Chapter 187

""Joe, what's going on? You invite people over, then send them away,"" Michael questioned. ""Quiet. I'm not in the mood to talk,"" Joseph muttered, lighting a cigarette. ""Come on, you're the one who called us,"" Michael said, sounding slightly hurt. ""Ever since Cassie came into your life, you've been unpredictable. If you're unhappy, why not just end it?"" “Say that again,” Joseph's cold gaze swept over.
Michael clammed up instantly.
Lucas tapped his cigarette, “You serious about her?”
“No way,” Michael frowned. “I thought Megan Ray was the only one for you...”
Joseph’s grip on his cigarette tightened, and Lucas sighed. “Michael, Megan Ray’s gone. Joe can't be expected to cling to the past forever.”
Michael took a swig of his drink, his mood darkening.
Joseph just smoked in silence.

The next two days.
Cassie had finally tracked down Carter Harrison’s address, though it turned out Harrison was a longtime resident of H-city. She had no choice but to take an early flight there.
When she arrived at the villa, the guard opened the gate and asked, “Do you have an appointment?”
“No, I don’t. But could you let Mr. Harrison know that Isabella’s daughter has come to visit?”
The guard looked over her with a hint of suspicion before making a call inside. Shortly after, he opened the gate with respect, “Mr. Harrison is waiting for you inside.”
Cassie walked through the gates.
She had expected Carter to be a man in his sixties or seventies, but when she saw the middle-aged man on the couch, she paused. This man couldn't be over forty, with some lines at the corners of his eyes, but there was a refined elegance about him, a clear sign he must have been quite the catch back in his day.
“Are you... Mr. Harrison...?” she ventured.
Carter appraised her. “Twenty years fly by just like that. You were just a tot back then, and now look at you – all grown up. You really do look a lot like your mother.”
Cassie's curiosity piqued; “I heard that my mother once saved your life?”
""Yeah, you wouldn't guess by looking at me now, but I was dirt poor back in the day, buried in gambling debts. Thank goodness I met your mom; working for her turned things around."" Carter Harrison reflected on the past with a hint of a smile on his face.

""It's a shame... my mom passed away so young,"" she said with regret.

""Yeah, I never understood why your mom suddenly went to some foreign country. People said it was an accident, but I've always had the feeling she was lured there on purpose. If not, she wouldn't have met her end in that hurricane..."" Carter Harrison's expression revealed a sudden pain.

Cassie's mind reeled. ""Are you suggesting my mom was murdered?""

""Well, your grandparents were kept in the dark, but I was right there working with her,"" Carter's eyes hardened. ""I did some digging afterwards, and I think those responsible might be in New York.""

It felt like a heavy weight was pressing on Cassie — the death of her grandmother, her mother's death. As if some force was pushing her to grow up fast.

""Don't put too much pressure on yourself. Take time to grow. To avenge your mother, you're not nearly strong enough yet,"" Carter consoled her."
