Chapter 587

Lucas paused, the world momentarily stilling as he lit a cigarette. Once upon a time, he had been a firm believer in the notion that Cassie was the perfect match for Joseph. However, Cassie and Nina's constant meddling in their relationship had begun to sour his opinion. The subsequent death of Joyce and Megan's unexpected return had almost made him forget his initial endorsement of Cassie.

Joseph, feeling a tight knot of anxiety in his chest, attempted to placate Noah. "Once she's recovered, I'll let her come out," he promised.

Just as Noah was about to respond, the shrill ring of Lucas's phone cut through the tense atmosphere. Lucas picked it up, and after a brief exchange, the lit cigarette slipped from his lips and fell onto his pants, searing a hole through the fabric. So engrossed was he in the call that he didn't even notice.

It was only when Sarah rushed over to pat out the smoldering embers that Lucas finally hung up. His gaze was heavy as he relayed the devastating news, "I just got a call from the hospital. Cassie... Cassie is dead."

A silence, thick and suffocating, blanketed the room for what felt like an eternity.

Joseph's gaze was locked onto Lucas, a sensation akin to a sharp blade piercing his heart rendering him breathless. "What did you say?" His voice was barely a whisper, his eyes bore into Lucas with an intensity that was almost palpable.

Lucas's voice was laced with a complexity of emotions as he repeated, "When the nurse went to administer Cassie's injection, she found that Cassie had torn the bedsheet into strips and... and committed suicide."

Joseph's mind was a whirlwind of confusion and denial, the world around him seeming to darken. Cassie was dead? It was impossible. Was this some cruel April Fool's joke? Cassie was so young, why would she take her own life? He refused to believe it. He couldn't accept that Cassie was gone. In a fit of desperation, he bolted from the room.

Joseph's journey to the hospital was a blur, his mind consumed by the shocking news. Upon reaching the psychiatric department, he accosted one of the doctors, demanding, "Which room is Cassie's ward?"

"She has been taken to the morgue," came the chilling response.

"The morgue?" Joseph's breath hitched, a horrifying realization flashing in his eyes. "Why did you take her to the morgue?"

The doctor, visibly shaken by Joseph's terrifying expression, stammered, "She's dead. It's the hospital's protocol to take her to the morgue."

Without another word, Joseph shoved the doctor aside and made a beeline for the morgue. His hands trembled as he lifted the white cloth, revealing Cassie's lifeless body. She looked so peaceful, as if she were merely sleeping, save for the deep blue bruise marring her neck. Tentatively, he reached out to feel for a breath that he knew wouldn't come. She was cold. Ice cold. Was Cassie really dead?

In a fit of denial, Joseph slapped himself, hoping to wake from this nightmare. The last time he saw Cassie, she was full of life, cursing and biting. How could she be gone so suddenly?

"Joseph, get away from her." A forceful shove from behind jolted him out of his thoughts.

Laura rushed to Cassie's side, her eyes blazing with fury as she turned to Joseph. "Bastard, this is all your fault. You drove Cassie to her death. You're a murderer."

"I didn't drive her to her death, she was ill," Joseph retorted, his bloodshot eyes never leaving Cassie. He was still unable to accept this harsh reality.

Even though he didn't love Cassie, Joseph felt as if his soul had been ripped from his body, as if he had lost someone of great importance. Why was that?
