Chapter 913 The Proposal
"Get out," Athena warned.
Zachary glared but had no choice but to leave. After all, behind Dragon stood Joseph, whom he couldn't afford to provoke. He hadn't expected Megan to still be under Dragon's protection; he thought they had already withdrawn.
Once Zachary left, Athena immediately helped Megan up. "Miss Ray, are you alright? It's my fault for only finding a chance to sneak back to Madison these past few days. I didn't expect..."
"Athena, thank goodness for you. Otherwise, I would have jumped to my death today." Megan cried, hugging her. "Now everyone knows I have no one to rely on, and many have come to bully me."
Athena felt both heartbroken and furious. "Mr. Hernandez is truly heartless. You've known him for over a decade. It's okay for him to leave you. Why make a public statement about it?"
"Stop, Athena. If Joseph finds out you've returned, he might cripple you," Megan said, pushing her away in a panic. "If he can be so heartless to me, what about you?"
Athena shivered, recalling how Mr. Hernandez had once considered expelling her from Dragon.
"Athena, don't stay by my side anymore. If Joseph reconciles with Cassie, you must remember to curry favor with Cassie, understand?" Megan advised worriedly. "It's not worth it for me."
Athena almost burst into tears. People outside feared Dragon's members, but they didn't know she was just a bodyguard, a dog for the Hernandez family. Only Megan truly treated her as a friend and even now genuinely cared for her.
"Go quickly," Megan said, pushing her away with tears in her eyes.
After Athena left, Megan dialed a number. "She's gone."
In the parking lot, a distracted Athena was about to get into her car when a middle-aged man wearing sunglasses suddenly approached. "Athena, care to chat for a bit?"
"Who are you? Get lost." Athena glared at him.
The man in sunglasses grabbed her arm, a casual smirk on his lips. "I know you're a member of Dragon, but you don't want to be Joseph's dog for life, do you?"
Athena was startled.
In the mall upstairs, Megan ordered coffee and stirred it slowly. The music in the café suddenly changed to a sweet melody.
Soon after, a waiter pushed a three-tiered cake over, with "Marry Me" written in jam on top.
Megan was momentarily stunned. Then she saw Michael approaching with a large bouquet. He knelt on one knee before her. "Megan, please marry me. I've liked you for a long time, ever since we were in school. But back then, you had Joseph. Joseph can't give you happiness, but I can. Maybe I'm not as outstanding as Joseph, but I will give you all my love, forever and always."
"Michael..." Megan was taken aback but quickly got into character, her eyes welling up. "I... I really don't deserve your love."
"Don't say that. To me, you are the purest woman. I want to marry you. Give me a chance," Michael said, looking up at her with deep affection. "Don't refuse me."
"Alright." Megan finally nodded. Now that she and Joseph were impossible, she could only reluctantly marry Michael. Although Michael couldn't inherit the Jude Group, at least she wouldn't be ridiculed and mocked anymore.
"That's wonderful, Megan. Thank you," Michael said, carefully placing the wedding ring on her finger and pulling her into his embrace.
Someone nearby took videos and photos and posted them online. Soon, "Mr. Jude proposes to Megan" became a trending topic.
One user commented: [Wow, Megan is lucky! Just got dumped by Joseph, and now Mr. Jude proposes to her.]
Another added: [This shows Megan is a woman worth cherishing. Otherwise, she wouldn't have had Joseph's love before and Michael's deep affection for over a decade now. It's so touching.]
Someone else questioned: [Is Megan deliberately trying to get back at Mr. Hernandez? Otherwise, why would she agree to Mr. Jude so quickly?]
A fourth user joked: [Wonder if Mr. Hernandez regrets it now.]
At Riverside Blossom, Laura, who was lying on the sofa enjoying a meal Cassie had cooked for her, almost choked on her chips when she saw the news.
"Cassie, look quickly! That annoying Michael actually proposed to Megan." Laura hurried over to share the gossip. "It's like putting a pile of cow dung on a cake."
Cassie blinked. "In your eyes, Michael is already a cake?"
Laura blinked back. "I just think it's a pity. Apart from his venomous mouth, Michael can't be called a bad man. He's just too stupid, almost like Joseph. No, I think he's even worse than Joseph."
"I didn't expect the Jude family to release him so soon. I bet the Jude family is quite upset now." Cassie mused. "Michael's proposal is quite sensational; it's all over the trending topics."
"Definitely a bought trending topic," Laura scoffed. "A few days ago, Joseph publicly said he wouldn't reconcile with Megan. And now, just a few days later, she agrees to marry Michael. What a bitch."
"It's quite normal. Joseph refused to reconcile with her, so she had to cling tightly to Michael," Cassie said with a face full of mockery. "I just wonder what Joseph's expression will be."
"Probably a very frustrated expression. Joseph might have thought Megan would be devoted to him for life, but Megan is quite shrewd," Laura said.
In the office of the Hernandez Group, Joseph received the proposal photos sent by Michael. Looking at the image of Michael and Megan embracing, he didn't feel jealous or angry, but his brows furrowed tightly.
He was probably surprised that Megan agreed to Michael's proposal so quickly. Just a few days ago, Megan was crying and saying she loved him.
Could it be to get back at him?
Or maybe she realized she couldn't hold onto him and had to latch onto Michael. After all, among the young men in Whisperlyn City, Michael's family background and looks were among the top five.
He found that he couldn't quite understand Megan anymore.
Just then, Michael called. "Did you see? I proposed to Megan. You didn't cherish her, so from now on, I will cherish and protect her."
"Then congratulations." Joseph thought for a moment and offered his blessing. This way, Megan wouldn't keep bugging him, and Michael could get what he wanted.
"You're not even a bit angry?" Michael felt like he had punched a pillow, feeling a bit deflated.
"Why would I be? You've proposed, and I can't compete with you for her," Joseph said calmly. "I said I don't love her anymore, and I mean it. Let me know when the wedding is, and I'll attend."
With that, Joseph hung up.
Michael looked at the disconnected call, feeling strange, as if he were the one being abandoned, waiting for Joseph to regret it, but Joseph wasn't sad at all.
