Chapter 125

"As soon as Laura Miller saw Joseph Hernandez enter the hospital room, she stood up quickly. ""I'll step out to the lobby to get some snacks for Cassie,"" she said.

""There's no need,"" Joseph Hernandez interjected in a cold tone ""The food from the lobby café is unsanitary. I've arranged for a meal delivery from a five-star hotel.""

Laura Miller was left speechless.

Wow, even a hospital stay includes five-star service here – that's living the dream.

Laura caught Cassie's eye from her hospital bed and quickly left the room.

And Cassie was just as shocked, never having imagined Joseph Hernandez would treat her so well. Was she seeing things, or was there actually a hint of tenderness in his eyes?

"" something simple would have sufficed,"" Cassie said quietly, her voice heavy with unease.

""Simple?"" Joseph's laughter was deep, but his expression remained unyielding. ""Didn't you look at your medical report?""

Cassie looked confused; she hadn't looked at it.

""Fool,"" Joseph retorted. ""Can't you feel your own health failing? The doctor warned that if you're not careful, you could risk permanent infertility.""

Cassie was truly frightened now.

She had been reckless in the invincibility of youth, but now, reflecting on recent symptoms, she realized her menstrual cycles were irregular and lighter than usual.

""Let me be clear,"" Joseph narrowed his eyes. ""I have no interest in a woman who can’t have children. If you want to stay with me, you need to take better care of yourself.""

Cassie retorted with a pout, "" Of course I can't just have children on command; I'm not a machine.""

""You dare to talk back?"" Joseph stepped closer, his eyes narrow with warning.

Cassie pulled back into the comforter, wincing as the movement aggravated her wounds.

Joseph misinterpreted her reaction as fear, feeling a fleeting mix of pity and resignation. He wasn't heartless.

""Get up and sign this."" He threw a document onto her blanket. Cassie's eyes widened at the title ""Living Together Agreement.""

Gritting her teeth, she skimmed the document: living together meant she was responsible for cooking, cleaning, caring for the cat, and attending to him – and...

She had to be home by nine every evening, and she was not allowed to dine or meet alone with other men.

What kind of agreement was this?

Joseph saw her stunned expression and mistook it for excitement. A hint of a smile crossed his face before he suppressed it with a cough, clenching his fist. ""Don't read too much into it. The last part is contingent on your behavior. Otherwise, forget about sharing my bed. And stop resorting to those sly tactics; I despise them. Do you understand?""

""No, no, no, she didn't understand.
Cassie was utterly confused.

Who was treating her with such contempt?

With a haughty lift of his chin, Joseph Hernandez declared, “Sign this agreement, and I'll resolve the hotel incident for you. Additionally, I assure you that the true mastermind will be exposed.”

“You're referring to Alexander?”

“Yes.”

Joseph Hernandez stretched out casually as he sat on the edge of the hospital bed.

“The Andersons have already filed a lawsuit against you. You'll likely face a trial next week. Right now, no one in Madison would dare represent you, except for me. I've reviewed the Andersons' legal team; they've hired some of the best lawyers in the business. You could be facing a sentence of over twenty years.”

Cassie trembled as Joseph's lips curled into a slight smile, ""But I doubt you'd survive a year in prison. It's obvious someone's targeting you.”

“Did someone arrange for the inmates to attack me yesterday?” Suddenly, Cassie asked with a sharp look in her eyes."
