Chapter 1234 He Said She Was Cute
Cassie sighed, "Look, you're already knocked up with his baby, and you guys are hitched. If he's really sorry, can't you cut him some slack?"
Laura rolled her eyes, "With that sharp tongue of his, if I stick around, I'll probably die young from all the stress."
Cassie chuckled, "Wouldn't that be a win-win? He might kick the bucket early too from all your sass. You two can go out together."
Laura huffed, "Cassie!"
"Alright, alright, chill. From my marriage to Joseph, to our split, to having a kid, I didn't even get a whiff of chicken soup. Not even a feather," Cassie grumbled, "He said he'd cook for me when he had time after we made up, but guess what? No time. They're all full of it."
Laura snickered.
"Okay, I'm done chatting. Gotta see if Michael got the chicken. If there's no soup, he's dead meat." Laura hung up.
Lucky for her, Michael was on it, making chicken soup.
Laura felt a bit mushy and snapped a pic to brag to Cassie.
A few minutes later, Cassie sent back a "breaking up" meme.
Laura chuckled.
Soon after, Cassie texted: [I'm so jealous of you guys. Joseph and I haven't had a chill meal in ages. Sometimes I don't even wanna cook.]
Laura felt a pang of guilt. Compared to the stress Cassie and Joseph were under, she and Michael had it easy.
They had the Jude family backing them, no worries.
She should be more grateful.
She decided to be a bit nicer to Michael from now on.
At noon, Michael brought out a big bowl of golden chicken soup. It had been simmering for over an hour, and it smelled heavenly.
Laura's stomach growled at the aroma.
"My bad about this morning at the hospital." Michael surprised her by apologizing. "I shouldn't have said you were getting chubby. Didn't mean to hurt you. Honestly, I think a bit of weight is cute."
He quickly turned away, his ears turning red.
It was the first time he'd said something so cheesy to Laura, and it felt awkward.
Laura was stunned.
She was used to bickering with Michael all the time, and now he was calling her cute.
It was weird, but it made her happy.
After all, who doesn't like a compliment, especially a pregnant woman who's starting to gain weight?
"I've always been cute." Laura grabbed a spoon, looking smug. "I used to be too gorgeous, and my beauty overshadowed my cuteness. Now that my beauty's dialed down a bit, my cuteness is off the charts."
Michael was glad he hadn't taken a sip of the soup, or he would've totally choked.
"If you've got any objections, spit 'em out," Laura said with a grin.
"Nope, no objections." Michael instinctively pulled his feet back, remembering the last time she stepped on them.
Laura nodded, satisfied. She was in such a good mood, she downed two bowls of soup.
The next night.
Golden Leaf International Hotel.
A low-key but super fancy banquet was going down in the top-floor hall.
The parking lot was packed with luxury rides.
Even though the Jude Group was hosting, everyone knew Carl was the real boss. Only the elite got invites to this shindig.
Since Laura was pregnant, the Jude family didn't make her play hostess. Michael was her plus-one, and they rolled in around 7:30.
Not long after, Joseph and Cassie showed up.
Joseph was rocking a custom black and gray suit with a matching vest and shirt. One hand in his pocket, the other holding Cassie's arm.
As they walked in, they turned heads left and right.
Laura glanced at Joseph's tall frame, then at Michael in his light green suit, and sighed.
"What's with the sigh?" Michael felt a bit miffed. "Do I look worse than Joseph?"
"It's not that," Laura said earnestly, "Joseph looks like one of those hot, bossy CEOs from a romance novel, and you're just... a pretty face."
Michael was so mad he laughed. Seeing Joseph strut over all cool, he found him even more annoying.
When Joseph got closer, he noticed Michael's hostile stare. "Did I piss you off?"
Michael gave him a once-over, unimpressed. "Why do you always wear such dark, boring colors? It's so dull."
Joseph didn't get mad. He just gave him a cold look and shot back, "It'd be a problem if you were into me, 'cause I don't swing that way."
Laura burst out laughing, and Cassie smiled too. "Mr. Jude, don't bother arguing with him. He's always got a sharp tongue."
"Sharp? I'm always sweet to you," Joseph said, looking at Cassie with puppy-dog eyes.
Cassie rolled her eyes. "Yeah, right. You used to give me a hard time."
"Alright, enough with the love fest," Michael said, nodding towards the entrance, "Lucas is here."
Everyone turned to look. Joseph and Cassie had puzzled expressions. Lucas had a killer body, tall and handsome, in a maroon suit, but why the mask?
"Let me tell you, Bernice bit Lucas's mouth," Michael said, winking.
Joseph raised an eyebrow, but Cassie frowned and said after a moment, "Serves him right."
"Don't be like that. Lucas decided not to marry Sarah," Michael said, sticking up for Lucas.
Cassie was surprised but pleased. "Can Sarah handle that?"
