Chapter 529
The question lingered in the air, a specter of regret: should she have come tonight?
Liam, who had been a silent sentinel at the door, found himself unable to remain detached. His gaze was drawn to Cassie's trembling, solitary figure, and a pang of sympathy twisted his heart.
"Joseph," he finally voiced, breaking his silence, "you've gone too far. Cassie is your wife, after all. You have a family now. It's the dead of night, and instead of being at home, you're here, ensconced with another woman in a private room. Have you spared a thought for Cassie's feelings?"
Joseph, wearied by the confrontation, shot a glance at Cassie. "Who was I hugging?" He retorted, "Did Liam bring you here? Haven't you learned your lesson from him yet? He's just stirring the pot. Why do you always gravitate towards those who seek to sabotage our relationship?"
"Who's stirring the pot? Have you lost your mind?" Liam's patience snapped, his anger flaring.
"Let's go," Cassie murmured, clutching at Liam's arm. Exhaustion weighed heavily on her. She should never have come.
"Who gave you permission to touch him?" Joseph's voice cut through the tension, his long strides carrying him to Cassie's side. He yanked her away from Liam, his words a warning, "Liam, I advise you to keep your distance from her."
In the periphery, Megan watched the scene unfold, her face a mask of frozen composure. Her fist clenched, a silent testament to the jealousy she was struggling to conceal.
"You want Liam to keep his distance, but have you done the same with Megan?" Cassie retorted, shaking off Joseph's grip. Her voice dripped with scorn, "Joseph, if you wanted to reconcile with Megan, you could have been upfront about it. I didn't beg you to be with me. You claimed you were working late or treating an illness, but is this your idea of deception? Do you realize how revolting it was to see you lying on Megan's chest?"
Joseph was taken aback, his brow furrowing in confusion.
At that moment, Megan stepped forward, her voice soothing, "Joseph, let me explain everything." She handed Cassie a business card, "I'm Nyasia, the psychiatrist in charge of Joseph's treatment. I'm trying to help him overcome his mental trauma, but he's been unmanageable. I was merely trying to calm him down."
Cassie accepted the card, her mind reeling. She hadn't expected Megan to be the renowned psychologist Nyasia Lucas she had heard about. If Cassie allowed Megan to continue treating Joseph, there was a chance she might use her influence to steal him away.
"She was genuinely treating me. I didn't tell you because I feared misunderstandings and baseless suspicions like this," Joseph admitted, a note of helplessness in his voice.
Cassie looked at him, her face impassive, her voice laced with sarcasm, "So, do you expect me to apologize?" If Joseph dared to demand an apology from both Megan and her, Cassie vowed there would be no future for them.
Joseph fell silent.
"Why should you apologize?" Liam sneered, "Joseph knew full well she was his ex-lover, yet he chose to be alone with her. Any woman would be upset by that."
Cassie glanced at Liam, her eyes filled with a complexity of emotions. It had been a while since she found him agreeable.
Liam offered Cassie a smile, his teeth gleaming white.
Joseph's face darkened as he observed the exchange between Cassie and Liam.
Megan's gentle voice broke the silence, "Let's conclude today's session, Joseph. You should take your wife home."
"Alright," Joseph agreed, his unease palpable. He was reluctant to leave Cassie alone with Liam. As for Megan, he was confident she had her own means of transportation.
As Cassie made her way to the door, she paused to address Megan, "Miss Ray, if it's for Joseph's treatment, I hope you can visit the estate. I apologize for my jealousy. After all, you are a stunning woman and Joseph's ex-lover. I'm merely a pregnant woman. Miss Ray, I trust you can empathize with my feelings."
