Chapter 525
Joseph remained by Cassie's side until the morning sun graced the sky. He watched as she rose from the comfort of their shared bed, and he stayed until she had finished her breakfast. Only then did he leave the mansion to attend to his work.
Rosalind, observing Cassie's improved complexion, couldn't resist teasing her. "It seems you still require Joseph's company," she said, a playful smile on her lips.
Cassie's cheeks flushed a rosy hue, and she bit her lip in vexation. Despite her resentment towards Joseph for the harm he had inflicted upon Nina and Laura, she found herself craving his care during her pregnancy.
As the evening descended, Joseph's voice echoed from the other end of the phone, "I have to work late tonight and won't be able to return for dinner. I have another commitment, and I'm uncertain of when I'll be finished. I'll be staying at the house downtown."
"Okay," Cassie responded, her voice barely a whisper. After ending the call, her mind wandered to Liam's advice. She sighed regretfully. How could she have taken Liam's words to heart? Joyce was no longer alive, unless Joseph had once again stumbled upon someone who bore a striking resemblance to Megan.
As the clock struck eight in the evening, Cassie was preparing to step into the shower when her phone chimed, indicating a new message. A photo had been sent from an unknown New York number.
She opened the message and was greeted by an image of Joseph and a woman, clad in a linen dress, strolling through a hotel room. The woman's shawl was casually draped over her shoulder, and her long, wavy hair cascaded naturally down her back. They appeared to be a couple straight out of a romantic painting.
However, what stunned Cassie was the woman's uncanny resemblance to the woman in the photograph David had previously shown her. Joyce's features, while similar, were not as alluring as this woman's, who bore an uncanny resemblance to Megan.
The woman in the photo was the spitting image of Megan. Even Joseph's gaze upon her was filled with tenderness. Cassie checked the timestamp on the photo-- nine o'clock a.m. the previous day.
While she had been en route to the court, Joseph had been with this woman in the hotel. Who was she? A cold chill crept up from the soles of Cassie's feet, colder than when she had discovered Joyce's resemblance to Megan. Joyce had never incited such a terrifying sense of dread within her.
The phone rang again from the same unknown number. She promptly answered the call, and Luna's gleeful laughter echoed from the other end. "My dear sister, have you seen the photos? Aren't they beautiful?"
"...Not really," Cassie managed to respond, forcing herself to maintain a calm facade despite the panic that was threatening to consume her.
Luna's laughter rang out once more. "Well, you might not know. But the woman in the photo is Megan. She isn't dead."
"What are you talking about?" Cassie frowned. How could Megan still be alive? Hadn't her death been confirmed?
"I'm not lying. I've seen Megan before, and I’m certain that the woman in the photo is her. She returned a few days ago. Now, Joseph, Michael, and Lucas are with her every day, treating her like a precious child," Luna continued, her voice filled with a sense of triumph. “By the way, I saw her and Joseph emerge from a hotel suite yesterday morning. Can you imagine what they might have been doing the night before?"
Cassie's hand trembled as she clutched the phone. The thought of Joseph lying in bed with another woman was a blow that left her reeling.
"I suppose you must be feeling a great deal of pain and fear right now," Luna's smug chuckle resonated through the phone. "I feel sorry for you. Despite your pregnancy, Joseph has reconciled with his former lover. But, considering you're my sister, I thought it was only right to bring this news to you. There's no need to thank me."
