Chapter 279
"Cassie shot Joe a look of disbelief, only to see the amusement in his eyes and his cold, mocking smile.
Gritting her teeth, she retorted, ""For the record, I'm a few months older than you, so clearly, my mom's relationship with my dad started first. Watch your mouth, and, for your information, I wasn't hitting on him.""
""Cassie, do you mean to say that Joe's framing you?"" Luna's rage erupted. ""Joe is a man of high stature. He’s practically untouchable, and you're just mud on the ground. I've seen too many low-lives like you trying to reach for the stars.""
Cassie's gaze fell, her lashes quivered gently.
Joe felt an involuntary crease of irritation in his brow. His intention to toy with her was suddenly mixed with annoyance. He had been indifferent to Luna before, but now all he could feel was disdain for her lack of poise and class.
""What's all the commotion about?"" Leo and Vera chimed in, drawn by the noise as they entered the scene.
""Mom, Dad, your timing is impeccable. Cassie's actually trying to hit on Mr. Hernandez!"" Luna blurted out in frustration. ""And she's mocking you, Mom. She’s calling you a homewrecker.""
Vera's face turned ashen. The past, which included the reasons behind her marriage to Leo, was a forbidden topic that haunted her. ""Cassie, that's way out of line. Since you've been back, I've treated you generously, haven't I? You're even wearing the designer clothes I bought for you. Ingratitude at its worst!"" she snapped.
Leo furrowed his brow. ""Could there be some kind of misunderstanding?""
""What misunderstanding? Joseph said so himself!"" Luna stamped her foot, indignant. ""She's already engaged, yet she's not behaving properly. It's disgraceful.""
""Engaged?"" Joseph asked with a teasing smile, but only those close to him knew how cold his gaze could look.
""Yes, she's got a fiancé back in Madison,"" Vera quickly interjected. ""He’s just the owner of some small public company—hardly in Mr. Hernandez's league.""
""Is that so?"" Joseph's laugh was low. He had only left Madison for a fortnight, and she was already engaged.
He didn't need to guess—it was probably David.
Thinking about how he had just felt a twinge of softness for her, he suddenly felt incredibly foolish.
She was far more shameless than he had imagined.
""The Chapman family is known for their strict values, and tonight has been quite an eye-opener,"" he noted with a sneer.
After his quiet mockery, Joseph strode towards the exit, pausing briefly beside Leo. ""Leo, I'm taking off. I just can't stay any longer today.""
With those words, he left in long strides.
""Joseph, wait for me!"" Luna called after him, chasing him out.
In the kitchen, a warm glow fell on Cassie's face, revealing a hint of pallor.
Fresh to the Chapman home and still without a strong footing, she found herself cast into the abyss with just a few casual remarks from Joseph.
""Look at the mess you've made,"" Vera trembled with anger. ""Leo, you were the one who insisted on bringing her here. She's undermining her own sister, and now you've angered Mr. Hernandez. I suggest you send her away quickly before Joseph's discontent spreads to the rest of the Chapman family.""
