Chapter 1772 I really despise you
Lucas tossed the phone to Joseph with a blank look. "When are they coming back?"
Joseph sighed, "Aren't you done with Bernice? Can you stop messing with her? It's tough for me being stuck in the middle. There are plenty of beautiful women in your company."
Lucas smirked. Sure, there were lots of beautiful women, but only Bernice had ever put him in the hospital.
Joseph shook his head. "I used to think you were just indifferent, but now you're downright cold. You should find a girlfriend and settle down. Look at my life now, how happy I am."
"That's because you got lucky with Cassie," Lucas replied flatly.
"Cassie is amazing, but I had to recognize that. We all get old someday. No matter how fun it is when you're young, how many people truly care about you?"
Joseph continued, "I know that even when I'm old, Cassie will stay with me, and we'll grow old together. But what about you? Men age too. When you're wrinkled and trying to find a twenty-year-old girl, who knows how much she'll despise you deep down."
Lucas was taken aback, thinking about the day he might be despised, and then frowned.
"There are actually many good women in this world. You just look down on others too much. It's unnecessary. Look at Cassie and Laura; they both grew up in small towns. Even at social gatherings, I often see many decent young women bravely refusing to drink. These are all commendable qualities in girls."
Lucas gave Joseph a long look. "Cassie has changed you a lot."
Joseph laughed. "I have obedient kids and a beautiful wife. You don't understand how fulfilling and happy my life is now."
Lucas was silent. He really didn't understand. A beautiful wife? Kids? What did that feel like? It was all too far away from him.
The plane landed at Whisperlyn City Airport.
Bernice turned on her phone and saw a Facebook message from Milan: [Are you back? Want to have dinner tonight?]
She thought about the gift in her suitcase for Milan and hesitated.
"Mr. Runyon is asking you out," Cassie teased, glancing over. "Are you going? You don't have much to do lately; you might as well find a boyfriend."
"I don't really want a boyfriend," Bernice said, feeling conflicted. The emotional trauma from her past life was too deep, filling her with resistance and rejection.
Besides, the body she was using was Bernice's. What right did she have to be happy? Even if she got her revenge, her heart was already scarred. She didn't want to fall in love at all.
Sophia bounced over to Bernice. "Bernice, don't you want a cute little baby like me?"
Bernice looked down at Sophia's adorable face. "I really like you, but I've never thought about becoming a mother."
Cassie was surprised. "Bernice, not all men are like Gary and Lucas."
"Of course, I know that," Bernice said sadly. "I just feel like I don't know how to love someone anymore."
Love was an instinct, and she seemed to have lost it.
Cassie was shocked and didn't know what to say. Even though she had been deeply hurt by Joseph, she wasn't like Bernice.
After the four of them left the airport, Joseph personally came to pick up Cassie, Sophia, and Oliver.Joseph also gave Bernice a ride back to her villa.
After watching the car leave, Bernice turned to get into her own car when suddenly a few tall men surrounded her.
"Ms. Ramsey, Mr. Nelson would like to see you," said one of the burly men, who was easily six feet tall.
"What if I refuse?" Bernice asked calmly.
"Then we'll have to take you by force," the man warned.
"Fine," Bernice nodded.
The burly man gave her a strange look. It was rare for a woman to be so calm in such a situation.
They escorted Bernice all the way to Snowford Evergreen's villa.
Lucas had been recuperating in his own villa since he was discharged from the hospital.
Bernice had been to Snowford Evergreen many times, but she mainly went to the Hernandez House. This was her first time at Lucas's place.
The house wasn't as big as the Hernandez House, but it was still over twenty thousand square feet.
When Bernice entered, Lucas was lying on a lounge chair in loose white loungewear, with one injured foot propped up on a nearby stool, wrapped in bandages.
The twilight glow fell on his handsome face, casting shadows under his thick eyelashes.
"You seemed to have had a good time abroad. Finally, we managed to get you here," Lucas said, his deep eyes scrutinizing her. "Look at you, doing well lately. You've gained some weight, and your complexion is rosy and healthy."
"Thank you for the compliment, Mr. Nelson," Bernice replied in a calm voice.
Her attitude completely infuriated Lucas. "Bernice, do you think I'm complimenting you? You put me in the hospital, and you went on a vacation abroad. Do you not take me seriously, or do you think I won't dare to deal with you?"
"What kind of dealing are you talking about?" Bernice suddenly asked.
Lucas met her gaze and was momentarily stunned, then laughed angrily. "If you think I'll sleep with you, you're dreaming."
"That's good," Bernice nodded. "I find you quite repulsive too."
"What did you say?" Lucas looked at her in shock.
The bodyguards were also stunned.
It was the first time they had seen a woman dare to confront Lucas head-on.
"Was I not clear enough?" Bernice's eyes showed a hint of disdain. "Just because you're injured, does that mean I can't be healthy and rosy? Do you think you control Madison? If you're so capable, why don't you become the president?"
"Bernice," Lucas's eyes were sinister as he gripped the armrest of the lounge chair.
"You're being disrespectful," the burly bodyguard shouted. "Apologize to Mr. Nelson immediately, or don't blame us for being rude."
"Mr. Nelson, I have dinner plans with Milan. If I disappear or leave your villa injured, you'll be in trouble too," Bernice raised an eyebrow, her delicate face showing no fear.
Lucas stared at her. "Wow, in just a few days, you've hooked up with Milan. No wonder you're so arrogant. But do you think Milan can do anything to me? Or do you think you have the power to influence him? Stop dreaming."
"Try it and see, Mr. Nelson. My social connections aren't as bad as you think."
Bernice walked up to him, meeting his contemptuous eyes. "Why don't you have this guy break my leg and see what happens?"
