Chapter 508
Cassie remained silent, her disbelief palpable. "Walter," she finally managed to utter, "are you certain that Joyce is dead?"
"Indeed," Walter affirmed. "The forensic doctor and the appraisers are all our people. They are not prone to mistakes. Cassie, it appears you may have been mistaken."
Mistaken? Could she truly have been mistaken? Everyone had claimed that Nina had deceived her. Yet, there was something about Joyce that felt familiar, especially her eyes. Why then, did Joseph's report confirm that this was indeed the real Joyce?
Cassie's mind raced. Perhaps Olivia had discovered Cassie's knowledge of the truth and, in response, released the real Joyce while continuing to impersonate her. If Olivia had been pretending to be Joyce, it stood to reason that she had the real Joyce in her possession.
The more Cassie pondered, the more plausible it seemed. She promptly dialed Laura's number. "I need to know, did you encounter anyone while obtaining the paternity test? Did you disclose any information?"
"You instructed me to be cautious. I didn't divulge anything to anyone, except for procuring Robert's hair and enlisting Elliott's assistance. But you're familiar with Elliott's character, aren't you?" Laura responded.
Cassie's brow furrowed. She trusted Elliott. "Did anyone see you at the paternity testing center? Perhaps someone who was once close to Olivia?"
"I don't believe so... Wait, I remember now. I ran into Benjamin and Isla at the hospital."
"Isla," Cassie murmured the name. "Olivia was acquainted with quite a few socialites in Madison, and the Tarro family held some influence there. Isla even attended Arthur and Olivia's engagement party."
"Do you suspect Isla?" Laura sounded taken aback.
"Have Elliott look into it. On the day you encountered Isla, did she receive a call from New York?" Cassie shared her suspicions with Laura, who was visibly shocked. "You believe that Olivia received the information ahead of time and made preparations?"
"Indeed. The person pulling the strings orchestrated a divide between Joseph and me. Joseph and Michael had a falling out, and even the Zenith family was torn apart."
"Nina is the most pitiful of us all. She likely did nothing wrong, yet she's condemned to a lifetime in prison," Laura mused. "I hope it's not Isla."
"Olivia must have fled, but her whereabouts remain unknown," Cassie admitted, her smile tinged with bitterness.
"That wretch!" Laura seethed.
After ending the call, she promptly booked the earliest flight back to Madison.
Upon her arrival, Elliott forwarded Isla's call records to Laura. She quickly discovered that Isla had received a call from New York mere minutes after their encounter at the hospital. Everything was unfolding as Cassie had predicted. It was Isla who had informed Olivia, aiding her escape.
Laura hailed a taxi from the airport, heading straight for Benjamin's company where Isla had been employed all along.
