Chapter 1415 Michael Really Went to Great Lengths
In the last hour, Cassie had already hit up Joel from Dragon. Joel was quick with the deets, "That apartment you mentioned? Built three years ago by Luxe Living Realty. Luxe Living Realty's got three shareholders: Alaric Kingsley, Cillian Lockwood, and Jonah."
"Jonah?" Laura frowned, "That name rings a bell. Oh right, Michael mentioned a friend named Jonah when he went out for a birthday dinner recently."
After saying that, Laura's heart sank even more, "Could Michael be using his buddy's apartment to hide Megan?"
Cassie didn't answer her but instead asked Joel, "When we were digging into Megan earlier, did we check this area?"
Joel hesitated, "This is a high-end spot, and a lot of the owners are Whisperlyn City aristocrats who use these places for investment. When we checked, the property management said there were complaints from residents. Later, folks from ShadowNet Intelligence Agency came over and said they knew the area, so we handed it over to them. ShadowNet said there was no sign of Megan."
Joel paused and then added, "Besides, we didn't think Megan would be living here since it requires ID registration. So, we focused on older buildings."
Cassie got it.
When Cassie had asked Joseph earlier about the current head of ShadowNet Intelligence Agency being Michael, she had her doubts.
Now, those doubts seemed more and more legit.
"Joel, get some people to stake out near the apartment. Don't tell Joseph for now, and make sure ShadowNet doesn't catch wind of it. Also, check which apartments under Jonah's name are available."
After Cassie hung up, Laura's face went even paler, "Is Megan really in there?"
"There's a fifty-fifty chance," Cassie nodded. "Your tracking yesterday only got Michael to this building, not the exact unit. We need to dig deeper."
Laura nodded, still feeling lost and confused.
Laura couldn't wrap her head around why Michael would hide Megan. Did he love Megan that much?
When they got to the apartment building, Joel had already found out where Jonah's apartments were. Turns out, the entire 19th and 20th floors belonged to Jonah.
Luckily, Dragon had hackers who quickly got into the property management system and found the occupancy info for those two floors.
"Mrs. Brooks, the hacker found the water and electricity usage and rental info for Jonah's apartments. We checked, and some apartments were rented out as early as three years ago, the latest being two months ago. Only three apartments under Jonah's name were vacant a month ago, but one apartment, unit 1908, shows no rental records yet has daily water and electricity usage."
"When did this start?"
"About two weeks ago."
"Got it." Cassie nodded.
Cassie's phone was on speaker, and Laura fell into deep thought after hearing all this.
A moment later, Laura pulled out her phone and checked, "It was two days before Michael went on a business trip to Emerald Lakeside. He lied to me when he came back from Emerald Lakeside, and I didn't know where he was that afternoon and evening. He even changed clothes when he got back."
Now Laura probably guessed it too—Michael had come here.
Cassie's eyes flashed with anger and frustration.
What did Michael take Laura for?
"Are we just going up like this?" Laura asked, surprisingly calm despite everything she had figured out.
"Michael's people might be lurking around the apartment. If we tip them off, will Michael arrange for Megan to leave?" Laura continued.
"I'll have Joel block all the exits in the building. We'll sneak in," Cassie decided after a moment of thought. "But first, let's find a place to change clothes."
Half an hour later, Laura and Cassie had swapped their outfits for black sportswear and sneakers. They also wore baseball caps with wigs underneath, looking like two eighteen-year-old students—though more like two handsome boys than girls.
They followed a middle-aged couple into the apartment building.
Once inside, Cassie handed a stack of cash to the woman, "Thank you. This is your reward."
"No need. I can't stand men who cheat on their wives," the middle-aged woman said angrily. "You must catch that cheater."
"Alright, if I catch the cheater, I'll divorce my husband," Laura said, her eyes red.
That was the truth, but the middle-aged woman felt very sympathetic, "You're so beautiful, and your husband still betrayed you? He must be an idiot."
The middle-aged man added, "We really don't need the money. It used to be easy to get in here, but recently, the property management said there have been burglaries, so they're checking outsiders more strictly."
"Recently?" Cassie was taken aback.
"About two weeks ago."
After saying goodbye to the couple, Laura angrily said, "Michael has gone to great lengths to protect Megan. It's a good thing we disguised ourselves; otherwise, Michael's people might really be watching."
"Whether or not they're watching, Megan won't escape tonight," Cassie said, determined.
They didn't take the elevator directly to the 19th floor but instead got off at the 15th floor and quietly walked up.
As they reached the 18th floor, they heard a phone ringing upstairs, as if someone was playing a game.
Then, voices followed.
"How long do we have to stay here? I'm tired of taking shifts every day."
"No choice; it's orders from above."
"But I saw Michael here last night. He stayed until late. Who's the woman hiding inside?"
"Are you crazy? Keep your voice down. You can't just talk about this stuff. Be careful not to get overheard."
The voices upstairs became quieter, but Cassie and Laura still caught some of it.
"I'm just curious. I heard Michael and his wife are preparing for their wedding. This isn't right."
"Please shut up. This is how the rich live. How many of them stick to just one wife? Some just hide it better. You have to get that working for a powerful family like the Judes is an honor."
"But Michael's wife is the President's Goddaughter, right?"
"Is a Goddaughter the same as a biological daughter? And why was she made the Goddaughter? Everyone knows it's because of Michael. When Michael was kicked out of the Jude Family, they seemed indifferent, but they just wanted to teach him a lesson. After Michael apologized and returned, the big new energy project was handed over to Michael and Aaron."
