Chapter 1557 Very Tired
Michael rubbed his temples.
From the start of the wedding prep to the big day coming up, Megan was always worried the whole thing would be a joke.
Megan used to say when she was with him that as long as they were together, nothing else mattered.
Then she said she wanted a wedding, and he agreed. Later, she confessed she felt insecure and feared being looked down upon at the wedding, so she wanted a grand wedding that others would envy.
Michael agreed to that too.
Megan said most people use cars to pick up the bride, but she wanted something different, so he arranged for a helicopter to pick her up.
Everything was top-notch, even though he was financially strained now. He never refused her, even though he was super busy, he personally arranged everything.
But she still said people would laugh at her.
Were other people's opinions that important?
Megan didn't even know how many times he had been scolded by his family for organizing this wedding.
Because everyone knew Michael owed Laura a wedding, but after the divorce, he gave Megan a grand wedding banquet. Caroline pointed at his nose and scolded him, saying he was trampling on his ex-wife's dignity.
James scolded him for betraying his marriage and not knowing how to keep a low profile, calling him shameless.
Carl said the whole world knew Megan was the other woman, and Michael giving Megan a high-profile, extravagant wedding would have a bad influence on the country, and the Jude family would not attend.
But Michael still did it without hesitation.
Yet Megan was still not satisfied.
Michael felt drained, too exhausted to say another word.
Megan threw a tantrum for a while, then noticed Michael's bad mood. She got nervous and quickly squeezed out a tear, saying weakly, "I'm sorry, I went too far. I'm just afraid people will criticize you. It's all my fault. If you hadn't married me, you wouldn't be so neglected by the Jude family."
"Alright, don't overthink it. I don't care," Michael was very tired. Seeing her crying again, he had to force a smile to comfort her.
Michael kept telling himself that he owed Megan this.
The wedding was grand, but there were few distinguished guests, and none of his close friends attended.
Almost the same did Megan's friends, only a few college classmates and some colleagues of hers came. They weren't very close, but Megan sent invitations to make it lively.
Standing at the wedding, Michael glanced at the guests below, feeling desolate and disappointed.
He had imagined his wedding before. Just a few months ago, Laura had excitedly talked about it, saying she would have Bernice as her bridesmaid and Sophia and Oliver as flower girls.
At that time, Caroline also gave various suggestions.
He imagined the wedding day with family, relatives, and friends filling the seats.
But in just a few months, everything changed.
The bride became Megan.
Even now, Michael felt like he was dreaming, stuck in a dream he couldn't wake up from.
"Now, the groom may kiss the bride," the officiant suddenly said.
Michael slowly came back to his senses, lifted the bride's veil, and saw Megan's pretty face. But on closer look, her smile was somewhat stiff.
It was a surgically altered face, almost perfectly done. The scars on Megan's face were gone, and she looked even better than before, but Michael felt it was so unfamiliar that he couldn't bring himself to kiss her.
Seeing him hesitate, Megan's smile gradually stiffened. She whispered, "Michael."
The officiant joked, "Our groom is so mesmerized by the bride's beauty that he's stunned."
There was a burst of laughter from the audience.
Michael closed his eyes and kissed her.
On the wedding night, the villa's butler handed Megan the gift registry.
Megan glanced at it, very dissatisfied, "Why are there so few gifts? The most expensive one is only worth twenty thousand dollars. Michael, I remember you used to give wedding gifts worth hundreds of thousands of dollars to your friends. You were very generous before, and they are so stingy now."
Michael thought that none of his old friends had come, so there wouldn't be any expensive gifts. But he didn't explain, just silently smoked. He didn't like smoking before, but recently he had become addicted to it.
It seemed that only when he smoked did he feel less irritable.
"You used to value friendship too much," Megan sighed, "But times have changed. You're no longer the head of the Jude family, and you don't have as much money. We also have to manage our household expenses. How about this, I'll take care of the household expenses from now on, and you can focus on your work, okay?"
Michael silently looked at her. He wasn't so naive as to not understand what Megan intended to.
She was asking for financial control.
If it were before, he wouldn't have minded handing it over, but this wedding had made him doubt whether she would squander it.
To be honest, he was financially tight now.
He couldn't help but think of Laura again. Whether it was her family's condition or her earning ability, she was better than Megan, but she never squandered. When they were planning their wedding, she didn't like to make it too extravagant.
Michael didn't know why he kept thinking of Laura today. Maybe it was because living with Megan recently had been too oppressive.
"If you don't want to, forget it," seeing Michael not speaking, Megan bit her lip in grievance, "I'm just afraid you'll be too tired. And I've known you for so long, I know you're really not good at managing money. Are you afraid I'll take your money away?"
"I'm not." Michael stood up, took out a card and gave it to her, "There's ten million dollars here, which is enough for daily expenses. If it's not enough, ask me for more."
"Ten million dollars?" Megan's heart sank. How long would ten million dollars last?
She steadied herself and looked up, "Michael, can you tell me how much money you have now? I just want to have an idea of our family's assets."
"Megan, the most liquid funds I can access now are about a hundred million dollars. There are several investment projects that requires a large amount, and the Ocean Blue group isn't doing well this year. I hope you understand," Michael explained helplessly.
Megan was devastated. She didn't expect Michael to be so poor now.
A hundred million dollars, she used to meet those who had more money than Michael.
