Chapter 1040 Jealousy

After the cake was cut, Marigold handed the first piece to Cassie. "Mrs. Foster, our servant was rude earlier. Please don't take offense."

She made sure to emphasize "Mrs. Foster" loudly.

Everyone knew what Marigold was up to.

Cassie took the cake with a casual smile. "I didn't mind at all, thank you, Ms. Dixon. You and Lydia are both so polite. Just now, Lydia even called me Ma'am."

Lydia, suddenly mentioned, looked momentarily stunned.

A hint of amusement flashed in Joseph's eyes as he raised an eyebrow. "Since you're my ex-wife and we're of the same generation, Ms. Dixon and Ms. Stewart should call me Uncle Joseph."

Cassie gave him an approving look, appreciating his cooperation.

Joseph rarely saw Cassie look at him so playfully, making him smile even more brightly.

Marigold almost smashed the cake in anger but held back and said to Joseph, "Alright then, I'll call you Uncle Joseph. In TV shows, don't girls always have sweet romances with Uncle Joseph?"

Joseph replied indifferently, "Too bad reality isn't a TV drama."

"No worries. There's plenty of time," Marigold said directly.

From then on, she continuously showered Joseph with attention, drawing envious glances from many young men.

"Uncle Joseph, I toast to you." Marigold approached with a glass of red wine. "Thank you for attending my birthday party. This is the happiest birthday of my life."

Everyone was watching them.

Joseph couldn't refuse, so he lightly clinked glasses with Marigold and took a sip.

As he put down the glass, he noticed Cassie turning away, the cake left untouched.

He wanted to follow her, but Marigold's friends blocked his way. By the time he managed to get through, Cassie was nowhere to be seen.

When Cassie returned to the hall, she looked around but didn't see David. Instead, she ran into Laura.

"Are you looking for David? He's playing cards with Ralph and some other officials," Laura said with a complex expression. "He is impressive. Look at all the business moguls here tonight, and he's the only one who can mix with Ralph and those officials at the same table."

"Got it," Cassie replied nonchalantly.

"What are you thinking about?" Laura glanced at her. "You're not jealous of Joseph and Marigold, are you?"

"Are you crazy?" Cassie snapped. She admitted she was a bit angry seeing Marigold clinging to Joseph, but it wasn't jealousy. "I just don't want Marigold to be Sophia and Oliver's stepmother."

"Megan can't be the stepmother. Marigold can't either. Who do you want as them stepmother?" Laura teased.

"I think Marigold is scheming at such a young age. She even tried to have a servant push me into the water earlier, but I was prepared," Cassie said irritably.

Laura's expression changed. "She's that arrogant. You're my friend, after all. That's too disrespectful. I'll talk to Ophelia."

"Forget it." Cassie stopped her. "After all, I'm just your friend. The Dixon family and the Jude family are partners. No one wants to create conflict now."

"True. Marigold can't be Sophia and Oliver's stepmother." Laura agreed. "So you need to keep an eye on Joseph and not let Marigold take him away."

Cassie felt inexplicably exhausted.

In the garden, Joseph finally managed to slip away when Marigold was distracted.

But soon, he felt unusually hot and realized something was wrong.

He had experienced this before and quickly understood that his drink had been spiked with an aphrodisiac.

He thought, 'It must have been Marigold. How shameless of her, and she is so young.'

Joseph hurried towards the villa's entrance, but before he could get close, he saw two of Marigold's friends guarding the door. If he went out now, he would definitely be caught.

He cursed in his mind, 'Damn it.'

As his body grew hotter, someone suddenly patted his back.

He turned around to see Derek, who looked at him in surprise. "Joseph, what's wrong? Your face is so red."

"My drink was spiked," Joseph said bitterly.

Derek was stunned. "It must have been Marigold."

"Yes." Joseph's breathing was heavy, and he was already very uncomfortable. "I guess Marigold is looking for me now."

"Come with me." Derek led Joseph to a guest room on the second floor. "The Dixon family arranged for me to stay here tonight. You can hide in the bathroom for now."

"Thanks." Joseph couldn't care about anything else at this point. He was so hot, as if a volcano in his body.

He rushed into the bathroom and splashed cold water on his face, but it didn't help.

Derek stood outside the bathroom door for a while, then called Laura.

Downstairs, Laura answered Derek's call and said to Cassie, "Derek wants me to take you upstairs. He probably wants to talk about David."

"Okay." As Cassie went upstairs, she saw Marigold coming in, looking around as if searching for something.

She had a hunch that Marigold was looking for Joseph.

"Cassie, hurry up," Laura urged.

"Okay." Cassie followed her upstairs.

The Dixon family's villa was large, with over ten rooms on the second floor.

She and Laura entered the innermost room, and Derek came over to close the door.

"What are you doing, being all mysterious?" Laura laughed. "So, what did David want to talk about tonight?"

Derek smiled awkwardly. "I didn't bring you up here for that. Mrs. Brooks, please come with me."

Cassie followed him to the bathroom door.

Through the door, she could vaguely hear heavy breathing, a sound so familiar it made her blush.

Realizing what was happening, she turned to leave, but Derek blocked her. "Mrs. Brooks, I had no choice. Joseph was set up by Marigold, and now she's looking for him everywhere. If she finds him, she'll definitely..."

Derek paused, but Cassie got it from his embarrassed expression.

Laura was also stunned, stammering, "Is Joseph in there?"

Derek nodded helplessly.

Cassie, annoyed, said, "He can just take a cold shower. Why involve me? We're divorced. Besides, if Marigold comes in, you can just block her. Why drag me into this?"
