Chapter 1450 Bernice is Afraid of Water

"After Fiona went to Bernice's place, she found her passed out with a fever, soaking wet," Max sighed. "She's in the hospital now. All our plans for the week are shot, and we're looking at losing millions."

Lucas paused before saying, "I saw she was drunk and tried to sober her up by dunking her head in the sink."

Max almost cursed. "Damn it." He knew Lucas could be harsh, but usually, it was just words. Hearing that he actually messed with a woman, especially one as beautiful as Bernice, was rare. Normally, he'd just get bored and ignore them.

"You didn't know Bernice is terrified of water?" Max said. "She always uses a stunt double for water scenes. And you dunked her head in it. This is bad."

Lucas's face was unreadable. "Is it really that serious?"

"Fiona told me she almost drowned once, so she has a phobia. I'm heading to the hospital. She's our biggest asset right now," Max said and hung up.

Lucas leaned against the sink, remembering Bernice at the club, trembling and scared.

So, she was afraid of water.

Bernice, who could stab herself with a knife, was scared of water.

No wonder she freaked out.

He lit a cigarette, his expression cold.

After finishing it, he wrapped himself in a towel, took a quick shower, and drove to the hospital.

By the time he got there, word about Bernice had spread.

Walking in with a mask on, he overheard some nurses talking.

"I heard Bernice was admitted. Is it true?"

"Yeah, someone in the ER saw her. She had a fever."

"I love Bernice. Wish I could get her autograph."

"Forget it. Her room's sealed off, and we're supposed to keep it quiet. Unless you want to get fired."

Lucas headed straight to the ER.

Max had just arrived, and Fiona and the assistant were there too. They looked surprised to see Lucas.

"How is she?" Lucas asked, looking at Bernice on the bed.

She was still out, her face pale, an IV in her hand.

He found it ridiculous.

Was this necessary? He was careful not to drown her, just wanted to teach her a lesson.

It was a harsh lesson, but Lucas realized he liked it better when Bernice stood up to him, argued with him.

In his eyes, Bernice was a thorny rose. How could she be so fragile?

"The doctor said her fever hit over 104 degrees," Fiona said.

"That's not that high," Lucas replied flatly.

Fiona was speechless. If Lucas wasn't her boss, she would've cursed him out.

Max patted Fiona's shoulder. "Bernice took fever meds, but the doctor said she might be in shock, so she's still out."

The ward went dead silent. Lucas didn't say a word, and no one else dared to either.

Fiona and the assistant kept sneaking glances at Lucas, trying to figure out what he was planning.

They'd heard the rumors about Lucas wanting Bernice, but nothing had come of it, so they hadn't paid much attention. They definitely didn't expect him to show up tonight.

Finally, Max couldn't take it anymore and told the assistant, "You stay here and keep an eye on her. Let me know if she wakes up."

After giving instructions, Max turned to Lucas. "You wanna head out together?"

"I'm staying on duty tonight," Lucas said flatly.

Max was confused. The hospital was his, and he still had to be on duty?

But Max didn't bother asking and just left.

Lucas stood there for a bit, then left too, but he didn't go home. Instead, he headed to the internal medicine department of the inpatient ward.

The on-duty doctor was surprised to see him. "Dr. Nelson, what brings you here tonight?"

"A patient just had surgery today. I'm a bit worried," Lucas said, sitting down at the desk.

"Dr. Nelson, you're really dedicated," the doctor said admiringly.

Lucas ignored him, looked over some medical records, and then played with his phone for a while.

At one in the morning, Lucas went back to the ER.

Fiona had already left, and only the assistant was there, dozing off by the bed.

Lucas checked the IV bottle, which was almost empty. He reached out, removed the needle, and hooked up a new bottle of medication.

Bernice suddenly stirred but didn't wake up. She was muttering like she was in a nightmare.

Lucas bent down to listen and heard her repeatedly saying, "Save me, save me! I don't want to die, I don't want to die!"

Her face showed pain, and she was even sweating.

The assistant woke up, startled to see Lucas there.

Lucas ignored the assistant's look and gently patted Bernice's face, trying to wake her up.

But she wouldn't wake up.

Her face started turning blue.

Lucas's expression changed, and he quickly inserted a nasal oxygen tube. Her color improved a bit.

Lucas then sat in the chair beside her. The assistant, seeing his stern face, was on edge the whole time.

Bernice had a dream.

In the dream, she was running away and fell into the sea, the cold water swallowing her, suffocating her.

She even saw her own body floating in the middle of the sea.

She was dead.

She had finally died.

She knew she couldn't keep Bernice's body forever. She was Nina, just a wandering soul in this world.

Where do the dead go?

But she wasn't ready.

She wasn't ready to die just like that.

Her parents' revenge wasn't taken, Megan wasn't dead, how could she face her parents in the afterlife?

No, she didn't want to die.

She struggled desperately, swimming upwards with all her might.

When she finally broke through the water, she saw a glimmer of light.

Then, she heard an excited voice, "Thank goodness, you're awake. You scared me to death."

Bernice's unfocused eyes finally regained clarity. At first, her mind was sluggish, but after a while, she recognized her assistant, Gabriella Jade.
