Chapter 275
"Cassie wasn't particularly interested in Chapman Enterprises, but she agreed to go out of politeness. They didn’t return from the company until five in the afternoon.
The Chapman mansion was already lit up brilliantly, its garden adorned with expensive plants and flowers. The walkways were swept clean, reflecting the care taken to maintain the estate’s grandeur.
Upon entering, Vera was busy directing the staff to tidy up here and there. Luna had changed into a chic, luxurious tweed jacket from the season's most expensive collection, paired with a skirt and leggings, topped off with a soft wool shawl draped over her shoulders.
Luna's long hair was styled in a fashion that was unmistakably regal; the front in curls and the back woven into braids, presenting herself as nothing less than a little princess.
""Honey, I heard you took Cassie to the office today?"" Vera approached with an insinuating tone.
""Can't I show my own daughter around the company?"" Leo frowned.
""Of course not,"" Vera suppressed her irritation, offering a smile instead. ""Cassie, I bought you a lot of designer clothes today. I'm sure they're hard to come by in your hometown. Why don't you go try them on? Mr. Hernandez will be here soon, and we can’t have you looking underdressed.""
""Go on,"" Leo finally found his wife’s suggestion agreeable.
As Cassie went upstairs and opened the closet, she couldn't help but laugh at the sight. The so-called designer clothes were from several seasons ago, unsold because of their dated colors. Wearing them in the circles of New York high society would be laughable. But it didn’t bother her; she trusted her own charm.
Twenty minutes later, she descended the stairs, emanating a confidence that needed no embellishment.
Vera and her daughter were stumped for a second when Cassie descended the stairs. Instead of the expected frumpy outfit, Cassie looked unexpectedly chic. Wrapped in a long grey down jacket, too large and blanket-like for the average person to pull off, it hung on Cassie with an effortless grace.
The coat’s zipper hung undone, revealing a soft, cream-colored sweater paired with casual white pants. She donned no makeup, save for a swipe of tomato-red lipstick that gave her the refreshing appearance of a teenager—pure and stunningly pretty.
Next to her overly adorned friend Luna, who was decked out in her finest, Luna ended up looking rather tacky in comparison.
Cassie, ever the charmer, smiled and said gratefully, “Thanks for the jacket. It’s really warm. I love it.”
“As long as you like it,” Vera replied, fuming inside just as she noticed Leo shoot her a cold glare.
Leo wasn't much for fashion, but he could see the petty games his wife played. Fortunately for Cassie, with her stunning figure and good looks, she could make anything work.
Just then, a servant entered, announcing, “Joseph’s arrived.”
They all made their way outside as a Rolls-Royce smoothly pulled in. The driver stepped out and opened the rear door, revealing a man whose distinguished presence spoke volumes.
Dressed in a tailored grey overcoat and matching suit, his attire was a calculated accentuation of his attractiveness, but on him, it looked completely natural. With a stride reminiscent of a top-tier fashion model and a chiseled face free from any flaws, he was the epitome of elegance.
Cassie's mind buzzed when she recognized him. How could it be him? She knew Richard feared him and that his standing in the Hernandez family was significant, but she never guessed he was the enigmatic Joseph, wealthiest man in all of Madison.
Laura Miller had carelessly pointed her towards a veritable titan, and now she had unwittingly entangled herself with him. And if he was Luna's boyfriend, could he eventually become her brother-in-law?
