Chapter 1366 Michael Has His Merits
"You..." The socialite was fuming, and everyone could feel Michael's rage, making them all shiver and keep their mouths shut.
After a bit, a socialite in a pink dress piped up, "Michael, we didn't mean any harm, we were just chatting. You know, we used to hang out a lot. Please, cut us some slack."
"No chance. You disrespected me by talking smack about my wife." Michael shot back, "And let's be real, we didn't hang out that much. We bumped into each other at a few parties, had some small talk, played a few games, and that was ages ago."
"Michael, don't push it," the socialite said, her face turning red with embarrassment.
"So what? Who do you think you are? If you think I'm being too harsh, then don't bother showing up at any of the Jude family's events from now on."
With that, Michael stormed off.
The socialites were left in shock.
The Jude family's events were the hottest tickets in Madison, something every rich and noble family would die to attend. Who would've thought that a few snide comments about Laura would get them blacklisted?
They were kicking themselves, wondering, 'Isn't Michael supposed to be indifferent to Laura? Why's he defending her so fiercely? It's mind-boggling.'
They watched as Michael made his way towards where Laura was standing.
Laura instinctively ducked into a nearby lounge, and Michael didn't notice, heading straight for the booth where she had been. Laura leaned against the wall, holding Maeve close. Her heart was racing. She thought, 'I never expected Michael to stand up for me, let alone chew out those socialites. Didn't he say I had a thick waist? How does he suddenly know to respect pregnant women and mothers? Has he had a change of heart? Or has he always been like this? Maybe I never really understood Michael. He's not that bad. Even though he said some harsh things, maybe, like Rose said, it was because I was harsh too that Michael pushed back. Michael and I were both so hostile before, we never really saw each other for who we are.
Michael has his good points. During my pregnancy, after we started living together, Michael made sure I had nutritious meals every day.
I've been spoiled since I was a kid, lazy, forgetful, and messy. When Benjamin visited, he always complained about how lazy and messy I was, and he always praised how clean and tidy Isla was, telling me to learn from her.
Back then, I snapped back, "I'm lazy, but I can hire a maid. You make so much money, and you wouldn't even hire a maid after we get married?" Benjamin just said, "I'll hire a maid, but you can't be too lazy as a woman."
But after moving in with Michael, he only mentioned it once, and then never again. He just had the maid clean the villa thoroughly, never making me do any dirty or tiring work. Even the fruit I ate was washed and handed to me. Maybe I missed a lot of details. This is probably why Rose suddenly said that I was also at fault when Michael and I argued.
If, on the day of the delivery, when Michael doubted me, I had just calmly explained that I was dining with a female friend instead of mocking him, we wouldn't have blown up like that.‘
Thinking it over, Laura realized she had her own share of issues.
Just then, her phone buzzed. It was Michael.
Her heart skipped a beat, and she quickly picked up.
"Where'd you go with Maeve? You're not in the booth, and I can't find you in the banquet hall."
"I got lost, I'm heading back now," Laura said, feeling a mix of emotions.
Michael almost blurted out, "You idiot," but he bit his tongue. If he wanted to avoid a divorce, he had to keep it together.
"What do you want to say?" Laura asked. Normally, she'd be pissed, but after seeing him stand up for her earlier, she couldn't get mad. "You wanna call me an idiot?"
"No," Michael struggled to say. "Getting lost is normal. I almost got lost myself. Want me to come get you?"
"No need."
After hanging up, Laura couldn't help but laugh.
When did he get lost? He knew this place like the back of his hand.
Whatever, if he was trying to keep his cool, why should she be the one to snap?
Getting all worked up wasn't fun anyway.
When she got back to the dining room, Michael was bracing for her anger, but to his surprise, Laura just asked, "Have you finished eating?"
"Yeah."
Michael felt a bit uneasy. Didn't Laura realize he almost called her an idiot?
"If you're done, then hold Maeve," Laura said, handing Maeve over.
Michael took the baby, looking stunned.
When Laura sat down, she noticed everyone had finished eating. In front of her were two plates, loaded with her favorite dishes.
"Mom, did you save these for me? Thanks, you're the best," Laura said, smiling sweetly at Rose.
Rose looked puzzled, and Caroline smirked, "Michael saved them for you."
Laura was taken aback, feeling a bit stiff.
She probably didn't expect Michael to know her tastes so well.
"You can thank Michael," Rose grinned.
Everyone gave her knowing looks, and Laura felt so embarrassed she wanted to hide under the table.
Michael saw her blushed face, his lips curling slightly. He wanted to tease her but held back.
"Eat up, it won't taste good if it gets cold," Michael reminded her, echoing what Lucas had told him earlier. For someone like Michael, actions spoke louder than words.
"Good, you've changed since becoming a dad," Eric nodded approvingly. "You even know how to care for others now."
"Uh-huh," Laura almost choked.
She ate her meal, too shy to look up.
After eating, Laura and the elders of the Jude family took the elevator downstairs.
As soon as they stepped out, they saw the socialites from before, along with their parents, waiting for them.
Laura guessed the socialites were probably dragged by their parents to apologize. No one could afford to piss off the Jude family now.
