Chapter 230
"Joseph spoke with an air of calm authority, his words soothing and assuring. ""I am aware of the situation. You've done well,"" he commended, his demeanor reflecting the natural leadership qualities he possessed.
Richard's heart fluttered with anticipation, but before he could formulate a response, Joseph's lips began to move again. ""But, she didn't grow suspicious, did she?"" The room suddenly filled with a chilling, commanding aura as he uttered these words, causing Richard's heart to freeze in terror.
Joseph's voice held a cool warning as he continued, ""Richard, do not attempt to deceive me. You remember what transpired when you tried that at 18, don't you?""
Richard shivered, the haunting memories from that dreadful year flooding his mind. ""She... she is suspicious,"" he admitted fearfully, no longer daring to conceal the truth. ""She deduced that you are from the Hernandez family, but I assure you, I didn't reveal it. She managed to trick the information out of me and I may have inadvertently given her some hints. After all... we both share the last name Hernandez...""
Joseph massaged his temples, frustration evident on his face. Richard's consistent incompetence was a thorn in his side, often jeopardizing their plans rather than securing them.
Stammering, Richard ventured, ""Joseph, your concern is that she'll become infatuated with you once she discovers your true identity, isn't it? It's understandable. We Hernandez men are like magnets to women. But honestly, she's not in your league. She's too lowly for anything beyond a brief dalliance.""
""Enough,"" Joseph retorted, his icy glare silencing Richard. ""Leave Madison, immediately.""
""Alright, I'm leaving,"" Richard hastily packed his belongings and scurried out of the room.
Alone in the room, Joseph rose from his seat and walked over to the floor-to-ceiling window, a frown marring his handsome features. Being naturally suspicious and having grown up under the influence of the prestigious Hernandez family, he was no stranger to women pursuing him for his status - a fact he deeply resented. This was precisely why he had kept his true identity hidden from Cassie; he wanted her to love him for who he was, not his surname.
However, now that she was aware of his lineage, he couldn't help but wonder what thoughts were running through her mind.
Walter's voice broke the silence, ""Mr. Hernandez, there is no need for concern. Miss Brooks fell for you the moment she laid eyes on you at the bar. It was love at first sight. She is attracted to you, irrespective of your status.""
""You're right,"" Joseph sighed in relief, realizing he had been overthinking the situation. Cassie had been fond of him for quite some time, certainly longer than just a few days.
At five in the afternoon, a sleek black sedan pulled up in front of the Peace Group building. Cassie soon climbed in, and the man behind the wheel removed his coat, revealing a crisp white shirt and a suit vest that accentuated his impressive physique. He looked as though he had stepped straight out of a comic book - strikingly handsome and extraordinarily charming. Despite seeing him daily, his appearance always took her breath away. He was the kind of man whose charm never faded.
That day, having discovered his true identity, Cassie was in turmoil. Yet, she couldn't bear the thought of letting go of this man who had been her rock during the most challenging and painful times in her life. He had once again come to her rescue.
She made up her mind that no matter what difficulties lay ahead, she would face them with him by her side.
""What's with the staring?"" Joseph teased, playfully pinching her nose.
Cassie glanced at the watch on his wrist, recalling past instances when she had mocked his choice of generic watches and clothes, considering it embarrassing. How short-sighted she had been, she realized; everything he wore was likely custom-made.
""You look wonderful, and I'm in high spirits,"" she chuckled. ""Did you see how humiliated Robert and Olivia were? Especially Olivia, who always pretends to be so virtuous at work, is now despised by the entire company.""
""Mhm,"" Joseph responded, listening to her chatter. Once she finished, he raised an eyebrow and asked, ""Is there anything else you want to say?""
