Chapter 1343 Cassie, I'm sorry

Cassie was totally floored.

She shot a secret glare at Joseph, but he just played it cool, crossing his arms. "If Cassie thinks of you as a brother, then you're family to me too."

Everett was caught off guard, mulling over Cassie and Joseph's relationship. Yeah, it kinda made sense.

He still had no clue that Cassie and Joseph had just broken up again.

"Who said you're family?" Cassie was seriously fed up with Joseph's shamelessness. "Don't forget, I've already dumped you."

"That was all you, babe." Joseph's handsome face suddenly looked all hurt. "Cassie, that's harsh. I got close to Marigold to save Everett, putting myself out there to distract David. You have no idea how much crap I took from the Dixon family. And now you wanna cut me off."

"Enough, zip it."

Cassie slapped her hand over his mouth.

She had a gut feeling that if she let Joseph keep talking, it would only get worse.

Joseph shut up like a good boy, but his eyes were all puppy-dog and blinked at her with deep affection.

Cassie suddenly felt her hand on his face getting hot. She quickly pushed him away and glared at him, annoyed.

Joseph looked at her puffed-up face and smiled indulgently.

Everett was like, "Seriously, enough. You're here to visit a patient, not to flaunt your lovey-dovey stuff in front of a single guy like me."

"Don't be ridiculous, we're not." Cassie felt completely thrown off.

Everett smirked, thinking, 'Women always say one thing but mean another. From what he could see, Cassie and Joseph used to be head over heels, and now they were just bickering.'

Even though Everett was young and had never been in a relationship, he wasn't clueless about these things between guys and girls.

Joseph didn't give Cassie a chance to explain and switched gears. "Where are your folks?"

Everett said sadly, "My dad took my mom for treatment. She's really sick. She fainted in the car right after leaving the estate yesterday."

Cassie went quiet hearing that. She couldn't easily forgive what Isabella had done.

Everett suddenly looked up, seeing her cold expression, and felt a bit helpless. "I've heard from my dad about what my mom did. Please believe me, she wasn't like this before. It's my fault for bringing Olivia to her with that paternity test, making her think she had found her real daughter."

"At first, my mom just felt guilty towards Olivia. She didn't approve of some of Olivia's actions, but Olivia said she was kidnapped as a kid. My mom felt responsible, thinking if she had taken better care of her daughter, she wouldn't have been kidnapped. As a mom, you should get that feeling, right?"

Cassie stayed silent. She thought, 'If Sophia got kidnapped as a kid and turned bad when found, I wouldn't blame her either. I'd only blame myself.'

Seeing her go quiet, Everett quickly added, "And it's also my fault. When I came to Silverwood, I didn't dig deep enough, making my family believe in Olivia's identity. Later, when we got back to Silverwood, my mom was starting to get her memory back. It was probably then that Olivia started drugging her, causing her mood swings. She often argued with dad and me. If we had noticed earlier, things might have been different. But everyone thought Olivia was her real daughter. Who knew Olivia would harm my mom?"

"If it weren't for the drugs, my mom wouldn't have turned out like this. When she busted out of the hospital, she thought you killed her real daughter and went nuts. She had no sense left. She believed whatever people told her. In the end, she never expected her own brother and his wife to be so evil."

"So, you're saying she's innocent, that she was drugged, and I should just forgive her?" Cassie suddenly snapped.

Everett was taken aback, hesitated, then sighed, "After she found out you were her real daughter, she felt super guilty and remorseful. Yesterday, she saw Oliver and wanted to reunite with him, but she knew you hated her and didn't dare to speak."

"Everett, some things can't be undone just because of drugs. When she called me a bitch in the restaurant, it didn't matter. At most, it made me lose hope in a mother. What I can't forgive is her letting Olivia hurt Sophia. From that moment, there was no chance of us ever being mother and daughter again."

Suddenly, there was a thud behind her.

Cassie paused, sensing the eerie silence in the room. She turned around and saw Isabella and Declan standing at the door, with a bag of medicine dropped by Isabella's leg.

Isabella looked at her with a sorrowful expression, her eyes filled with guilt and bitterness. Her face was as pale as a ghost.

Cassie pressed her lips together.

Cassie hadn't seen Isabella for a long time. Her meeting at the restaurant with Declan was the first time she saw Isabella. Isabella had been so beautiful then. But in just two short months back in Madison, she had become much thinner and more haggard.

Cassie knew Isabella wasn't doing well.

But the wounds in Cassie's heart could never be erased.

"Mom." Everett was freaked out, not expecting his parents to suddenly show up.

He didn't know how much Isabella had heard. But he hoped it didn't make her condition worse.

"Everett, I'm fine."

Isabella shook her head. Her heart was in so much pain that she almost fainted. She wanted to throw a tantrum and smash things, but she was aware of her condition. She couldn't let the drugs control her anymore. She had made a mistake once and couldn't afford to make it again.

She looked seriously at Cassie in front of her.

As a mother, this was the first time Isabella looked seriously at her daughter. She thought wryly, 'Cassie really looks a lot like my younger self, radiant and bright. How could I have been so foolish back then? Cassie is my real daughter, yet I hurt and insult her repeatedly. I even suspected her of having an affair with Declan. It was utterly ridiculous. When everyone else is clear-headed, it seems I am the only one still acting crazy.'

"Cassie, I'm sorry," Isabella said with difficulty, her eyes turning red. "I let you down. I'm a terrible mother and an awful grandmother."

Cassie looked at Isabella's reddened eyes, and her throat suddenly felt bitter.

Cassie thought she could remain indifferent, but it turned out she wasn't that strong.
