Chapter 97
"It wasn't long before Lewis phoned in a fury.
""What on earth have you done now, you ingrate? You’ve even managed to offend your own uncle. Now that Wit Group is withdrawing their investment, you had better drag yourself back here immediately.”
...
The following morning, Cassie Brooks received a call from David.
""Do you have time to join me for lunch? I’d like to discuss some matters about the villa.""
""Sure.""
""I'll come pick you up,"" David offered, his voice a gentle murmur. ""You might not be familiar with the way to the restaurant.""
Cassie Brooks had no choice but to agree to his plans.
At noon, David's car arrived on time.
She got in, and he handed her a cup of iced tea, ""Sorry about the trouble yesterday.""
The gesture wasn't over the top, so Cassie Brooks accepted the milk tea without any fuss.
""Being backstabbed by someone so close must not sit well with you,"" she commented.
""You're very astute,"" David said, a touch of bitterness in his eyes, but his words were of sincere admiration. ""I'm deeply disappointed in Arthur Lewis; he wasn't always like this.""
Cassie Brooks felt a pang of melancholy—her once warm and sunny childhood friend had changed beyond recognition.
David started the car, “All of Wit Group’s business dealings with the Lewis Group have been terminated.""
""That's bound to be a heavy blow for Arthur Lewis,"" Cassie Brooks mused sympathetically, thinking how his chance to inherit the Lewis Group legacy was now at risk.
She felt a tinge of sadness.
After all the twists and turns, the person who ended up helping her get back at the scum wasn't her cousin, but her uncle Instead.
Out of curiosity, she wondered if Olivia Brooks would stay with Arthur Lewis if he failed to inherit the Lewis Group business.
It would certainly be interesting if Olivia Brooks were to dump him and climb a different social ladder.
""Aren't you happy about it?"" David had been watching her beautiful, innocent face; noticing her alternating between sighs and fighting back tears, he found it endearing.
""I am, but I’m sure Auntie Foster will turn to you to plead for leniency.""
David smiled at her, ""No amount of pleading will do, not after what he did to you.""
His gaze held a fondness that startled Cassie Brooks; she hardly dared to meet his eyes.
""Well... then, allow me to treat you to lunch today as a thank you for dealing with everything so fairly.""
""No, a fair response would've involved the police, so I should be the one to invite you as an apology.""
""But you’ve already gone above and beyond what I expected.""
""Can't you give me the chance to take you to lunch?"" David winked at her playfully.
Without further argument, Cassie Brooks acquiesced.
Half an hour later, they arrived at a famous upscale Western restaurant in Madison.
Cassie Brooks hesitated; dining at a Western restaurant seemed rather intimate for just the two of them.
""Let's go,"" David said, having already opened the passenger door for her.
Reluctantly, Cassie Brooks followed him inside.
David had clearly made reservations, as they were gracefully led to a prime spot by the window where the daylight streamed in, highlighting an arrangement of pink flowers airlifted from abroad.
""Pink roses, to symbolize how much I adore your radiant smile,"" David said, his tender gaze resting on her as he handed her the bouquet. ""Cassie, I might be bold for doing this, but I need you to know that you've captured my heart. You've been through so much lately, and I sincerely hope I can be there to shelter you from life's storms.""
Brooks's heart raced in utter confusion; she hadn't anticipated David's confession at this moment."
