Chapter 1650 Danger Approaches

Cassie analyzed, "The current issue is what Michael is thinking. Will he let you walk away unscathed? Have you considered that everyone criticized and even boycotted him before because he was the one who first betrayed the marriage? So, if he takes this opportunity to pin the blame for infidelity on you, wouldn't that clear his name?"

"He can't be that bad, can he?" Laura was startled. If Michael did that, it would be a completely different matter; it would be ruthless and malicious.

"Who knows? Human nature is the most unpredictable. Before yesterday, could you have known that Michael would lose control and call you a slut after seeing you with Derek, completely forgetting that he had betrayed you?"

Cassie understood Laura's thoughts. Michael was indeed detestable, but ultimately, it stemmed from his blind love for Megan. So, the detestable person must have some pitiful aspects.

But when a person loses everything, falling from the high pedestal like Michael, and even his ex-wife, who he desperately wanted to reconcile with, being with his cousin, would he regret not cherishing what he had? Or would he turn to extreme hatred?

Cassie wasn't sure anymore.

At least from yesterday's reaction, Michael didn't seem to feel any regret.

He was blaming others, as if he had become the victim.

"After Joseph's incident, I studied psychology." Cassie said, "Some people subconsciously shirk responsibility. Over time, it becomes a habitual behavior. Take Michael, for example. He got you pregnant and instinctively blamed you for seducing him and wanting to marry into a wealthy family. He doesn't think there's anything wrong with himself. He spends nights out with other women and blames you for not trusting him. He doesn't think he, as a married man, should maintain a distance from other women. Later, when you divorced, he didn't think he was at fault; instead, he blamed you for being malicious. He thought you deserved to be abandoned."

Laura's eyes widened, "Indeed. It seems like it's always been that way."

"That's why I asked Landon to act, to arrange a scene that Michael would witness and couldn't find an excuse for."

Cassie sat down in her office chair, took out a blank sheet of paper, and analyzed with her, "No man wants to admit he was cheated on during the marriage. He would rather find all sorts of reasons for Megan. Just like when Megan abandoned him, why did Michael still believe in her again? Because Michael himself didn't want to admit his failure. Megan's excuses gave him a perfect reason. He believed it and thought he was still charming and loved."

Laura bit her lip, falling into a complex confusion, "It's very profound. So, you mean he's very good at shirking responsibility and avoiding problems?"

"Yes." Cassie nodded, "After Megan went to prison, did he come to you, feeling regretful and remorseful? But what was he regretting? That Megan deceived him, that he was stupid and didn't see Megan's true nature?"

"Yes, that's it." Laura nodded vigorously.

"It's simple. He blamed Megan. He put all the blame for your broken marriage on Megan. He didn't realize he had significant issues himself. Why didn't Megan deceive Lucas or someone else, but only him?"

Cassie laughed coldly, "Now, he might have found another suitable reason for himself. Maybe it wasn't that he was stupid, but that you women were too malicious, that Derek was too insidious, that you always wanted to divorce Michael. Even without Megan, you wouldn't have stayed with Michael."

Laura was completely horrified.

Fuck.

"You don't need to be too surprised." Cassie raised an eyebrow, "Aren't you curious why, with the same parents, Aaron and Julia aren't like Michael? Why did Michael turn out this way?"

"Please enlighten me," Laura said with admiration.

"It's simple. Michael was with Megan for over ten years. Later, they got married and lived together. He was constantly influenced by her. A woman like Megan always seemed like the most innocent victim. Michael was definitely influenced."

Cassie reminded her, "Remember when Megan abused animals? How cruel was that? Later, it got to Michael. He also thought it was cruel but still suppressed it and let it go. What does that show? It shows that his moral standards were being lowered time and again."

Laura was shocked.

She hadn't thought deeply about it before. Now, with Cassie's reminder, she realized she might never have truly understood Michael.

If possible, she hoped Michael wouldn't be so despicable.

Because he was Maeve's father, and that was an undeniable fact.

In the morning, Laura sat in her office, not going to the lab.

Near noon, Caroline called, "Laura, want to have lunch together?"

"I just had breakfast with Godmother this morning." Laura didn't want to make any extra small talk and directly said, "Are you here to persuade me to break up with Derek?"

"Yes," Caroline said helplessly. "Laura, we're all happy that you're dating and starting a new life, but it shouldn't be with Derek. Trust me, breaking up is best for everyone."

Laura felt an indescribable annoyance. It was one thing for Violet to come to her, but why did Caroline have to as well? "If I don't agree, will Eric and the others call me next?"

"Eric was so angry he didn't sleep all night. This is ridiculous, and Michael can't understand it either. I'm genuinely looking out for you," Caroline persuaded. She couldn't control Michael.

"My dating life is my own business. Since I divorced Michael, we don't have much to do with each other. If anyone should be persuading me, it should be Derek's parents, not you. I'm very busy. Goodbye."

Laura hung up the phone unceremoniously.

At that moment, she felt a sense of defiance.

Her dating life had nothing to do with Michael.

Did she need Michael's approval for whoever she dated?

Why?

The more Laura thought about it, the angrier she got.

Laura didn't even go to work in the afternoon and drove home early.

As she was approaching the entrance to her neighborhood, a black sedan suddenly rushed towards her from the other side.

Laura was so scared that she slammed on the brakes, narrowly avoiding a collision.

She angrily got out of the car, "How are you driving?"
