Chapter 1455 Don't Be So Shameless
"No, Megan was whispering on purpose so Laura couldn't catch it on tape," Bernice said, shaking her head. "When I was a kid, I lived near Esmeralda. She was super nice, and I used to eat at her place a lot. Nina was my friend, and she died in such a horrible way. Megan even killed her whole family."
Lucas felt a sudden tightness in his chest, getting more and more annoyed. His voice turned icy. "So what? Are you saying if I kill Megan, you'll sleep with me?"
Bernice looked him straight in the eye and said firmly, "I know how you feel about me. You wouldn't do that."
"Don't sell yourself short." Lucas smirked. He said it, but he actually respected her. At least she was more self-aware than the other women who thought they could win his heart.
"Megan's got Michael backing her. Michael's your buddy and not just any guy. Someone as sharp as you wouldn't ditch a friend over a woman," Bernice said calmly.
Lucas didn't argue. He was definitely annoyed with Michael, which is why they hadn't talked much lately. But he didn't want things to get too messy, especially since Michael's status had changed.
He got where Bernice was coming from. "Don't worry, even if I don't help you, Joseph will step in."
"You got it wrong. I never really thought about revenge. Sure, I hate Megan, but even Laura and Cassie couldn't take her down. I'm not that cocky. I'm just really curious about Megan," Bernice said.
She added, "There's no problem with me meeting her, right? I'm curious about what kind of woman could make Laura, Cassie, and Nina suffer so much."
Lucas's perfect, handsome face moved a bit closer to her. "Meeting Megan is easy; she's in this hospital. But if you want my help, you gotta show some appreciation."
The look in his eyes was clear. "I can tell you, if you go alone, you won't even get close. Michael's got her covered with bodyguards everywhere."
"He's a bad guy," Bernice said bluntly, "No wonder Laura wants to divorce him."
"I agree." Lucas nodded.
Bernice sneered inside, 'What right do you have to agree? You're even worse than Michael.'
But she got Lucas's hint. She really didn't want to kiss him again. God knows how many times she brushed her teeth after yesterday. "Mr. Nelson, I can't say you're chasing me, and I don't have that kind of pull. But even if you're interested in me, you can't expect to get something for nothing. Give me some benefits first."
"So you're saying if I let you meet Megan, you'll let me kiss you?" Lucas thought out loud. "Bernice, you can't fool me. I'm not that easy to trick."
"You're too calculating. It's boring to be with you." Bernice stared at him for a bit, then leaned in and kissed him.
Lucas was still mulling over her words when she kissed him. He didn't hesitate, grabbing the back of her head. Having done it once yesterday, it was smoother today.
In the past, he wasn't into kissing. The idea of four unfamiliar lips touching seemed gross to him, especially as a doctor who knew too much.
But now, Lucas was starting to change his mind.
The unique scent and breath of a woman filled his senses, and Lucas kissed her deeply, thoroughly.
He even anticipated her pulling away and held her tighter to prevent it.
It wasn't until Lucas had kissed her breathless that he let her go.
Lucas stared at her slightly swollen red lips and flushed face, feeling a bit unsatisfied and puzzled. Her kissing skills were far from proficient. Wasn't she supposed to have been kept as a lover by men before? How could she be so inexperienced?
"Is that enough?" Bernice asked calmly.
Lucas then noticed her eyes, cold and indifferent, not at all like someone who had just experienced a passionate kiss. A wave of anger surged in his heart. "Bernice, did you feel nothing when I kissed you just now?"
Bernice opened her mouth, initially wanting to say, 'I felt a bit worried, afraid your mouth was too dirty and I'd get sick.' But thinking he was still useful, she casually replied, "No feeling at all."
"If you felt nothing, let's do it again. I guarantee you'll feel something." Lucas leaned in, his arm around her shoulder.
"Bernice, here's your water." Gabriella suddenly walked in. Seeing the usually aloof Lucas clinging to Bernice like a rogue, she was so shocked that she dropped the cup. "Sorry, my stomach hurts. I'll leave now."
Gabriella quickly slipped away.
Bernice expressionlessly pushed Lucas's hand away. "Mr. Nelson, don't be so shameless. I gave you what you wanted, but I haven't even seen Megan yet. You're pushing your luck. You don't want a bad deal, and neither do I."
Lucas asked curiously, "But you've already kissed me. Aren't you afraid I won't take you to see Megan if I'm not satisfied?"
"I'd be disappointed, but I have to cut my losses in time," Bernice replied. "Mr. Nelson, you're in the business world. You should understand that sometimes not cutting your losses can make things worse."
"You're right." Lucas smiled, his lips curling. He was handsome, and his smile could be mesmerizing.
Bernice remembered when she was still Nina, young and naive, she was also attracted by his smile. But now, she felt nothing because she understood that a man who smiled a lot wasn't necessarily kind-hearted. Some people, the more they smiled, the more cold-blooded they were.
"When you're done with your IV, I'll take you to see Megan." Lucas took out his phone. "Add me on Facebook, and contact me when you're done."
Bernice added him, and Lucas stood up. "I have to do my rounds. I'll contact you later."
Back in the internal medicine department, Lucas checked on a few patients he had personally operated on. Returning to his office, he opened Bernice's Facebook profile. There wasn't much content, mostly activities in the entertainment industry or magazine photos.
He clicked on a photo from a few days ago, taken at an outdoor event. She was wearing a white lace dress, her figure graceful.
Bernice was beautiful, even her wind-blown hair seemed alluring.
He considered himself used to seeing beautiful women, but he quietly admired the photo for a while. After a moment, he remembered it was winter now. Bernice must have been cold wearing that to an event, no wonder she had a fever yesterday.
