Chapter 1698 Disliking Owing Favors

"Isadora."

Suddenly, someone in the secretary's office shouted in fear.

Everyone turned around and saw Isadora standing at the door with a cane, her face pale.

"Does Mr. Miller have a girlfriend?" Isadora asked with difficulty.

She couldn't believe it. She had only taken a few days off, and there was already a woman by Elliott's side?

"No, we were just talking nonsense," the chief secretary quickly shook her head. "Isadora, aren't you supposed to be resting at home?"

Isadora originally just wanted to find Elliott for something.

Hearing everyone's words, she had other thoughts in her mind, "Mr. Miller gave me a few days off, but I've been idle at home with nothing to do, so I decided to come back to work. I can still do some clerical work."

Everyone looked at the cast on her foot, not knowing what to say.

"You should ask Mr. Miller about that," the secretary said with an awkward smile, feeling a bit speechless. She was so injured, yet she didn't rest at home and came out to work. If something happened, given the Penrose family's temperament, if Elliott had to compensate with another store, what would they do?

Even if Elliott had money, he couldn't be tossed around like that.

Isadora nodded and hobbled to Elliott's office with her cane.

"Come in."

Elliott's cold voice came through.

Isadora took a deep breath, opened the door, and limped in.

Elliott looked up, and when he saw who came in, a brief look of surprise flashed in his deep black eyes. He got up and placed a chair in front of Isadora.

"Thank you." Isadora nervously glanced at Elliott's handsome face. She hated her parents.

If it weren't for their presumptuous decisions, she and Elliott would be discussing marriage by now.

She wouldn't be in this situation.

"Feeling better?"

Elliott asked casually.

This question stumped Isadora. Should she say yes or no? If she said she was better, it would seem like her injury wasn't serious. If she said no, what if Elliott didn't let her come to the company?

After thinking for a moment, Isadora didn't answer the question. "Mr. Miller, I came for this."

Isadora handed over the file folder in her hand. "This is too valuable; I can't accept it. I didn't know about the store's compensation before; it was my mom's decision. I even argued with my parents at home these past few days. If I accept this, what will others think of me? I saved you myself; my parents have no right to decide for me."

She knew very well that if she accepted this, she and Elliott would have no chance at all.

Elliott looked down at the document, a transfer contract. "Just like your mom said, if you hadn't saved me that day, I might not be alive. My life is worth these two stores. Take it; let's call it even. I don't like owing people."

He was very straightforward.

Isadora's face turned slightly pale. She bit her lip. "My mom exaggerated. Even if I hadn't saved you that day, it's unlikely you would have died. Anyway, I have a clear conscience. I acted on instinct that day. I don't want people saying I saved you for a big reward, or even saying that if they had known saving you would cost so much, they wouldn't have done it."

She looked up, her eyes stubbornly red. "If that reputation spreads, how will I get married? Who would dare to marry me? People would avoid me."

Elliott frowned.

His assistant and Rose had said similar things.

But he also knew that if he took back the stores, it would mean he would always owe Isadora this favor.

"Anything that can be solved with money is not a problem for me."

At this point, Elliott didn't want to beat around the bush. "From your perspective, Isadora, maybe your concerns are valid. But have you thought about it from my perspective? If I take back the stores or compensate you as a regular work injury, your family will be wealthy in Whisperlyn City. According to your parents, you are their treasure, very valuable. A broken leg and some scars are not enough compensation."

Isadora's lips trembled. "My dad..."

"Listen to me," Elliott raised his hand to interrupt her. "That's why I agreed to marry you before. It doesn't matter who I marry. You've worked with me for so long; I know your abilities. Frankly, I neither like nor dislike you. But when the Miller Group's troubles became public, what did your parents do? My dad called your dad to ask if he had any connections in Austin, and your dad avoided him. Later, he didn't even answer the phone."

Isadora's cheeks turned red with shame. She hadn't expected Elliott to be so blunt. "You misunderstood. My dad was busy during that time. He was trying to find a way. He didn't answer because he has a private phone and a business phone."

She didn't know that if she had admitted it frankly, Elliott might have admired her a bit.

But she chose to cover for her father, making Elliott feel like she was treating him like a fool.

The Penrose family didn't intentionally avoid them, but coincidentally, after the Miller family resolved the crisis, Yosef Thalia came to apologize to the Miller family.

But Elliott didn't care to argue with her.

If it weren't for wanting to end things completely, he wouldn't have said so much to Isadora.

"Let's talk about your mom."

Elliott said calmly, "That day, I called you, and your mom answered. When I mentioned canceling the engagement, she agreed very quickly. Isadora, if the Miller Group hadn't had any issues, would your parents have agreed to cancel the engagement?"

His question was too sharp, and Isadora's face turned red. "That day..."

"Isadora, you are an excellent girl, but marriage is not just about two people; it's about two families."

Elliott said directly, "When I first came to Whisperlyn City, your parents wouldn't even look at me. Honestly, if it weren't for my sister dating Derek and the Miller Group's progress, your parents wouldn't have agreed to our engagement. No business is always smooth sailing. Today, the Miller Group overcame this hurdle; tomorrow, there might be a new crisis. I, Elliott, might one day have nothing. But my only standard for a future wife is that even if I have nothing, she will be by my side."

Isadora said with difficulty, "Mr. Miller, actually, the first time I saw you, I liked you. At that time, the Miller Group hadn't established itself in Whisperlyn City. My parents are my parents; I am me."

"Sorry, I don't want my future partner to be someone I can't fully trust because of her parents. Besides, your parents are not simple people."
