Chapter 531

Joseph's face tightened in anger as he demanded, "What exactly are you implying, Liam?"

Liam shrugged nonchalantly, his voice laced with mockery. "Did I say something wrong, Joseph? You and your former flame spent the night in a bar, supposedly treating an illness. It's the first time I've heard of such an unconventional method of treatment."

Joseph's patience was wearing thin. "Why are you so fixated on this? Every doctor has their own unique approach to treatment."

Liam held up his hands in surrender. "Alright, perhaps you're completely innocent. But can you be certain that Megan harbors no feelings for you?" He paused, his gaze steady. "I'll admit, I'm far from perfect. But I can assure you, if my wife were to bear a child, I would keep my distance from other women, especially an ex-lover. I'm saying this because I don't want my future nephews or nieces to be born into a broken family. You, of all people, should understand the pain that comes with that."

Joseph's expression shifted, his eyes darkening.

Cassie watched Liam with newfound respect. She had once held a grudge against him, but in that moment, it had all but evaporated.

Joseph scoffed, "My son has nothing to do with you."

Liam retorted, "Whether he does or not isn't your call to make. That decision lies with my nephew and niece." The tension between Liam and Joseph was palpable.

Cassie found the entire scene amusing.

Liam turned to her, "What's so funny?"

Cassie couldn't help but laugh. "It's just rare to see you two engaging in such a heated discussion. It's quite entertaining." She paused, her voice softening. "You two could learn to accept each other as brothers. There's no need for this constant rivalry. You could support and help each other."

Liam was quick to dismiss the idea. "No chance. I have no intention of supporting him."

Joseph echoed his sentiment, "And I have no desire to help him."

Cassie was at a loss for words. How could they not see the similarities between them? They were like brothers.

After sharing a meal, the trio returned to their mansion.

As Cassie stepped into the bedroom, Joseph's phone rang. It was Michael. "Joseph, what were you thinking? Megan was there for you during your illness. The least you could do was ensure she got home safely. Instead, you left her alone, and she was robbed on her way back. Now she's injured."

Joseph's brows furrowed in surprise. "She didn't drive herself?"

Michael's voice was strained with frustration. "She just returned to Madison and hasn’t bought a car yet." He sighed, "Megan was soaked when she arrived. When we asked her what happened, she refused to say anything."

Joseph pursed his lips, his patience wearing thin. "Take care of her."

As he ended the call, Cassie glanced at him, her voice filled with concern. "What's wrong? Did something happen to Megan?"

Joseph's eyes flickered with surprise. "You heard that?" He had kept the volume on his phone as low as possible. How could she have heard?

Cassie hadn't heard a thing. But she knew Megan well enough to guess her next move. This woman was anything but simple.

A chuckle escaped Cassie's lips. "Not only did I guess that something had happened to her, but I also knew that the call was from Michael. He must be blaming you for not ensuring Megan got home safely and wondering why she was soaked. But Megan will certainly not reveal the truth."

Joseph was taken aback, almost suspecting that Cassie had bugged his phone.

"How did you know?" he asked, his voice filled with disbelief.

Cassie smirked, "They’re all tactics that Olivia used before."

Joseph's brow furrowed at the mention of the name.

Cassie shrugged nonchalantly. "Firstly, if something happened to Megan, it would intensify your guilt. Secondly, Megan not telling Michael that I doused her with water would make you think she's understanding. These are all strategies women often use to advance by retreating."

Joseph rubbed his temples, clearly exasperated. " Cassie, I know you don't like Megan, but you don't know her well."

Cassie nodded, her voice steady. "I understand, she's kind-hearted. You might have known her for over a decade, but I only met her tonight. It's not pleasant for me to discredit your unforgettable first love." She paused, her voice hardening. “But I'm sorry. In my eyes, Megan is a woman who might potentially steal my husband and destroy my family."
