Chapter 1451 Not Even Spare a Sick Person
She remembered she wasn't dead; she'd been reborn in Bernice's body.
She almost died again.
"Bernice, Dr. Nelson stayed with you all night," Gabriella said, glancing nervously at the other side of the bed.
Bernice turned and saw Lucas there.
Lucas had stayed all night, not expecting Bernice to be gentle when she woke up, but her gaze was icy cold when she saw him.
"Mr. Nelson, are you here because you're worried I didn't die?" Bernice asked, her voice hoarse and indifferent.
Gabriella tensed up, but Lucas didn't seem too angry.
"You're afraid of water; why didn't you tell me yesterday?" Lucas asked, staring at her.
"Did you give me a chance to say it? Or did you ever see me as a person?" Bernice smirked, mocking him. "Mr. Nelson, you should leave. I'm very tired. Just seeing your face now gives me psychological trauma."
"Psychological traumas can be overcome," Lucas said, standing up straight. "What do you want to eat? I'll have someone bring it to you."
Bernice ignored him and looked at Gabriella instead. "Get me a bowl of porridge."
Gabriella felt awkward, especially after seeing Lucas's unpleasant expression.
"Okay, I'll go get it now," Gabriella said, quickly slipping away.
Bernice closed her eyes, clearly not wanting to deal with Lucas.
Lucas instinctively reached for a pack of cigarettes but remembered he was in a hospital and held back.He sighed, feeling a mix of frustration and resignation. She didn't want to talk to him? Fine.
Lucas leaned down and kissed her on the mouth.
Even though her lips were dry from the fever, it didn't stop him.
Bernice was shocked. When she realized she was being kissed, she immediately resisted and pushed him away.
But she was weak from the fever, and Lucas held her hands down, pressing them to the side as he kissed her.
Bernice kept her mouth tightly shut, giving him no opportunity.
Lucas wasn't in a hurry; he kissed her lips slowly and methodically, his hands not idle either.
Bernice couldn't take it anymore, her eyes filled with disgust. "Lucas, do you just want to have sex that badly? You won't even spare a sick person?"
"With the way you look now, I'm not really interested. But since you won't look at me or talk to me, I have no choice," Lucas said, touching her chin with a roguish smile. He never thought he'd act so brazenly with a woman.
"Bernice, I was wrong yesterday, but I didn't know you were afraid of water," Lucas admitted, his voice softening.
"I understand," Bernice said indifferently. "My body hasn't recovered, and I'm very tired. Can I rest now?"
"Of course, you can," Lucas said, not moving from where he stood.
Bernice became impatient. "Can you leave?"
"My legs are on my body; you have no right to make me leave," Lucas said, raising an eyebrow.
"You're right," Bernice nodded weakly, not saying another word to him.
In the Presidential Palace, Laura woke up from a hangover, sunlight streaming through the curtains.
She sat up abruptly, her head pounding.
Wasn't she drinking with Bernice? How did she end up at home?
Was it already the next day?
Laura felt awful, quickly threw on some clothes, and rushed downstairs. "Kennedy, where's Maeve?"
Before she could finish, she saw Derek holding Maeve on the sofa, a bottle in his hand. Maeve's chubby face looked content as she drank, like a little piglet.
The scene was pretty odd.
Hearing Laura's voice, Derek glanced up but didn't say anything, like he didn't want to disturb Maeve.
Kennedy, carrying a basin of water, quietly explained, "Mr. Jude brought you back yesterday. You were drunk, and Maeve kept crying for you. I couldn't handle it alone, so Mr. Jude put Maeve to sleep. This morning, Maeve was a bit fussy, and Mr. Jude calmed her down. Now she's hungry and drinking milk."
Laura felt guilty and embarrassed but didn't expect Derek to be so good with Maeve.
After Maeve finished drinking, Derek brought her over.
Maeve saw Laura and immediately reached out to be held.
Laura quickly took her, apologizing, "Maeve, I'm sorry. Mommy won't get drunk again. I'm sorry."
Laura kept apologizing, feeling really guilty.
She had deprived Maeve of a complete family, and as a mom, she hadn't been doing her job.
Derek watched her, his expression unusually serious. "I hope you mean that."
Laura looked up weakly. "Thanks for yesterday."
"Bringing back a drunkard was no big deal," Derek frowned. "But I hope this doesn't happen again. Maeve would be very pitiful. I get that you're going through a divorce, and Michael is close with Megan, so it's normal to feel upset. But you have to think about Maeve. If you want custody, you have to be strong for her. Maeve doesn't have a dad around, and if her mom is drunk, even though she's young, she'll still crave love."
Laura's face blushed with shame. "I wasn't drinking because of Michael. I met with Megan yesterday and found out some things that upset me."
Derek's eyes softened a bit, but he still said, "When you're upset, think about your child. She needs you. Maybe it's harsh, but no one can replace a mother's role."
"Okay." Laura nodded obediently.
"Go have breakfast. I have to get to work." Derek gently pinched Maeve's cheek and then turned to leave.
Laura watched him change his shoes at the door, feeling a bit dazed.
This scene reminded her of when she used to live with Michael, watching him go to work every morning.
She suddenly trembled and quickly asked, "By the way, did you see Bernice yesterday? Was she drunk?"
Derek paused and said, "When I arrived, it was just you and Lucas. He was the one who notified me."
"Lucas?" Laura was stunned. "Damn, Bernice also drank a lot yesterday. Lucas wouldn't do anything to her, would he?"
"Impossible. Bernice should have left early," Derek said, thinking Laura was overthinking it. He then changed his shoes and left.
Laura quickly dialed Bernice's phone, but a man's voice answered, one that sounded very familiar.
"Bernice, someone is looking for you."
Laura was completely shocked. "Lucas, why do you have Bernice's phone?"
