Chapter 1443 Your Own Handling That Need Some Work

"Forget it."

This time, he really kept his eyes on the road, not daring to get distracted.

Laura felt a bit guilty. "How about I get you some new clothes?"

"Well, if you're gonna do that, you'll need to get me a whole set," Derek said with a grin. "The shirt underneath is probably soaked too."

"Alright," Laura agreed, not worried about the cost. "What size do you wear?"

"Size L." He wasn't fat, just well-built, so he needed a size L.

Laura nodded, making a mental note to hit the mall tomorrow.

As they neared the Presidential Palace, something clicked in her mind. "By the way, why'd you come over today? And how did the news about my divorce get out? And how did they know I canceled the wedding? Didn't you say you had it all under control?"

Realizing she sounded accusatory, she quickly added, "Don't get me wrong, I'm not blaming you. I'm just curious. I know you were trying to help."

After a moment of awkward silence, Derek chuckled.

"What's so funny? Don't take it the wrong way," Laura said, worried he might be upset.

When they arrived at the Presidential Palace, Derek parked the car, rested his left hand on the steering wheel, and looked at her with a helpless but handsome expression. "I got here in time because I got a tip-off. The company that took your wedding photos leaked the news about you and Michael getting a divorce. I know those reporters too well, so I rushed over. Also, I tried calling you several times before I got there, but you didn't pick up."

Laura pulled out her phone and saw two missed calls from Derek. He had also sent her a Facebook message telling her not to leave the company and to wait for him to pick her up.

She had put her phone on silent while working in the lab and had completely forgotten about it.

Well, this was awkward.

She thought she had handled the wedding company issue herself, even compensating them with some money, thinking it was all settled.

Turns out, the wedding company had betrayed her, and she had no idea, thinking it was Derek who hadn't handled it properly.

Her face turned red with embarrassment. "I'm sorry."

"Laura, you shouldn't doubt my skills," Derek teased with a smile. "It's your own handling that need some work."

Laura cleared her throat, her eyes darting around before shamelessly saying, "I'm not good at it. I'm not a guy, so it doesn't matter."

Derek switched gears. "So, I found out the wedding shop owner took your compensation and agreed to keep quiet, but since you and Michael were splitting up, he probably didn't take it seriously. To get in good with another big shot, he leaked the news to the reporters. I managed to block it online in time, but there are definitely some rumors floating around Whisperlyn City. Just be careful."

"Derek, I can't thank you enough." Laura was truly grateful. He had handled everything so well. "If you hadn't shown up earlier..."

"Next time, keep your phone on," Derek cut her off. "And don't worry, those reporters won't bother you again."

Laura was curious. "What are you planning to do?"

"If they can't do their job right, they shouldn't be reporters," Derek said calmly, like he was talking about the weather.

But somehow, Laura found him even more attractive in that moment.

The more Derek stood up for her, the more she felt she owed him.

So the next day, Laura went shopping with Cassie.

At first, Cassie thought they were shopping for her, but when they walked into a men's clothing store, she said, "Joseph doesn't need any more clothes; he's got too many."

"I'm not buying for Joseph. I got Derek's clothes dirty yesterday, so I need to make it up to him," Laura said, browsing through the store.

The clothes were too trendy. Derek worked in a government job and usually dressed more maturely and conservatively.

"Derek?" Cassie teased, "You seem pretty close to him."

"He's a good guy. If it weren't for him, Carl and Violet probably wouldn't have helped me so much, and the Jude Family wouldn't have agreed to my divorce with Michael," Laura explained, recounting the incident with the reporters.

Cassie sighed. "So Derek's a stand-up guy. Why isn't Michael like that? It would've been better if you had married Derek instead."

Laura snorted. "How could I be that lucky? Good men are always taken. And don't say that; Derek is like a brother to me now."

Cassie sighed. "Your friends are all pretty great. Elliott is mature and steady. Even though he's never been married, he's not a playboy. Derek has a good personality too. When I was going through a tough time, I interacted with him, and he was very polite. And Joseph said Derek is not a simple guy; he might even surpass Carl in the future."

"Really?" Laura was surprised, not expecting Joseph to think so highly of Derek.

Cassie smiled. "Derek is the youngest minister in Madison. He wouldn't have gotten there without some serious skills. And from what Joseph said, when Ralph's family fell, Derek did a lot behind the scenes. After Ralph was arrested, most of the power shifted to Derek."
