Chapter 338
A week later
Laura Miller accompanied Cassie to the private clinic to have her stitches removed.
Lucas came out to the parking lot to greet them himself. This was Cassie's first time meeting him, and she must admit Joseph's friends were all strikingly handsome.
Lucas, tall and gentle-spoken, clad in a white coat and glasses, had an easygoing and approachable air about him with a smile like a warm breeze. Still, his thin lips suggested a cold-hearted nature.
Laura Miller mused, "Are doctors all model-gorgeous these days? Put a camera on them, and they'd fit right into a Hollywood photo shoot."
Dr. Lucas grinned, "You're too kind, Miss Miller. Shall we go? I've arranged for the doctor to see you now."
Cassie felt awkward. "You didn't have to trouble yourself; I could have gone on my own," especially since it’s a personal matter being treated in the OB-GYN department.
Shaking his head with a smile, Lucas insisted, "No way. Joseph personally called to make sure I took care of this."
Cassie couldn't help but recall the phone call from the previous night. Joseph reminded her to get her stitches removed. Was he genuinely concerned about her?
As they were about to take the elevator, a familiar female voice called out from behind, "Lucas..."
They turned around. Cassie's eyes narrowed slightly to see Luna there, accompanied by an exquisite woman in her thirties, her makeup meticulous, exuding a fierce and statuesque aura that reduced Luna to the role of a sidekick.
"Luna, Auntie, it's been a while," Lucas greeted her respectfully. "You're back!"
"Yes," Mabel replied with indifference, glancing briefly at Cassie and Laura, both in their young twenties and appealing in appearance. Aware of Lucas's reputation as a ladies' man, she dismissed them as frivolous and didn't bother to give them a second look.
Luna, on the other hand, gasped dramatically, "Cassie, what are you doing here? Oh, I get it. That land deal you scooped up, you must be cozying up to the Junior Seaton."
"Calm down, Luna. Lucas is not someone you can mess with. Think before you slander others," Cassie retorted calmly.
Luna rolled her eyes and said to Mabel, "Auntie, this is the illegitimate daughter my dad had on the side."
Laura burst out defensively, "Illegitimate daughter, my foot! You're younger than she is. Your mother did everything she could to marry into the Seaton family."
"Who are you to step in?" Luna snapped back. "Cassie, you're just like your mother! You lack decency. I'm warning you, don't embarrass our family."
Cassie frowned, but before she could respond, Lucas intervened with a cautionary tone, "Miss Luna, mind your words. Cassie is a friend of a friend, and if you keep making such defamatory remarks, my friend might have a problem with you."
Luna seemed taken aback by Lucas's defense of Cassie and said in a wounded tone, "But Lucas, I'm Joseph's girlfriend, and Joseph's a good friend of yours..."
With a subtle look, Lucas responded, "Is that so? Joseph never mentioned you to me."
Luna was fuming. Mabel said impatiently, "Lucas, I've been feeling stressed because of Liam these past couple of days, and my chest feels tight. Could you take me to get checked?"
Lucas was in a tight spot; Mabel was a senior family member, and it was hard to refuse such a request.
Cassie chimed in, "Lucas, you go with them. I can head up on my own."
