Chapter 612
Joseph's fury flared like a wildfire at the mention of Megan's name. "That damned woman! Did I not entrust you with Megan's safety?" he demanded, his voice echoing with rage.
Athena responded, her voice heavy with remorse, "I attempted to protect her, but Cassie attacked without warning. I was unable to react in time. Later, when Cassie tried to harm Megan again, I fought back. However, I was no match for her. Cassie's power has grown considerably."
Joseph was taken aback. Athena, while not the most formidable warrior within the Dragon organization, was nonetheless a formidable force in Madison. He had not anticipated that Cassie would be capable of defeating her. What could have possibly transpired over the past few years to bring about such a transformation?
Athena continued, her voice steady, " Cassie believes that you intend to seize control of her company."
Joseph scoffed at the notion. "Me, take over?" he sneered, "She clearly underestimates me. The Peace Group is a mere trifle, hardly worth my interest."
"Megan expressed similar sentiments," Athena added, "but Cassie remains unconvinced. She plans to convene a shareholders' meeting and expel both you and Megan."
Joseph's anger reached a boiling point. " Cassie is overestimating her capabilities," he seethed. "Make sure Megan is taken to the hospital for a scalp examination."
"I will," Athena promised, her voice barely above a whisper. "However, I must confess that I made this call without Megan's knowledge. She requested that I keep this from you. Megan feels a deep sense of guilt over the events of three years ago. She believes that Cassie has also suffered."
Joseph's voice softened, tinged with a hint of tenderness. "Megan is too kind-hearted," he murmured, a pang of guilt washing over him for having doubted Megan's honesty about Cassie's depression the previous night.
"Nevertheless," Athena continued, "Megan has been in a state of unrest since her encounter with Cassie. It appears that Cassie informed her that, despite her return, she and Joseph remain a couple. Cassie then proceeded to publicly humiliate Megan by calling her a mistress."
"I will speak with Megan later," Joseph decided, his fury at Cassie's audacity simmering beneath the surface.
After ending the call, Athena turned her gaze to Megan. "You did well," she said, her voice filled with admiration. Megan took her hand, her voice bitter as she responded, "Athena, I am forever grateful for your unwavering support."
"Megan, there's no need for thanks," Athena replied hastily, her gratitude evident. "I made a grave error in the past. If not for your intervention, I would have been expelled from Dragon by Joseph long ago. I owe my current position to you. I am not like that fool, Joe, who sympathizes with Cassie simply because she protected him for a brief period. She is nothing more than an interloper. When you and Joseph were in love, Cassie was a nonentity. She merely seized an opportunity when you were absent. It's a grave injustice to you."
Megan's face contorted with pain. "Don't say that. I am to blame for everything that transpired," she confessed. "If not for Cassie's persistence, I doubt I would have had the opportunity to marry Joseph in this lifetime."
Athena responded with determination, her teeth gritted, "Don't say that. You will certainly have that opportunity. I will ensure it."
Megan nodded, her phone ringing just then. It was Joseph. She quickly rubbed her nose, altering her voice to sound weak and nasal before answering, "Joseph..."
Joseph immediately sensed something was amiss. "What's wrong with your voice?" he asked, concern lacing his words.
"My voice is fine. I think my throat is just a bit uncomfortable," Megan replied, forcing a smile.
Joseph's suspicion was piqued. "I see. Cassie came to harass you, didn't she?" he asked. The more Megan attempted to hide it, the more Joseph perceived Cassie as an uncouth shrew. He was astounded that he had been taken in by such a woman at the hospital earlier. He had truly been blind.
"Don't say that. I understand. Megan has always despised me, so she must be infuriated to see me as the president of the Peace Group."
"Enough," Joseph cut her off. "You have dedicated yourself wholeheartedly to the Peace Group for the past two years, and I have witnessed it. I will deal with her."
"Joseph," Megan's voice wavered, "she claimed that you two are still a couple. Is it true? Can I still marry you?"
"You can," Joseph reassured her. "I made a promise to marry you, and I fully intend to keep it."
After ending the call, Joseph rubbed his temples in frustration. He had not previously considered this issue. Since he was not the one who had claimed Cassie's body, he had not verified her death certificate. He had assumed that Laura had already annulled it.
It appeared that he and Cassie might still be legally married. "Find out where Cassie is," Joseph instructed Nathaniel.
