Chapter 1540 I'm Just Mad at You

Rose let out a deep breath. "I was worried before, but seeing you back with a nanny sent by the President's family, I know they must care a lot about you."

Laura switched gears. "Mom, hasn't Dad come back yet?"

"The main office is moving to Whisperlyn City, and there's a ton to handle in Silverwood. Your dad's swamped," Rose said with a heavy sigh. "But the word is out that the Miller Group snagged that land in Whisperlyn City, and now companies are lining up to work with us. We've scored some big deals lately, making him even busier."

"Mom, you need to remind Dad that making money isn't everything. At his age, his health is what matters most," Laura said.

Rose gave her a look, "Your dad just wants to make you proud. Once the Miller Group gets bigger, he wants Michael to see that the woman he didn't appreciate is now worth more than him."

Laura chuckled, but then felt a wave of emotion. "I've actually moved on."

"But your dad hasn't," Rose said, holding Maeve and looking at her cute little face. "Luckily, Maeve looks more like you and not Michael. I wonder when your brother will get married. The girl we introduced to him last time didn't work out either."

Laura was surprised, "Didn't you say last time that there was a chance?"

"Yeah, but a few days ago, your brother ended things with that girl," Rose said regretfully. "She is such a good person. I don't know what kind of woman your brother likes."

Laura thought of Julia.

Coincidentally, after that meal, Elliott soon gave up the idea. Could something have really happened between them?

The room was booked by Derek, so maybe he knew something about it.

But Laura really didn't want to ask Derek.

She hadn't been messaging Derek on Facebook anymore. When she was really bored, she would go with Rose to visit her grandparents.

Laura had been back in Silverwood for less than a week and had already attended a banquet and two dinners on behalf of Rose.

After all, the Miller family was now one of the top families in Silverwood, and they had been frequently interacting with other prominent families. At the end of the year, various partners and friends sent invitations for company banquets, weddings, and birthdays.

After dinner, Rose handed an invitation to Laura, "Silas Collins from the Collins family is getting married tomorrow. You can go in my place. You used to have a good relationship with Noah, and Silas is his cousin. He'll definitely be there."

Laura didn't really want to go. Recently, during the meals, she always saw people giving her disdainful looks, as if her divorce was something disgraceful.

"Laura, I know the gossips, but they're just jealous," Rose saw through her thoughts. "You can't shut their mouths, just live happily yourself."

"Yes, Mom, I understand," Laura nodded.

The next day, while driving to the hotel, she received a Facebook message from Derek: [The weather in Silverwood is getting colder, remember to keep warm.]

Laura: [I know, I don't need your reminder.]

Derek: [You always care more about looking good than staying warm.]

Laura glanced at her outfit.

Yeah, her clothes were fine for staying in the car, but she'd definitely feel a bit chilly outside. As a divorced woman, she had to make a stunning appearance to show that even after the divorce, she was still beautiful.

The traffic light turned green, and Laura didn't reply. After arriving at the hotel, she checked her phone again and saw that Derek had transferred some money to her.

Laura: [No matter how much money you send, there's no chance for us.]

Derek: [Why not? Do you have a health problem?]

Laura: [Nope. I'm perfectly healthy.]

Derek: [I'm healthy too. I'll finish my work tomorrow and fly over to see you in the evening.]

Laura: [No, you can't.]

Derek: [What should I do then? I miss you.]

Laura: [My parents can't accept our relationship. If you come, they'll overthink and I'll be mad at you.]

Derek: [Alright, then let's video call this afternoon. Let me see you, and I'll agree.]

Laura was annoyed. She had said they should keep a distance, and video calling would be awkward.

But it would be worse if he came tomorrow.

She had to agree for now.

Suddenly, there was a knock on the car window. Noah's smiling face appeared, "Your mom said you'd be here for the wedding. Let's go."

"Alright," Laura quickly got out of the car.

Noah looked her up and down, whistled, and teased, "You've gotten even prettier after the divorce. Even I want to pursue you."

"Noah, stop joking. Everyone knows you have high standards," Laura joked back, "By the way, when do you plan to get married?"

"Marriage can't be rushed. It's not about the age. When I meet someone I want to spend my life with, I'll get married," Noah shrugged, "I don't want to ruin a woman's life."

Laura nodded. Despite Noah's carefree appearance, he was always quite measured in relationships.

As they took the elevator up, Noah suddenly said, "There might be someone you don't want to see today."

Laura was taken aback, "Do you mean Benjamin or Isla?"

In Silverwood, those were the ones she least wanted to see.

"The Collins family recently collaborated with Horizon Ventures Group. I heard Isla recently married the chairman of Horizon Ventures Group," Noah said with a meaningful smile. "The chairman is seventy years old. Quite interesting."

Laura's mouth twitched, "Isla married such an old man?"

"She had no other choice. Benjamin didn't want her. Everyone knows the nasty things she did. No wealthy family would marry her, and she wouldn't settle for an average family. As a result, she had to marry an old man," Noah said with a mocking smile.

Laura was speechless. She wondered how Benjamin felt about the once supposedly kind and pure Isla marrying a seventy-year-old man for wealth.

Benjamin probably felt like a fool.

But it had nothing to do with her anymore.
