Chapter 925 Hearing About David's Marriage
"You must be joking," Michael said, feeling a bit uneasy at her words.
"I'm telling the truth," Laura replied, turning around to hail a taxi.
"You don't want me to give you a ride?" Michael blurted out.
"No, I wouldn't dare. You're too noble; I'm afraid you'd throw me out of the car," Laura said as she got into the taxi without any hesitation.
Michael stood there stunned for a while. This wasn't how he had imagined it would go.
He had thought Laura would cling to him desperately, especially since ten percent of the Jude Group's shares were quite tempting.
At this moment, he suddenly remembered that he forgot to remind her to take the birth control pills.
Fifty minutes later, Laura got out of the taxi, only to find Michael waiting at the entrance of her apartment complex.
"What do you want now?" Laura's mood turned sour at the sight of him.
"Here, take this," Michael handed her a box of birth control pills, his eyes flickering. "I can't let you have my child."
Laura felt a chill in her heart. She thought, 'Really, how could I be so unlucky in this life? First Benjamin, and now Michael.'
"Don't worry; I took the pills right after leaving the hotel yesterday. It's too late for your box now," Laura said, suppressing her anger as she walked closer.
"Michael, don't go too far. I was framed at your press conference; I'm a victim, too. Remember, if it weren't for joining the Ocean Blue group, I wouldn't have lost my virginity to you. You may not like me, but at least have some conscience," she then continued.
Michael was forced to take a step back by the anger in her eyes, feeling a bit guilty.
"I was doing it for you. I don't like you, and if you had my child, you'd be a single mother. Don't think you can use a child to ingratiate yourself with my family," Michael stated.
"Rest assured; I don't want to pass on your inferior genes either. But I was framed at your press conference; don't you owe me an explanation? Who set me up?" Laura demanded aggressively.
Michael was stunned by her question. He knew it was Nathan.
But Nathan was Megan's brother, and Megan had already sacrificed so much for him. If he revealed the truth, Nathan might be arrested.
"How would I know? You were dressed like that; maybe you attracted some perverted man," Michael said, looking away, unable to meet her eyes.
But his evasive look didn't escape Laura's notice.
It seemed Cassie was right; it was indeed Nathan that night. Michael knew but was covering it up for Megan.
A deep sense of disappointment flashed in Laura's eyes.
Although Laura didn't like Michael, she respected him. She just thought he was foolish for falling for Megan.
But now it seemed Michael couldn't distinguish right from wrong, and there was nothing left in him for her to admire.
Laura no longer looked at Michael and turned to leave.
"You're just... just going to leave like that?" Michael called out instinctively.
"What else? Will you tell me it was Nathan? Will you help me catch him? You'd even help Nathan cover up the evidence," Laura let out a cold laugh and snapped. "Michael, don't take people for fools. Only Nathan would dare to do such a thing. Three years ago, he broke into my house, beat me, and assaulted me."
"Three years later, with you all protecting him, what wouldn't he dare to do? He's really lucky, losing one Mr. Hernandez and gaining another Mr. Jude," she said, lowering her eyelashes to hide the hatred in her eyes, and left without looking back.
Michael watched her retreating figure, his handsome face burning with embarrassment. He hadn't expected her to know everything.
It was Nathan who had framed her, and then he had ruined her reputation. In hindsight, his words were really over the top.
From beginning to end, she hadn't done anything wrong. He should compensate her somehow.
Night fell, and a business banquet was underway.
Joseph stood on the open-air balcony, holding a wine glass.
His deep, melancholic gaze pierced through the sheer curtains, observing the glamorous party inside.
If the host of the banquet hadn't been a long-time collaborator, he wouldn't have come. He had no interest in such occasions.
If he hadn't done with Cassie, she could have accompanied him to the banquet. With her, the event wouldn't have been so dull.
Perhaps it was the alcohol that filled Joseph's mind with a violent longing. He missed Cassie and wanted to pull her into his arms and kiss her fiercely.
Suddenly, a man and a woman walked past the sheer curtains. "Why did you ask me for Ava's contact information just now?"
"Isn't it for David from Kimbere?" the man explained. "He saw the dress you wore at our wedding and thought it was beautiful, so he asked for Ava's number."
"Why would he need Ava's contact? Is it for his girlfriend? I haven't heard he has a girlfriend. Did you tell him Ava specializes in wedding dresses?" that woman asked.
"I did. I asked if he was getting married, but he didn't answer. He did say his family introduced him to someone local in Madison, and he's quite satisfied," he then added.
"Then he might really be getting married. You'll have to attend the wedding, right?" she remarked.
"He said it wouldn't be a grand affair, and if there is a wedding, it will be in Madison. But he appreciated my offer," he replied.
David!
Joseph's eyes darkened.
If it hadn't been mentioned, he would have almost forgotten that name.
Three years ago, David had relentlessly pursued Cassie. Now he was getting married.
Well, it had been three years. David couldn't wait for Cassie forever, and he wasn't getting any younger. It made sense that he got married.
But Joseph felt an inexplicable unease.
He took a sip of his drink in frustration. The woman marrying David wasn't Cassie, so he shouldn't be overthinking it.
At nine o'clock, as he was about to leave the banquet early, he saw David walking towards him from the restroom corridor.
David seemed to be in a great mood, with a warm smile on his face. His elegant black suit and vest made him look dashing.
Joseph frowned, finding him instinctively annoying.
"Mr. Hernandez!" David nodded politely in greeting.
"Hello," Joseph replied, striding away. His arrogant attitude left David with a mocking smile.
David thought, 'Joseph, let's see how long you can stay smug! Soon, you'll fall from your pedestal, and even your woman will marry me. Too bad you don't know anything yet. '
After leaving the banquet, Joseph had the driver take him to the Chapman family villa.
He dismissed the driver and leaned against the car, quietly watching the windows of the Chapman family home.
