Chapter 1074 Lucas Misunderstood Nina

As Cassie said, Joseph was growing horror.

He had to admit that Marcus was truly vicious.

Or perhaps, when he went to Silverwood, Marcus had already set his sights on him and had been plotting in the shadows.

Marcus even saw through David's ambition and took the opportunity to win him over. They were all deeply scheming people, so both he and Cassie were deceived.

"Cassie, I'm sorry. If I had trusted you back then, we wouldn't end up like this," Joseph said.

"No, we would still end up like this because of Megan. You cared so much about Joyce, not to mention Megan," Cassie said helplessly, "Before Megan hypnotized you, when you took me to the party, I was isolated and humiliated by Megan, Lucas, and Michael. You never truly stood by my side but favored them even though they targeted me. Hence, I lost faith in our relationship, but I couldn't leave because I was pregnant at the time."

Joseph looked regretful. He couldn't remember much of what Cassie said because his memory was in disarray.

Lucas, however, sincerely apologized, "I'm sorry. You're right. I was prejudiced against Nina and, by extension, against you. I apologize for everything I did."

Cassie sneered. "I'm still alive, so you can apologize to me. But what about the dead? Nina is still not cleared. She died, and then Esmeralda and William passed away, too. Esmeralda's ashes were even replaced with a dog's ashes by Megan."

Lucas remained silent for a long time. Nina's beautiful face flashed through his mind. Even after so many years, he still remembered her so clearly.

Cassie, welling up with tears, said, "Nina told me that she used to get along well with you all. But she didn't understand why, even though it was always Megan who bullied her, as soon as Megan cried, everyone thought she was the one bullying Megan. Maybe in your eyes, Megan was always the one who needed protection."

Lucas was momentarily lost.

There were things they hadn't considered before. Listening to Cassie, he realized that every time they saw Megan crying in front of Nina, who wore a cold expression, they assumed Nina was bullying Megan.

Lucas thought to himself, 'So, did I misunderstand Nina all along? Nina was wronged. It was me who found a lawyer and sent her to prison.'

Lucas turned and left in silence.

He had always disliked Nina and had no fondness for her. He even regretted dating her when he was young.

But now that she was gone, Lucas was numb.

He was a playboy, cold and ruthless. He discarded women when he grew tired of them. He really didn't understand what it felt like to love someone.

Lucas stood by the window, lit a cigarette, and put it in his mouth.

Amidst the swirling smoke, he recalled the first time he made love to Nina in high school.

Back then, Nina's young face was full of a captivating blush.

Later, no woman could make him feel pure emotions.

Maybe in this lifetime, Lucas would never see Nina again.

If he saw her one more time, what should he say?

Sorry? I wronged you?

However, it was all useless because Nina could never come back.

In the hospital room, Cassie remained silent, her beautiful face full of pain.

Joseph carefully peeled an orange beside her. He understood that Nina was her pain.

Now, no matter how many apologies he made, the damage was done. He could only try to make amends.

"Cassie, I'll help you uncover the truth from back then and bring the real culprit to justice," Joseph said, handing her a piece of orange.

"I'm not hungry," Cassie said flatly, "I didn't say all that to blame you entirely. I blame myself, too. If I had known earlier, I wouldn't have let David frame Nina. I even married David."

"That's not your fault. David was too deceitful. I used to think he was just a loser." Joseph mocked himself and continued to comfort her.

For the next two days, Cassie stayed in the hospital.

She didn't check the news on her phone, so she didn't see the overwhelming insults directed at her online.

She could endure it, but Laura couldn't.

Those insults made Laura furious. When she came to see Cassie, she started cursing as soon as she walked in, "Those people online don't know anything. It makes me so mad. David is so vicious. The worst part is that he beat you like this and only got five days. Isn't that infuriating?"

"There's nothing we can do. David turned himself in, had a good attitude, and public opinion was on his side. The police don't dare to punish him too harshly," Cassie said calmly.

"Why don't you say something to defend yourself? You just let people online insult you. David is so capable; he's been trending for days, and the heat hasn't died down," Laura said, heartbroken, "You're acting just like I did back then. Wherever you go, you'll probably get cursed at."

"I'm used to it. Ever since Joseph kidnapped me, I've been talked about wherever I go." Cassie looked indifferent. "I am not afraid of that."

"But your company's stock has been dropping," Laura said worriedly.

"That doesn't matter. I'm the only shareholder, so it's just my money that's losing," Cassie said calmly.

Laura was so impressed she almost gave a thumbs up, thinking, 'Cassie is really optimistic!'

"By the way, how are you?" Cassie asked with concern.

"I'm okay. I've just been feeling nauseous lately and don't have much of an appetite," Laura said, leaning close to Cassie's ear and glancing at Joseph in the kitchen. "What's going on with you and him? Are you getting back together? Can he cook? He won't burn down the kitchen, will he?"

Cassie looked conflicted.

As for Joseph, she didn't know how to describe it. These past few days, he hadn't even gone to the company and had been taking care of her meticulously around the clock.

Joseph even washed her clothes and cooked her meals.

Although the food wasn't particularly delicious, it was clear that Joseph put in the effort, and it wasn't as bad as it used to be.

However, when it came to getting back together with Joseph, she still couldn't do it as if nothing had happened.
