"" Laura’s temper flared. ""Is this about that photo? He's your boyfriend. Why wouldn't he trust you? I'm gonna give him a piece of my mind. This is outrageous.""
