Chapter 1399 Now I Like Her
"Yo, man, just quit this gig and find something new," Jonah said, giving Michael a look. "What do you think?"
Michael frowned and shot back, "She’s got nothing to do with me anymore."
Megan gave a weak, bitter smile. "I’m doing alright here. It’s tough, but this kind of grind keeps me grounded."
With that, she turned and walked away without a glance back.
Michael sat at the table, his face like stone.
His good mood was totally shot.
He pulled out his phone, thinking about calling Joseph to spill the beans about Megan.
But then he remembered what Jonah had said earlier—that Megan had cozied up to Jacob just to mess with Michael, making him back off so she could patch things up with her folks.
Yeah, it was only after Michael got burned that he realized his screw-up and went back to the Jude Family.
If that was true, without Megan’s sacrifice back then, Michael wouldn’t be where he was today.
For a moment, Michael hesitated.
Jonah shot him a sneaky glance. "Maybe I shouldn’t have dragged you here. With your status now, you used to bend over backward for Megan, but she only had eyes for Joseph. People always hold a grudge over their first love they couldn’t get. Look at her now; you could easily hook up with her, even keep her on the side."
"Enough. You can mess around with women all you want, but I’m not like you."
Michael found Jonah’s words super annoying, and his voice had a sharp edge. "I’m married now, and I won’t do anything to betray Laura and Maeve."
"Come on, we’re all guys here. When Laura was pregnant, you didn’t want to step up and chose Megan instead," Jonah said, waving it off.
Michael slammed the table and stood up, fuming. "I didn’t like Laura back then, but now I do."
Jonah raised an eyebrow, a bit ticked off but knowing Michael wasn’t someone to mess with.
"Alright, I’ll shut up. It’s my birthday, let’s eat," Jonah said with a forced grin.
The meal was pretty awkward and ended early.
In the parking lot, as they were saying goodbye and about to leave, Megan suddenly walked over, looking uneasy.
"She’s probably here for you. I’m out," Jonah said with a knowing smile and got into his car and left.
Michael kept a cold face and said nothing until Megan, looking pale, walked up to him.
It was almost winter, and a gust of wind made her shiver in her thin clothes.
Michael clenched his car keys and asked irritably, "What do you want now?"
Megan trembled, holding back tears as she spoke, "Michael, I’m begging you; don’t tell anyone about me working here."
"You mean Joseph and Cassie, right?"
Michael sneered. "You’re scared now, but why did you help David against Joseph back then? He was someone you once loved. Joseph went through hell because of you. Maybe you never loved him. Maybe you were just scheming to get close to him when you went to the mental hospital. Over the years, you’ve gained so much from him. I’ve never seen a woman as greedy as you."
"No, you got it all wrong. I really did love him. Loved him for so long, but how did he treat me in the end? I can't accept it," Megan said, tears streaming down her face.
Michael was beyond disappointed. "So you finally admit it. Megan, you’re terrifying. Maybe you’ve always been this way. To you, the three of us were probably just tools."
"Michael, believe it or not, it was pure chance I met Joseph at the mental hospital. I didn’t know who he was. I was just a kid then; I didn’t get all that stuff. I studied psychology like crazy to cure him. I even went abroad to get better at it, to be worthy of him. But then I went through the worst experience of my life. Still, I wanted to be with him. And what did Joseph do? He changed his mind! He didn't love me anymore!"
Megan gave a bitter smile. "Yeah, I did mess with his treatment to make him only love me."
"You’re nuts," Michael shouted, unable to hold back. "If you failed, Joseph would’ve ended up a fool."
"I thought even if he became a fool, at least he’d stay by my side. Better than him being with another woman."
Megan cried bitterly. "I went crazy for him, but three years later, when Cassie came back, he still ditched me. You have no idea how he said he wanted to marry me but went to Cassie every day to sleep with her. He lied to me over and over. I hated him, so I clung to his money, making sure he lost everything. I wanted him to see if Cassie would still be with him when he had nothing left. I never wanted his money. I just wanted him to be miserable."
Michael was a bit lost, not knowing what to believe. "Then what? Joseph had another accident, falling down the stairs. There was video showing you were there. After Joseph’s accident, you fled Whisperlyn City. If it wasn’t you, then who?"
"It was me."
Megan, exhausted from crying, nodded numbly. "After leaving you, I was imprisoned by David. He must have learned from Cassie about what I did to Joseph and wanted to use me."
She rolled up her sleeves, revealing numerous scars.
Michael’s eyes widened in shock.
"He locked me up," Megan said with a bitter smile. "I lived in darkness every day. I couldn’t even kill myself. When David was in a bad mood, he’d whip and beat me. He said if I didn’t help him, he’d strip me naked and throw me on the street."
Michael was confused. He kept asking himself, 'is this true?'
But if it wasn’t true, how could she have so many scars on her arms?
"So you used the same trick again to make Joseph lose his memory?"
"Actually, his goal was for me to turn Joseph into a complete fool. To deceive him, I did do that, but I made some small tweaks. You must have noticed that Joseph didn’t really become a fool. His intelligence grew over time, and eventually, his memory will come back," Megan said softly.
"Come back?"
