Chapter 562
A wave of disbelief washed over Joseph, his features hardening into a grim mask. " Cassie, the only woman I have ever loved is Megan. That has never changed," he declared, his voice echoing in the silence that followed.
Cassie's body shuddered, her world shaken by his blunt denial of their shared past. What did that make her in his eyes?
"Was everything you told me at the seaside villa a lie?" she choked out, teetering on the edge of despair. "You promised me that I was your only love in this lifetime. How could you turn your back on that so suddenly? Doesn't it seem strange to you?"
"Enough," Joseph snapped, his patience wearing thin under Cassie's probing gaze. "I know my own heart. I've grown tired of you, Cassie. If it weren't for our children, we would have been divorced long ago."
Cassie's breath hitched, her world tilting on its axis.
In that moment, she could almost hear the chilling sound of her own heart freezing over. Had Joseph been tolerating her all this time? Was he finally reaching his breaking point?
Joseph, however, was unyielding. "Once the children are born, we'll get a divorce. I'll provide you with enough money to live comfortably for the rest of your life. But from this day forward, stay away from Megan or face the consequences," he warned, his eyes glinting with an icy resolve that sent shivers down her spine.
"Joseph, you bastard!" Cassie exploded, her fury and despair spilling over. She seized a cup from the table and hurled it at him, tears streaming down her face.
Joseph deftly sidestepped the projectile, his gaze landing on Cassie's disheveled form. A surge of anger flashed in his eyes as he dialed the internal line. "Get security to remove this woman," he ordered curtly.
"Joseph," Rosalind pleaded, her voice filled with panic. "You can't do this."
"Rosalind, remember who you work for," Joseph retorted, his voice cold as ice.
"Fine, Joseph. If you want a divorce, I'll give it to you. But my child, I won't surrender them to anyone, and I certainly won't let Megan play the role of their stepmother," Cassie shouted back, her voice filled with raw emotion. With that, she turned on her heel and stormed out, leaving Joseph alone with his thoughts.
The aftermath of their argument left Joseph nursing a throbbing headache.
Just as he was attempting to regain his composure, Nathaniel knocked and entered the room. "Joseph, I have the results from the ashes you asked me to investigate," he announced.
"What ashes?" Joseph queried, looking up in confusion.
Nathaniel hesitated, taken aback by Joseph's apparent memory lapse. Hadn't Megan been taking care of him recently? Why was his memory deteriorating instead of improving? But recalling the results of the investigation sent a chill down Nathaniel's spine. "A while ago, you asked me to examine the ashes of Nina's mother. The results indicate that they are not human ashes."
Joseph's confusion deepened, his impatience flaring. "What are you implying?"
"Megan wanted to bury William and Nina's mother's ashes together, but the ashes of Nina's mother are not human," Nathaniel explained, his voice wavering slightly. Joseph's recent protectiveness of Megan made him tread lightly.
Joseph's gaze hardened, his eyes glinting with a frosty resolve. "Enough. Megan is not that kind of person."
"But-"
"Nathaniel, I've noticed your recent interactions with Cassie and your attempts to aid her. Let me make one thing clear: no one knows Megan better than I do. She is the woman I love, and I won't tolerate anyone questioning her," Joseph interjected icily. "This matter ends here."
Nathaniel felt a pang of injustice. "Joseph, I haven't-"
