Chapter 1493 So You Like Pigs
Laura's face twitched just a bit, almost like she was trying to hide it. "He's not my husband."
"Oh, then he must be your boyfriend," the guide said, clapping one of her hands to her mouth at the realization of the mistake she had just made.
Laura stayed quiet.
She was stunned. How could anyone think she and Derek were a thing?
Laura explained briefly, "He's my brother."
"Sorry," the guide said, her face turning red. She only knew the person being photographed today was important because her boss had told her so, but she didn't know who it was.
"Because he looks about your age and is really good with the baby. I've been doing this for a while, and it's rare to see a dad more patient than us guides. He must be married. Whoever marries him is super lucky," the guide tried to explain.
Laura smiled. "He's not married yet."
"Really?" The guide felt even more awkward. "Well, I guess I messed up again."
"You weren't totally wrong. He is very patient. His future wife and kids will definitely be very happy."
With that, Laura looked at Derek.
Maeve was clearly getting cranky, so Derek had to come up with more tricks to keep her entertained.
Even just watching, Laura could tell Derek would be wiped out after the shoot.
The shoot didn't wrap up until 3 PM.
After it was over, Maeve fell asleep in Derek's arms, looking super comfy.
Thea wanted to take Maeve, but Maeve was too fussy. It was like she could sense Derek's warmth and would cry if he was replaced.
"Let's wait a bit longer. She might not be in deep sleep yet. Besides, I don't have work today." Derek just carried Maeve to the car.
Laura, with Thea's slow help, sat beside him. "Let's head straight to Whispering Pines Manor. James called me earlier, telling us to get there soon."
Derek nodded.
Laura glanced at him. "Thanks for today."
"You owe me another meal," Derek said, a playful glint in his eyes.
"Okay. Once I'm better, I'll treat you every day," Laura said without thinking.
"What if you lie to me?" Derek asked.
"Then I'll turn into a pig." Laura quickly made a swearing gesture.
Derek frowned. "What's wrong with pigs? They're cute, all chubby."
"So, you like pigs," Laura said, surprised.
"What I mean is, if the person I like becomes chubby in the future, I wouldn't mind. I'd still find her adorable," Derek said, looking at her meaningfully.
Laura got it. "You mean you like chubby girls. Got it. Next time I'll tell Godmother to introduce you to some curvier girls."
Derek was speechless for a moment, then laughed softly.
What he meant was that if she kept eating like this, she'd eventually become chubby, but he wouldn't mind. He liked her in any size.
However, Laura seemed to be slow on the uptake. He'd take it slow.
He didn't want to scare her off.
"Why are you laughing?" Laura asked, puzzled.
"Nothing," Derek said, yawning.
Seeing this, Laura quickly added, "You should rest. You must be wiped out today. Just watching the photo shoot was exhausting. Maybe we should just use a phone to take pictures of Maeve in the future. Professional shoots are tiring for both kids and adults."
"That's not entirely true. Spending time with kids is tiring but joyful. Professional shoots just require more effort, but when Maeve grows up, she'll be happy looking at these photos."
Derek said gently, "I have a five-year-old nephew who loves looking at the baby photos his mom took. My cousin made albums of his everyday photos and a few professional shoots. My nephew often takes them out to look at and share with me whenever I visit. He laughs every time, so happy."
"Really?" Laura was surprised but then thought of Sophia and Oliver. Oliver didn't like taking photos, but Sophia would insist on Cassie taking pictures even during a park visit.
"Yes, Maeve is so cute and pretty. We should take lots of photos and make many albums for her."
Derek looked down at Maeve's sleeping face and smiled.
Laura stared at his profile, lost in thought.
No wonder the guide thought Derek was married. He was so patient, gentle, and loving with children.
They had been spending time together from morning till night, and he even put Maeve to sleep at night.
His patience with Maeve might even surpass Laura's.
The journey to their destination was a bit long. After they stopped chatting, Derek fell asleep against the seat.
Maeve lay in his arms, both sleeping soundly. Even in his sleep, Derek's arm was instinctively curved, as if afraid Maeve would fall.
Thea reached out, trying to take Maeve.
But even in his sleep, Derek instinctively blocked her and adjusted his position to hold Maeve tighter.
Maeve's sweet sleeping face snuggled closer to his sweater.
Laura was moved and took out her phone to snap a picture of them.
When they arrived at Whispering Pines Manor, the car stopped, and Derek woke up.
Caroline came over, smiling, and immediately took Maeve.
Maeve was in a deep sleep and didn't wake up.
Soon, Eric and some relatives from the Jude Family gathered around.
"Maeve has grown so much," Aaron said, leaning in. "She used to look like a little mouse, but now she's all chubby, like a little pig."
"Maeve is so cute." Caroline smiled at Laura. "Laura, don't stand outside. Come in."
Laura followed them inside.
Coming here again, Laura felt different now that she was divorced. She felt like a guest, even though she still had a room upstairs.
Caroline didn't throw a big party, just invited a few relatives for a meal. But there were enough relatives to fill two tables.
The relatives greeted Laura as usual, but no one mentioned Michael.
