Chapter 214
""I don't care, you're going to sit there. If you don't, I'll be mad and give you the cold shoulder,"" Cassie pouted, her lips jutting out stubbornly.
Joseph was at a loss for words at her unreasonable demeanor.
He begrudgingly made his way to the table and sat down.
Ten minutes later, Cassie arrived with a family bucket meal complete with fries, a spicy chicken sandwich, and ice cream.
""Try this sandwich; it's really good,"" she encouraged enthusiastically.
""I have something to show you,"" Joseph pulled out his phone and handed it to her, displaying a recent KFC scandal.
At a glance, Cassie saw the image of a chicken with several wings and a myriad of legs. She turned queasy, ""Joseph, can you not be such a buzzkill?""
""Stuff like this is loaded with harmful substances. Let it go for today, but no more eating at places like this in the future. You're not a child,"" Joseph insisted firmly.
Cassie ignored him, diving into her chicken wings. After a couple, she found the rest unappetizing and stuffed them into Joseph's mouth.
Caught off-guard with a mouthful, Joseph glared at her with a dark expression.
With mock seriousness, Cassie proclaimed, “Isn't that the boyfriend's job? To eat what their girlfriends can't finish. Look at that couple there.”
Beside them sat a young college couple, the girl nibbling on her burger before passing it to her boyfriend. “It’s not good, you have it.”
The boyfriend hesitated, “Can I refuse?”
Pouting, the girlfriend retorted, “Why can’t you eat what I’ve just had? Do you find me repulsive, or is it that you don't love me?”
Joseph fell silent.
Across the table, Cassie, cradling her chin in her hands, batted her eyelashes at him. “I'm so jealous of them, I've always wanted that kind of love.”
“Shut up,” he grumbled, resentfully biting into her leftover chicken nugget.
He still couldn't fathom how she had changed from being so accommodating to him before. What was worse, he found himself surprisingly content with it.
Joseph then resigned himself to dealing with the remaining fries, the half-eaten burger, and the left-behind pastry.
Unbeknownst to the pair, someone nearby discreetly snapped a photo and shared it in the law firm's group chat.
Noah Collins, dining on steak at a steakhouse, nearly choked on his meal upon seeing the photo.
He quickly saved and shared it to the group chat with his buddies.
Lucas: Am I seeing things? Since when has Joseph set foot in a KFC?
Michael: I never imagined I’d see Joseph eating chicken nuggets; he must be an imposter.
Noah Collins: Oh, it's the real deal. A colleague saw Joseph and Cassie happily eating at KFC—though Joseph was mostly finishing Cassie's leftovers.
Lucas: That's rough, Joseph. Come back, and I'll treat you to some top-notch sushi.
Michael: Rough ++1, Joseph. Come back, and I’ll have a world-class chef cook for you.
Noah Collins: I bet Joseph wouldn’t give a damn about that now. As long as he has Cassie by his side, he’s game for anything.
...
It wasn’t until Joseph stepped out of KFC that he saw the chaos erupting in the group chat. His face darkened, and he massaged his temples with a headache brewing.
""Joey, thank you, I had a great time tonight.""
Back in the car, Cassie leaned in and planted a kiss on his lips, her eyes shining with a sweet and blissful light."
