Chapter 270
""Don't say that. I've never wanted anything from the Chapmans,"" Cassie replied, her voice heavy with fatigue. ""But I must make a trip to New York.""
""Go,"" David said softly, laying his hand over hers. ""Don't worry about me. The caretaker will take good care of things here.""
""Thank you."" Cassie was truly touched. David was different from Joseph—gentle like water, always accommodating her.
In contrast, Joseph was domineering and proud. She always had to be submissive around him or go to great lengths to please him just to get his approval.
She used to think dealing with Joseph was exhausting and didn't appreciate being watched all the time.
But now, somewhat inexplicably, she had started to feel unsettled without it.
""What's on your mind?""
The girl standing in front of him suddenly looked distant. A shadow passed fleetingly across David's eyes, and his grip on her hand tightened ever so slightly.
Cassie snapped back to reality, wondering why she kept thinking about Joseph. ""I mean, going into a big family like the Chapmans is like walking into a lion's den.""
David gave a small smile. ""Don't worry. In a few days, I'll come to New York to be with you. You won't be alone anymore. Actually, I've been laying the groundwork for my move to New York since last year. I’ve even bought land and started expanding my factory in the new economic zone they developed there a couple of years ago.""
Cassie was astounded by his foresight. ""I didn't realize you were so visionary.""
""The best vision I ever had was falling for you,"" David teased, pinching her nose lightly.
Cassie stiffened. Joseph used to do the same, but David's touch made her feel off and slightly resistant.
""It's getting late. I should head back to my room,"" she said with a faint smile. ""You should take your medicine and get some rest.""
As she turned to leave, she realized he hadn't let go of her hand.
She looked back to meet David's deep, tender eyes. ""Cassie, can't you stay tonight? Don't worry, I won't touch you. My injury hasn’t healed yet.""
""I'm sorry, David. I just got out of a relationship. Give me some time, I'm still adjusting,"" Cassie instinctively refused.
The thought of sharing a bed with David after just getting engaged was too much for her.
David's expression dimmed, and he managed a wry smile. ""Alright.""
---
Three days later.
Cassie and Leo headed to Madison Airport.
David drove them. ""Cassie, wait for me. As soon as I'm healed, I’ll come for you.""
""Sure, we'll keep in touch by phone.""
After waving goodbye, Cassie boarded the plane with Leo.
Leo had kept an eye on David during the trip, finding him vaguely familiar, but then again, not quite memorable.
Leo lamented how quickly his daughter had gotten engaged; David was young and promising, but compared to the Chapman legacy, he was still not quite their equal. ""Did he really lose a kidney trying to save you?""
""Yes, without him, I might not be here."" Cassie whispered back, ""Please, no matchmaking in New York, Dad. I'm not interested.""
Leo laughed heartily at that but then sighed.
""I won't meddle with your marriage. I was forced to marry someone I didn't want to by my parents. Decades of regret. Your happiness is all that matters. David’s just a step away. No worries, I can give him a leg up. He's capable, and with my help, his achievements could rival those of New York's elite.""
