Chapter 517

Within the confines of the mansion, Cassie felt akin to a bird trapped in a gilded cage. Her world was limited to the boundaries of the estate, with no freedom to venture beyond. A week had passed since her last encounter with Joseph, and she couldn't help but wonder if he had forgotten about her pregnancy.

Her mood, heavy with a growing sense of despair, began to affect her appetite, causing concern for Grandma and Walter. "Summon Joseph," Grandma commanded the butler during dinner. "Regardless of his commitments, he cannot neglect his wife and unborn child. Just because they sleep in separate rooms does not absolve him of his responsibilities."

Upon the butler's return, he bore a grim expression. "Joseph claims he is working overtime," he reported.

Walter's patience snapped. "Even if Joseph is occupied, he needs to rest. This is excessive," he declared, slamming his hand onto the table.

"Perhaps he is genuinely busy," Grandma interjected, casting a warning glance at Walter, mindful of Cassie's presence.

Frustration gnawed at Walter. Joseph had been the one to insist on marrying Cassie, yet he left her isolated and neglected. Had his affections waned? Walter found himself feeling a strange sense of sympathy for Cassie, her pale face tugging at his heartstrings.

"Grandpa, Grandma, please don't trouble yourselves further. I had a disagreement with him, so he probably doesn't wish to see me," Cassie interjected, her voice steady. "I'm confined to this mansion every day. I wish to venture out tomorrow to visit my friends. May I?"

Grandma hesitated before acquiescing. "Very well. But exercise caution and have Rosalind accompany you."

The following day, as Cassie prepared to leave, Joe intercepted her. "I'm sorry, Rosalind, but Joseph has forbidden you from leaving the house."

"Is he attempting to imprison me?" Cassie questioned, her heart heavy with disappointment. How could he be so heartless?

Joe sighed, "I understand you intended to attend Nina's trial today, but Joseph will be furious..."

"Am I not even permitted to bid farewell to my friend?" Cassie countered, advancing towards Joe. "Tell him, if I am not allowed to leave today, I don't want this baby..." Her words hung in the air as she produced a fruit knife from her pocket.

" Cassie, please, calm down," Joe pleaded, startled.

"I cannot remain calm. I'm carrying his child, yet I live like a prisoner. Why does Joseph have the right to confine me? I'm a human being. If he expects me to endure this for the rest of my life, I'd rather not bear his child." Cassie's eyes welled up with tears, her hands trembling.

Fearful that Cassie might harm herself, Joe hastily retreated, reluctantly conceding. "Alright, you may leave. I'll inform Joseph later."

Cassie departed without delay. She was already late, and if she delayed any further, she might miss the trial.

Meanwhile, in the presidential suite of a five-star hotel, Megan sat on the sofa, engrossed in her case files. Joseph, in a rare show of domesticity, poured her a cup of coffee.

She took a sip and smiled. "You remembered my preference for Americano, without sugar."

"Few women appreciate such a bitter brew," Joseph remarked, taking a seat opposite her. His mind, however, was elsewhere, recalling Cassie's fondness for sweet coffee laden with sugar and cream.

Megan noticed the distant look in Joseph's eyes, a stark contrast to his usual focused demeanor. She realized, with a pang of jealousy, that his thoughts were occupied by another woman.
