Chapter 1524 Did I Upset You?
Carl didn't even try to stop him.
Laura kept quiet too. She just lowered her head and moved closer to Derek, helping him calm Maeve down.
That scene really ticked Michael off. He couldn't help but say, "Laura, I heard you coughing on the phone earlier. Stay away from Maeve so you don't get her sick."
Then he just walked off.
Laura was fuming.
Michael must be out of his mind. Didn't he see she was wearing a mask and hadn't even talked to Maeve?
"Ignore him," even Magnolia had enough. "What right does he have to talk to Laura like that? And don't think I don't know it was Megan who called him just now. We were supposed to have dinner together, but he bailed as soon as Megan called. What a jerk!"
"You're sharp, Magnolia," Derek chuckled, "But I don't think Michael's having a great time either. Didn't you see how annoyed he looked when he answered the phone?"
Magnolia snorted, "Some women, once they get married, realize reality is nothing like they imagined. Plus, Megan's paralyzed and disfigured. You think her mindset wouldn't change? Someone as greedy as Megan will just get more anxious, irritable, and suspicious. She's not easy to deal with."
Laura was taken aback, remembering how Megan looked in her wheelchair. She couldn't help but laugh, "Magnolia, you know everything."
"Of course," Magnolia's tone shifted as she suddenly glared at Derek, "Where were you last night? You didn't come back all night. Were you with that guy again?"
Carl chimed in angrily, "Derek, if you keep this up, don't blame me for breaking your legs."
As the President, Carl's life was a mess too.
He'd been super busy lately. Michael was being played by Megan, and Derek only thought about guys.
Laura quickly said, "No, I had a bad fever last night, and Derek took me to the hospital. He stayed to take care of me afterward."
"That's good," Magnolia relaxed, "But when I asked you yesterday, you said it was just a minor cold. Why didn't you tell us you had a fever? The Presidential Palace has its own doctors."
"I was afraid of infecting Maeve and you," Laura explained.
Carl nodded, thinking Laura was very considerate.
With Christmas coming up, there were a lot of political matters to handle, and neither Carl nor Magnolia could afford to get sick.
"Seeing you all get along makes me happy, but your marriages still worry us. Laura is fine, but Derek really annoys me," Carl looked seriously at his son. "Come to my study later."
Derek's handsome face immediately turned grim.
After dinner, Laura took Maeve and the nanny back.
Laura was a bit worried that Derek would get scolded by Carl again. After getting back to her room, she sent Derek a message: [Did Carl hit you?]
Half an hour later, Derek replied: [He didn't hit me, but I got another lecture.]
Laura was relieved, but she wondered if Carl had only lectured him about his marriage.
It wasn't until the next day that she learned something else from Magnolia.
Magnolia said, "Laura, you should have a chat with Derek. This time, your Godfather personally introduced a girl to him. She's the daughter of Carl's friend of over twenty years. They used to play together as kids but lost touch after going to different universities abroad. She's not only a top university grad but also fluent in four or five languages. She's really accomplished."
Magnolia went on, "Even if Derek doesn't marry her, it would be good for him to date her. At least it would create some buzz. His dad said Derek has to get married by next year to stop all the ridiculous gossip. If Derek doesn't follow the plan and insists on doing his own thing, Carl will have to remove him from his current status next year."
Laura was stunned for a moment before tentatively asking, "What about Derek's opinion?"
"Carl gave Derek a good talk yesterday, and Derek said he'd seriously consider it this time," Magnolia patted Laura's hand and sighed, "But I'm still not convinced."
"I'll talk to him. I also hope Derek will have a good future," Laura replied.
Laura could tell this time was different from the previous matchmaking attempts. Carl was serious.
If Derek got married next year, he probably wouldn't be able to stay with her when she had a cold. He'd spend holidays like Christmas with his wife, and after work, his coffee and cakes would be for his wife.
Laura should be happy for him, but she felt pretty annoyed.
After 8 PM, Derek still hadn't come back.
Laura sent a message on Facebook: [What are you doing? I heard the Godfather introduced you to a lady. Are you on a date?]
Derek: [Yes.]
Laura stared at the message for a while, then irritably threw her phone aside.
The next morning, while heading to breakfast, she ran into Derek on the garden path.
"Good morning," Derek waved at her.
Laura glared at him and walked straight ahead.
Derek was taken aback and quickly caught up with his long strides, walking beside her, "Did I upset you?"
"No," Laura denied it, but she was definitely unhappy. After he sent that message last night, he hadn't talked to her until now. She felt ignored by Derek.
When Laura went on dates before, she still chatted with him on Facebook every day.
"Did your cold completely go away?" Derek suddenly asked.
"Yes," Laura replied.
"Then when should we try it?" Derek suddenly said.
At first, Laura didn't get it. It wasn't until she walked a few more steps that she remembered what they had talked about that morning.
She pretended not to understand, "What?"
"Don't you remember?" Derek frowned, "You promised to let me try kissing you."
Laura's face turned red with anger. She glared at him and said in a strange tone, "Don't bother me anymore. Didn't Carl introduce you to a girl?"
"You mean Blair?" Derek asked.
"So her name is Blair," Laura raised an eyebrow. "She must be a gentle and beautiful lady."
"You're wrong. She's not gentle at all," Derek corrected with a smile. "She's quite outgoing."
"That's even better. She suits you," Laura said with a half-smile. "So go find her. Godfather said you two should get married next year."
