Chapter 188

"Cassie nodded weakly.

""This is a document your grandfather entrusted to me,"" Carter Harrison said, producing a file. ""He foresaw trouble with Robert. He hoped to avoid this, but Peace Group's success isn't due to Robert. He just lucked out in raising you and then claiming thirty percent of the shares.""
“Exactly, the shares would be his once grandma was gone, but he wouldn't wait, even if it meant killing her,” Cassie clenched the document. “With this, him dreaming of the chairman’s seat next month, it's not happening.”

“Don’t worry, with my help, the chairman's seat is yours,” Carter Harrison smiled.

""Thank you, Mr. Harrison,"" Cassie spoke with choked gratitude, “You were always with my mom; did you ever meet my dad?”

Carter's face darkened, and after a long pause, he said, ""I did, and don't take it too hard. He didn't know you existed.""

Suddenly, things clicked for Cassie, and a sense of relief washed over her. ""That's good. It means I wasn't abandoned by my parents after all.""

“Actually, Peace Group wouldn’t be where it is without his support from the shadows. Things wouldn’t have gone so smoothly otherwise... but he's settled down now.” Carter looked at her with sympathy.

Cassie understood. “It’s normal, after more than twenty years, nobody waits in the same place.”

Carter Harrison's face was etched with bitterness, “Robert’s been courting the company’s executives and shareholders lately. You’ve got to be very careful.”

“I will. I'll take back what's mine.""
That afternoon, Cassie had turned down Carter Harrison's plea to stay and boarded a flight back home to Madison. After touching down, she switched on her phone only to find it void of any messages from Joseph. A touch of bitter confusion lingered in her mind about his sudden silence.

She sent a quick text his way: ""Where are you?""

Receiving no reply after a long while, she decided to text Laura Miller and they agreed to meet for dinner.

""Congrats, big shot CEO of the Peace Group! A billionaire now, huh? I'll be hanging onto your coattails for sure,"" Laura chuckled with a hint of mischief in her eyes as they met. ""Imagine Sarah Randall’s face if she found out you've turned the tables. Think it would just kill her?""

""Let's just drop it. She's always been a flip-flopper,"" Cassie dismissively shook her head.

""Though I heard..."" Laura lowered her voice, ""she's someone's mistress now. Some big shot from New York, gaining ground fast.""

Cassie frowned. ""She's in showbiz; we hardly cross paths.""
At the moment, Cassie was more preoccupied with the issues surrounding the Roberts family. In the midst of dinner, her phone buzzed. It was a message from Noah on WhatsApp: ""Done eating? Wanna come out to PenG for karaoke tonight? Joseph's here. Bring your friend along.""

Cassie's heart skipped a beat at the mention of Joseph's name. Showing Laura the text, she asked, ""Should we go?""
""Of course,"" said Laura, playfully stirring her milkshake. ""Weren't you just complaining about Joseph giving you the cold shoulder? Don't you want to see him?""

""Hmph, better off without him,"" Cassie smirked. ""I've been free of him lately.""

But soon after, Cassie's mood soured again. ""Maybe he's just playing games. Been all nice to me and now suddenly out all the time. For all I know, he's probably with some other woman.""

""Oh, the jealousy is strong with this one,"" Laura teased.

""I'm not jealous, just annoyed at his attitude,"" Cassie insisted, then recalled something. ""You drove here, right? We're planning to drink. Maybe you should call Benjamin for a ride.""
""Let me check with him.""

Laura called Benjamin, who replied with a resigned tone, ""Can't make it. Buried under a pile of reports here. Just get a ride-share; I’ll send you the money.""

Shortly after, Laura received the money transfer. Under the circumstances, she felt no annoyance.."
