Chapter 185

"Cassie collapsed into a chair, shocked by the revelation.

Could Robert have orchestrated his own mother's death to recover and claim his share of the Peace Group after Height Company's downfall? ""No, it can't be. She was his biological mother, after all.""

""No, it can't be. She was his biological mother, after all.""

David sighed, ""Robert has been powerful his entire life. You might not realize the extent to which a person would obliterate their humanity to maintain their wealth and status. Throughout history, there have been countless cases of family members within powerful dynasties turning on each other over inheritance. And with your grandmother being paralyzed, she must have seemed like nothing but a burden to him.""

Mrs. Parker nodded in agreement, ""Besides, I've always doubted that your grandmother's paralysis was an accident. The day Olivia Brooks came to Gardon Villa, your grandma fell from the upstairs shortly after Olivia went up. Olivia claimed it was an accidental fall, but your grandma was quite healthy. I don't believe it.""

Cassie's gaze sharpened as a chill ran through her.

How could someone be so vile as to hurt their own grandmother?

""I suspect Olivia found out about your connection with Peace Group and that you're not Robert's biological daughter,"" Mrs. Parker speculated.

""Mrs. Parker, you should have come to me with this information sooner,"" Cassie said, filled with self-reproach.
""I wish I could come out in the open, but the Brooks family has been sending people after me,"" he confessed, his voice tinged with apprehension. ""I suspect it's about the remaining thirty percent of the shares. Robert isn't one to give up easily, and maybe, he's even thinking about silencing me for good. That's why I've been laying low, staying out of sight.""

Mrs. Parker grasped her daughter Cassie's hand tightly. ""Seek out Carter Harrison, a shareholder of Peace Group. Your mother saved his life once, and he's got what you need.""

Cassie, puzzled, finally asked, ""Mrs. Parker, do you know who my father is?""

Shaking her head with a sigh, Mrs. Parker replied, ""I'm not sure, but he seems to be a New Yorker, from a position of some standing.""

Hope flickered in Cassie's eyes – perhaps there was still a chance to meet her biological father. But the question nagged at her: why had he abandoned her and her mother? Perhaps he had already moved on, gotten married, and had other children.

The two fell into silence in the hospital room until David suddenly suggested, ""For Mrs. Parker's safety, it might be best to transfer her to another hospital, away from the prying eyes of the Brooks family. I know the head of a private clinic; I can arrange it.""

""You're right, Mrs. Parker can't stay here,"" Cassie realized with a start.

The next few hours were spent moving Mrs. Parker to another hospital. However, Cassie failed to notice Ava—who was with her mother at the hospital—catching sight of her and David together as they ascended on the escalator. Ava immediately snapped a photo and gleefully messaged Joseph: ""Hey, isn't this your girlfriend? Did you guys break up? I saw her with another man.""

Ava chuckled to herself after sending the message. She had never liked that woman and now relished the opportunity that presented itself.

------------

As Joseph was about to leave work, his phone buzzedwith a new message. His face darkened instantly upon viewing it. It was clearly Cassie, pictured with David at the hospital. She had always professed her love for him, but when would she finally settle down for him? He called Cassie straight away: ""Where are you?""

""I'm at the hospital,"" Cassie hesitated, then chose to be honest.
His brows softened, just a bit – she hadn't lied. ""Who are you with?""

Glancing at David, who was talking with the attending physician, Cassie moved aside, a twinge of guilt in her voice, ""I'm with a doctor. Mrs. Parker, who used to care for my grandmother, just had surgery. She has no family, so I might be back late tonight.""

She was lying, with David at her side instead of calling him. It made him wonder – in her eyes, who was closer to her heart, him or David?
""Are you mad?"" Cassie spoke up nervously, breaking the unsettling silence, ""The caregiver won’t be here until nine, so I have to wait until then.”

""Fine.""
Joseph ended the call with that and pressed his fingers against his throbbing temples."
