Chapter 245
"A tense silence enveloped the room, stretching out for a full thirty seconds before Charles finally broke it. ""We respect your decisions, Cassie,"" he said, his voice echoing in the stillness.
In a swift and precise move, Peace Group's Instagram account released a fresh update.
The update read, ""The photo in question originates from an incident over a month ago when Cassie was unjustly framed and nearly fell victim to a plot. Thankfully, Mr. Foster from Wit Group intervened to rescue her. We are pleased to confirm that their relationship extends no further than friendship and they both continue to maintain it as such. We kindly request the public to move on and let this issue rest.""
Not long after, David stepped into the fray, resharing Peace Group's Instagram post.
""At the time of the incident, Cassie was under the influence of some substance. However, she quickly regained her senses and chose to sober up with a cold shower. She is a remarkably resilient woman, and we hope that she will not be misjudged or maligned due to a few misleading photographs.""
The Instagram post had an unexpectedly positive turnaround.
People began showering praise on David for his compassion and on Cassie for her courage. They even started pairing the duo romantically, encouraging them to stop avoiding the inevitable and become a couple, declaring them a power couple in the business world.
Meanwhile, at the law firm, the office atmosphere was thick with tension, as if a storm was brewing.
Joseph had been engrossed in his phone all day. In the morning, everyone was criticizing Cassie, but by the afternoon, public sentiment had completely shifted, with people cheering for her and David to become a couple.
Infuriated, Joseph smashed his phone, exclaiming, ""What's wrong with people, having nothing better to do? How are those two even a match? Are they blind?""
Walter, standing nearby, sighed at the sight of the destroyed phone. It was another one to replace — he wondered how many had been destroyed since they moved to Madison.
""Mr. Hernandez, people online do have too much time on their hands. Don't stoop to their level,"" he advised.
Joseph squinted, not in the mood to ignore the situation, especially after reading comments about David's supposed affection for Cassie, her alleged reciprocation, and the fabricated love stories some had concocted about them pining for each other.
Fuming, he decided to take action. He sat down and began typing furiously on his laptop’s keyboard.
A few minutes later, Walter noticed the trending searches implode.
Impressive. Mr. Hernandez had actually managed to hack the server.
Just then, the office door swung open, and Noah Collins stepped in, visibly taken aback by Joseph's formidable expression. ""I did some digging. That night, Olivia indeed had a few people show up at the club. She even ensured the manager kept her private room reserved and off-limits to others.""
Joseph narrowed his eyes, piecing together that Cassie had indeed been manipulated.
But the image of her passionate kiss with David still infuriated him.
""Did you find out when Cassie and David left?""
""It was morning,"" Noah Collins cleared his throat and said softly, ""and she changed clothes before stepping out.""
No sooner had the words left his mouth than Joseph smashed his computer as well.
Being alone with a woman in a private room, with her having taken medication, how could he possibly believe that she didn't sleep with David.
Noah shot him a sympathetic look. Truth be told, under those circumstances, even he had his doubts about Cassie's innocence.
""Look... Cassie's a victim too... I heard Olivia brought two bodyguards with her; things could have been much worse if David hadn't shown up.""
""What are you saying? Am I supposed to thank David?""
Joseph shot him a cold glare, ""At the end of the day, she's the fool, falling for the Brooks family's tricks time and again. Then afterwards trying to deceive me, befriending David as if I'm some fool.""
Noah scratched his nose, ""Anyway, I've done all the digging for you. Whether you break up with her or not, that's for you to decide.""
With nowhere to channel his frustration, Joseph lit up a cigarette, ""Join me for a drink tonight.""
