Chapter 268
"Cassie helped David into bed and tucked him in. Suddenly, David gripped her hand.
Reflected in his dark eyes, it looked like the fireworks were blooming within. “Cassie, are you sure about getting engaged? Don't regret it later.”
“I'm worried you'll be the one with regrets,” Cassie pondered with a furrowed brow. “Next year, I'm moving Peace Group's headquarters to New York to investigate my mother's death. I don’t know how powerful my future enemies will be.""
""I'm with you in this life. I’ll do everything I can to support you,"" David interjected, his tone resolute.
Cassie was taken aback. She remained silent for a long time. How could she even consider rejecting or hurting this man, this version of David that stood before her?
""Thank you.”
After the New Year, Cassie threw herself into her work.
The new condominium development launched by the Peace Group was selling well, and the funds were swiftly recouping.
As dusk approached that day, Cassie was packing up her things, ready to head home, when the reception desk buzzed with a call. “Carter Harrison is here, Cassie. He's brought someone along. He’s asking to see you.”
Cassie was puzzled. Carter had helped her secure her position on the board and then returned to Hudson City. Why had he suddenly showed up?
Five minutes later, the office door swung open.
Carter Harrison arrived at the doorway and, with a respectful gesture of his arm, introduced a man whose presence commanded attention. Tall, with an air of composed elegance, his features were handsome albeit marked by faint lines around the eyes – signs of a man in his prime.
Despite being of a similar age, Carter Harrison’s stature paled in comparison to the dignified aura that surrounded this new arrival.
As the man strode in, his gaze was fixed on her. Flickers of longing, joy, melancholy, and pain seemed to wash over his expression.
""This is..."" Cassie began, baffled.
Carter Harrison interjected, “This is your father, Leo.”
A thunderous realization exploded in Cassie's mind.
She had pondered her biological father before, but his sudden appearance still staggered her. And the name Leo rang a bell.
Wasn’t he one of Madison’s most distinguished figures last year? She remembered the reports: Leo, a scion of New York's esteemed Chapman legacy, renowned not only for his philanthropy but also his exceptional achievements. The Chapmans may not have been the most prominent family initially, but in recent years, they had risen to prominence under Leo’s leadership.
And now, this man stood before her as her biological father.
""It's unbelievable,"" she thought to herself.
“You really look like your mother,” Leo said, his eyes glistening with unshed tears. “I never imagined that she would keep such a secret from me, that she gave birth to my daughter without my knowledge.”
""At that time, the lady only wished for her to grow up safe,"" Carter murmured softly.
“You are right. I was the one who failed,” Leo said, his fists clenched as if haunted by painful memories. “If it hadn’t been for the news about a young female CEO taking over at Peace Group, Isabella's daughter no less, I might have never known about you.”
Cassie, having been through a whirlwind of experiences lately, managed to steady her inner turmoil quickly. “So what brings you to me?”
Her response was calm and detached. Leo hesitated for a moment, but then a hint of nostalgia crept onto his face. “Cassie, you've always been like this, fiercely independent. I want to bring you back to the Chapman household and make up for all the years we've missed.”
“Let's not,” she replied. “You've got your own family and kids now. I'd rather stay out of it.”
Cassie was fed up with family drama. She refused immediately."
