Chapter 564

Her worry was palpable, a heavy cloud that hung over her.

With her head bowed, Cassie tenderly caressed her belly, her eyes welling up with a profound bitterness. She silently questioned, "My babies, how can I shield you from this?"

"Nathaniel," she began, her voice barely above a whisper, "Can you find a proficient psychologist? We must keep Lucas in the dark. I need to understand more about Joseph's condition."

"Of course," Nathaniel responded, a sigh of relief escaping his lips. He was grateful that Cassie hadn't surrendered to despair.

As the right-hand man to the wealthiest individual in Madison, Nathaniel had a vast network at his disposal. He promptly located a retired doctor in Madison, renowned for his extensive research in psychological studies.

That very afternoon, Nathaniel accompanied Cassie to meet with Dr. Cheng.

Upon hearing of Joseph's transformation, the doctor adjusted his reading glasses and began, "I once had a discourse with leading psychologists from Country Y. They spoke of an ancient hypnosis technique from their country, capable of manipulating emotions and memories. Your friend's symptoms bear a striking resemblance to that."

Cassie's body trembled as she urgently asked, "Is there a cure?"

The doctor offered a bitter smile. "This hypnosis technique is ancient. My colleagues in Country Y have merely heard of it; it's virtually obsolete in modern psychology. Furthermore, it's rumored that only a handful of people possess the knowledge to perform it, and they seldom dare to, given the high risk of failure. In the past, eight out of ten attempts resulted in the subject becoming mentally incapacitated. That's why it gradually faded into obscurity."

Both Cassie and Nathaniel were left in stunned silence.

They hadn't anticipated Megan's cruelty, resorting to this forbidden hypnosis technique on Joseph, the man she professed to love.

Miraculously, Joseph was one of the two in ten who hadn't been reduced to a state of idiocy.

"Is there truly no hope?" Cassie asked, her voice laced with desperation.

"Doctor, please reconsider," Nathaniel pleaded anxiously. "Despite your retirement, you remain the most experienced psychologist in Madison."

The doctor sighed heavily. "I'm certain I can't help him. Even if there are doctors who can, they are exceedingly rare. If you do manage to find one, I would advise against seeking treatment. The healing process is fraught with danger, with only a 10% chance of success. That's why there are no known success stories. Those who undergo treatment are likely left mentally impaired."

A heavy silence descended upon the room, lasting a full minute.

Cassie's voice, hoarse and strained, broke the silence. "So, the best course of action is to let him continue in this state?"

"That's the long and short of it," the doctor replied, taking a sip of his hot tea.

"And what of the side effects?" Nathaniel asked, his tone laced with urgency.

"Other than having her emotions controlled by another, it's not too detrimental, akin to living in a dream," the doctor offered a sympathetic glance towards Cassie. "It's just that the person who used to love him is the one truly suffering."

Cassie scoffed at his words.

Suffering was an understatement; it was a living nightmare.

"Thank you, doctor," Cassie murmured, rising to her feet and exiting the doctor's home in a daze.

Nathaniel hurried after her, concern etched on his face. "Madam."

"Don't call me Madam. I may not be one much longer," Cassie responded, her gaze lost in the bustling traffic.

A once blissful marriage, now marred by inexplicable circumstances. She was at a loss, unable to comprehend what she had done to deserve such a fate.
