Chapter 503
"Arrange for someone to escort Joyce for a paternity test immediately. Her parents are still alive, aren't they? I can assure you, she is Olivia," Cassie proposed, her tone firm and unyielding.
She paused for a moment, allowing her words to sink in before continuing, "It's crucial we act before we alert her. The person who saved her life and delivered her to you undoubtedly has ulterior motives."
Joseph nodded in agreement. Without wasting a moment, he dialed Walter's number. "Detain Joyce immediately. I want a paternity test conducted between Joyce and Ray within the next twenty-four hours," he ordered.
A pang of disappointment tugged at Cassie's heart. Despite presenting him with the report, Joseph still didn't trust her words completely. He needed to verify the information himself to be fully convinced. However, she took solace in the fact that everything she had said was the truth.
At two o'clock in the morning, Joseph's phone rang, jolting him awake. It was Walter. "Joseph, there's been an incident. Joyce is dead," he reported, his voice heavy with regret.
Joseph shot up in bed, his heart pounding. "What?" he exclaimed, his voice barely a whisper.
"I had her confined in a house in the suburbs. Early this morning, one of the guards chased after someone attempting to rescue Joyce. Upon his return, he found two other guards unconscious, and the house was ablaze. Joyce was retrieved, but she didn't survive the fire," Walter explained, frustration seeping into his tone. "I suspect the person intended to kill Joyce, not save her."
"I'm on my way," Joseph replied, hanging up the phone. He hastily got dressed and drove to the scene.
Upon his arrival, he spotted Michael standing in front of a body bag, his eyes red and swollen from crying. Spotting Joseph, Michael charged at him, his fist raised.
"Stay calm," Joseph warned, catching his fist mid-air.
"How can I? Why did you imprison Joyce? You killed her!" Michael roared, his voice echoing with anger. "She might not have meant anything to you compared to Cassie, but she was Megan's sister. She was an innocent girl."
"She might not be Joyce," Joseph retorted, his voice devoid of emotion.
Michael scoffed, disbelief etched on his face. "I'm not blind, okay? I can recognize her even if half of her face was burned."
" Cassie conducted a paternity test between Joyce and Robert. The results suggest that Olivia underwent cosmetic surgery to become Joyce," Joseph explained, his brows furrowed. "I arrested Joyce to uncover the truth."
"Are you telling the truth?" Michael asked, skepticism lacing his voice.
"Would I lie to you?"
As Joseph finished speaking, Walter approached them. "Joseph, the testing center confirmed that Joyce and Ray are biologically related," he announced.
"Joseph, you son of a bitch!" Michael yelled, landing a punch on Joseph's face.
Joseph staggered backward, barely managing to stay on his feet. Anger flared in his eyes. "Are you certain there was no mistake?"
"It's Lucas's hospital, there shouldn't be any errors. The doctor will also examine Joyce's body later to determine whether she underwent any cosmetic surgery," Walter reassured him.
"Alright," Joseph conceded, rubbing his temples. "Find the person who sent the rescuers last night."
"Is that necessary? It must be Cassie. You're still defending her," Michael snapped, his voice hoarse. "She's malicious. Joyce never tried to seduce you, but Cassie always wanted to destroy her."
" Cassie is not like that," Joseph defended. "She must have been deceived by someone."
"Even if she was deceived, it's because she's foolish," Michael retorted.
"Michael, have you had enough?" Joseph's patience was wearing thin.
"No. I've always tolerated Cassie because she's your wife, but I can't stand it anymore," Michael bellowed.
"Stop!" Lucas's voice cut through the tension as he stepped out of his car.
"I won't forget this. I won't spare whoever is behind this, even if Joseph wants to protect them," Michael warned before storming off.
"What do you think?" Lucas asked Joseph.
" Cassie might be jealous of Joyce, but I don't believe she's capable of such evil," Joseph replied, his brows furrowed in thought. "If it weren't for Nina claiming Joyce was a fraud, she wouldn't even have suspected..."
