Chapter 971 Memories Were Tampered with

"Now my condition has basically improved, but recently I realized that although I've forgotten many things from the past, the things I've forgotten the most are those between me and my ex-wife, Cassie. I used to think I didn't love her. I only remembered the bad things about her, and I was very disgusted with her. But recently, there have been bits and pieces of evidence suggesting that I might have cared about Cassie before. However, I couldn't recall caring about her or certain things related to her. I used to hate street food, but later, I heard from my friends that I had them with Cassie. I even offended many people to stand up for her and spent a fortune on an expensive and meaningful diamond necklace for her," Joseph murmured.

Harold furrowed his brows. "Is it just things about Cassie that you don't remember?"'

"Not exactly. There are other things I don't remember well either, so I didn't pay much attention to them before. But recently, I found that most of the things I've forgotten seem to be related to Cassie. It's strange. If I cared about Cassie before, why did I later have such a complete memory of being disgusted with her? But I realize recently that there are many missing memories between Cassie and me." Joseph looked bewildered. He really couldn't figure it out. "Sorry, Harold. I might not be making much sense. Even I don't know how to describe that feeling."

Harold nodded, took out a piece of paper and a pen, and drew a dotted line. "This line represents your current state. The blank spaces are the memories you've lost."

"Yes." Joseph nodded.

Harold frowned. "Did you ever feel something was wrong with your memory before, or did you just realize it recently?"

Joseph was stunned for a moment and shook his head. "The doctors said I had a mental illness. At that time, my condition was similar to dementia in older people. If not treated quickly, it could deteriorate into idiocy or a childlike state."

Harold said, "One last question. Have your emotions changed?"

"Three years ago, I loved Megan, who I grew up with. I thought I would always love Megan." Joseph frowned. "But strangely, when my ex-wife Cassie came back, I easily fell for her again. I'm not a fickle person. Recently, I realized that I might have cared about Cassie before, but I forgot it."

"Forgot it?" Harold pondered Joseph's words. "Three years ago, did you realize your memories of Cassie were incomplete? If you didn't like Cassie, why did you marry her? And how was your life together?"

"I remember." Joseph nodded. "I remember why we got married. Cassie married me because she mistook me for a relative of her ex-boyfriend. Later, when Cassie found out my true identity, she tried every way to seduce me. I didn't like Cassie at all. Being with her was full of disgust. I loved another woman."

"So, your memories of your ex-wife Cassie were a complete line before, but now you realize it's actually a dotted line." Harold looked calmly at Joseph. "Many people forget someone they were closely involved with. Gradually, you'll find many things that don't add up. Why did it take you three years to realize this? And it wasn't even you who realized it; but a friend told you by chance."

Joseph was shaken and said to himself inwardly, 'Yes, I have forgotten so many things, but my brain still has a complete line of memories about my experiences with Cassie, as if I hadn't forgotten anything.'

Joseph's tall frame trembled. "Harold, why did this happen? Is this also because of the illness?"

"Illness wouldn't cause this." Harold shook his head and took a sip of hot water. "Maybe the straight line of memories you think you have isn't complete, or someone might have drawn that line for you. Do you know about robots, which you can delete programs and input commands on what to obey and who to like?"

Joseph's mind flashed sharply. His handsome face turned pale. Did someone delete programs from his brain?

Joseph gave a forced smile. "That's impossible, Harold. I'm not a robot."

Harold said seriously, "Yes, as far as I know, there's an ancient hypnotic technique from Yugrot. It can alter a person's emotions and memories without them realizing it."

Joseph was very surprised. He thought, 'Hypnosis?' Did someone alter my memories and emotions?

"You mean, I might have loved my ex-wife Cassie before, but later, someone altered my memory to make me think I loved another woman?" Joseph asked.

"Sorry, I can't be sure," Harold said. "But the symptoms you described are very similar to those caused by this ancient hypnotic technique from Yugrot. The person who performed it must be someone you trust a lot; otherwise, he wouldn't have succeeded. Also, this person must be very skilled in psychological therapy."

As for someone he trusted a lot, Joseph thought of Megan. Megan used to be the person he trusted the most, to the point where he believed everything she said.

And Megan's skills in psychological therapy were top-notch globally.

But thinking that Megan might have altered his memory made Joseph shiver.

He still found it hard to believe.

'Could Megan, who supported and encouraged Joseph in the psychiatric hospital when they were young, have become so ruthless and malicious?'

"Harold, do you know this kind of hypnotic technique?" Joseph asked blankly.

"I don't." Harold shook his head. "This ancient hypnotic technique is too malicious and has long been banned by the international community. Imagine if everyone knew it, the world would be chaotic. Moreover, the success rate of this hypnosis is very, very low. Out of ten people, at most, one would succeed, and the other nine would become idiots due to failure."

"Become idiots?" Joseph was shocked again. "So if I was really hypnotized and it failed, I would have become an idiot?"

"Yes, that's why this ancient hypnotic technique has been lost. About fifty or sixty years ago, someone tried to hypnotize a wealthy man. The wealthy man ended up becoming an idiot, and his family captured and executed the psychologist."

Harold thought for a moment and added, "Also, even if you find out you've been hypnotized, don't try to cure it and recover your original memories. The brain's structure is very complex. Your chances of curing it are only 0.01%. If you fail, you won't just be able to return to normal; you'll also become an idiot."

Joseph was once again stunned for a long time. He had wanted to recover his memories.
