Chapter 1410 She Is My Wife
"No need, Mom wants us to hit up this small fashion event tonight. We'll meet Nola Skye there and ask her to help design the wedding dress and suit," Laura said, sounding pretty flat.
"Alright, I'll make sure to pick you up on time. By the way, how was Maeve last night?"
"She wasn't feeling well and fussed all night," Laura replied, then hung up the phone, clearly irritated.
Michael ran his hand through his hair, feeling frustrated.
That evening, he went with Laura to the fashion event.
But Laura kept a cold expression the whole time.
Michael kept apologizing, "Laura, I'm really sorry. I swear, I won't put my phone on silent again. I got totally caught up talking with Cassius about core technologies. I'll take care of Maeve tonight so you can get some rest, okay? Or I can go home and kneel until you forgive me."
"Enough." Laura stopped in her tracks, almost driven mad by his nagging. "Do you know why I'm angry? Because you didn't answer my call. I didn't stop you from going out last night, nor did I interfere with your work. But can you respect me? And is work more important than our child?"
"Don't say that. You and Maeve are both super important." Michael held her small hand. "Maeve is usually fine. I didn't know she would cry last night. If I had known, I would have come back immediately."
Laura opened her mouth, looking at his handsome, delicate face.
She used to trust him a lot, but ever since he lied to her about going to Emerald Lakeside, she didn't know if he was telling the truth anymore.
But she always wondered, what if he was telling the truth?
What if she had misunderstood him?
"Shall we go find Nola? Let her design the most beautiful wedding dress for you." Michael asked, putting his arm around Laura as they walked into the banquet hall.
Nola, being the top wedding designer in Madison, was still very polite to Laura and Michael due to their significant status. She then showed Laura the design sketches for the dress.
Laura liked it at first sight. "I really like this one."
"You have good taste. However, due to the extensive handwork involved, it will take at least two months. After all, I personally handle almost every stitch of the wedding dress," Nola said with a dignified and elegant smile.
"That's fine."
Afterward, Laura added Nola on Facebook, and they chatted a lot about fashion.
Michael, feeling a bit bored, was approached by the event host and went to another reception room.
After chatting with Nola for about half an hour, Nola had to leave to deal with a problem with one of the models for the evening's show.
Laura sat on the sofa, not in a hurry to find Michael, and instead looked out the floor-to-ceiling window at the scenery.
"The model show is about to start. Aren't you going to watch?"
A figure loomed over her from behind.
Laura looked at the reflection in the window, seeing Derek's tall and slender silhouette.
"What are you doing here?"
Laura turned around. Derek, in a dark suit, looked refined and handsome, the soft lighting making him seem gentle and elegant. But she knew better. Derek was a lot like his dad, Carl—reserved, controlled, and introverted.
"I got an invite, so I came," Derek shrugged. "Where's Michael? Not with you? You don't look too happy."
"He went over there." Laura paused, then asked, "Derek, have you heard of someone named Cassius?"
Derek shook his head. "What's up?"
"Can you find out for me?" Laura thought for a moment. "Michael didn't come home last night. He said this Cassius is an expert in lithium batteries."
"You think he's lying to you?" Derek frowned. "I don't think so."
"Don't think what?"
"From what I know about him, he can be pretty blunt and has low emotional intelligence, but he wouldn't lie. He's very straightforward and doesn't hide things."
Laura smiled to herself. She had thought the same.
That's why she still hadn't gotten over Michael's lie from last time.
"Maybe I'm overthinking it. Just check for me, okay? I don't know who else to ask."
Derek laughed. "Alright, I'll help you. I'll have an answer for you by tomorrow morning."
"That fast?" Laura was surprised.
"Of course." Derek shrugged. "I'm in charge of immigration now. It's just a matter of checking the computer."
Laura fell silent.
So it was that simple for Derek.
Seeing her somewhat silly expression, Derek couldn't help but laugh and ruffle her hair. "Have you been worrying about this for a long time? Don't keep things bottled up. You can always ask me for help."
Laura felt a bit touched and was about to speak when Michael's sharp voice suddenly interrupted.
"Derek, what are you doing with your hand?" Michael strode over and slapped Derek's hand away, his tone icy. "She's my wife. Don't touch her."
Derek raised an eyebrow, and Laura, feeling very uncomfortable, interjected, "What are you doing? Derek is your brother."
"Even so, he shouldn't be putting his hand on your head," Michael snorted. Besides, Michael knew exactly what Derek was thinking. "There should be boundaries between men and women."
"Alright, I'll be more careful next time." Derek lowered his eyes, hiding his frustration, and waved his hand before leaving.
Watching his back, Laura really thought Michael was being too petty. "We have no romantic feelings. Can you stop making a big deal out of nothing? I hardly know anyone in Whisperlyn City. If you keep this up, it'll be awkward for me to even greet Derek in the future."
"I'm not saying you can't greet him, just that he shouldn't touch you."
Michael pouted. "I can't help it. I care about you, so I'm possessive."
He almost had "jealous" written all over his face.
What could Laura say to that?
After all, a man's jealousy means he cares about you, right?
