Chapter 572
Joseph found himself grappling with an inexplicable discomfort, a sensation that seemed to stem from three simple words.
"You're coming back with me," he declared, his voice low and authoritative.
However, Cassie remained unmoved, too weary to pay him any mind. His voice, once a source of comfort, now only served to ignite a fury within her.
"Did you not hear what I said? You're pregnant now, you can't endure this chaos," Joseph insisted, pulling her to her feet.
Cassie, however, pushed him away, a sad smile gracing her lips. "Do you think I relish this turmoil? My friends are unconscious, how can I think of rest? But of course, someone like you, who only has eyes for Megan, would never understand."
Joseph's gaze fell upon Cassie's pallid face, hesitation gnawing at him. Finally, he shrugged off his coat and draped it over her shoulders.
Cassie's lashes fluttered in surprise, but her astonishment was short-lived. Joseph's voice echoed in her ear, "Don't let my children freeze."
The spark in Cassie's eyes dimmed once more.
She laughed bitterly at herself. What was she hoping for at this point?
Just as Joseph settled down, his phone rang, shattering the silence.
Cassie glanced at the screen, her eyes catching the name "Megan."
Joseph rose and stepped aside to answer the call.
Even in the quiet corridor, even in the dead of night, Cassie could faintly hear Megan's sobs through the phone.
Suddenly, the lights in the operating room flickered off.
The doctor wheeled David out, his eyes still open. Upon seeing Cassie's weak smile, he reassured her, "You must be tired, go back and rest, I'm fine."
Fine?
Did David look fine after undergoing surgery?
Tears welled up in Cassie's eyes.
Just as Joseph ended the call and turned around, he caught sight of Cassie and David sharing a silent exchange. His brows furrowed instinctively, "You were just operating on him, weren't you?"
"If it wasn't for David rushing to save Laura, she would've been beyond help by the time I got there," Cassie shot Joseph a cold glance, "Nathan's men stabbed him in the arm. Previously, he was stabbed in the abdomen by Brandon Wright and lost a kidney. All of this is Nathan's doing. This time, I'll ensure he's put behind bars."
Joseph rubbed his temples, taken aback by Nathan's actions. He was angry, yes, but Cassie's fury seemed too harsh. " Cassie, are you sympathizing with him?"
"All I know is that if it weren't for him, Laura would've been violated today, and if it weren't for him, I would be dead," Cassie retorted, her gaze burning with hatred, "If you dare to defend Nathan in court again, we'll meet there."
Cassie's resolute stare made Joseph's heart sink. He glared back at her, "Fine."
With that, he turned to Nathaniel, "Stay here and look after her."
Without another glance, Joseph strode away.
Cassie watched his retreating figure, her mind a whirlwind of confusion.
Did Joseph truly intend to protect Nathan till the end?
If they were to face off in court, even with the best lawyer, victory seemed unlikely.
" Cassie." David's gentle voice broke through her thoughts.
She turned to find him smiling weakly at her, "Go after him."
