Chapter 196

"At that moment, Cassie sobered up a bit from the shock and hurriedly said, ""You sure you can walk? I'll take you up.""
""No need, I'm not drunk, I can handle my liquor,"" Laura said with a nonchalant wave, staggering into the complex.
Joseph started the car and drove back. As the sleepiness and alcohol washed over Cassie, she dozed off.
Uncertain of how much time had passed, she felt someone gently pick her up. Barely awake, she opened her eyes to the familiar handsome face and thought she was dreaming. Pouting her lips, she wrapped her arms around his neck, ""Joseph, can't you stop being mad? I've missed you so much these past days, I'm so tired, a lot has happened, and I've been needing someone to talk to. Now it's just you and me, you'll always be there for me, right?""
Crying, she clung to him, tears rolling down her cheeks, seeping into his neck.
Joseph was taken aback, she was probably too groggy to realize he had come back.
A slight pain tugged at his heart.
She must've been under a lot of pressure these days, just a girl dealing with so much while he wasn't around.
""Yeah, I'll always be there,"" he whispered back gently.
His tender voice was like a sedative, calming Cassie down as she closed her eyes and fell asleep on his shoulder.
He carried her up the stairs and gently laid her on the bed. Looking at her serene face, he sighed. He'd really fallen for her.
These days without her, he could barely sleep. Just as he thought of taking a shower, a soft knock came from the door.
He pulled it open to find Walter standing outside, speaking in a low voice, ""We need to talk.""
Joseph walked out, closing the door behind him, as Walter handed him a photograph featuring a downtrodden man with a scar on his face. ""Got word that Brandon Wright is looking for you in Madison, probably wants revenge for his sister,"" he said.
""How does he know I'm in Madison?"" Joseph's eyes flickered with a chill.
""Ever since you came to Madison, you've made some big waves, especially with that court appearance against Height Company. Made quite a stir. I managed to keep your name out of the press, but with the internet these days..."" Walter frowned, trailing off and then pondering for a moment before adding, ""This guy's been relentless for the past five years. Should I...""
""No need,"" Joseph interjected sharply, cutting him off.
Walter persisted, concern etched on his face. ""I know you might feel you owe him because of that trial, but he's... he's too extreme, and Miss Brooks could be in danger.""
""Assign someone to protect her,"" Joseph instructed.

The next day, Cassie, clad in her fresh clothes, descended the stairs to find a new, strikingly confident young woman in the living room—with neatly trimmed short hair complementing her impeccable posture.
""Good morning, Miss Brooks. I'm Joe, your bodyguard, and I'm here to ensure your safety.""
Cassie blinked, her face registering confusion as she turned to Joseph, ""You got me a bodyguard?""
""Yeah, with the Brooks family on the rise again, and your streak of bad luck, it's better to have someone watching your back."" Joseph kept the full truth from her, not wanting her to live in fear.
""Joey, you're too good to me,"" Cassie said, recalling her last entanglement in Olivia Brooks's trap at the club. She weighed her options and decided not to object.
""Just remember that,"" Joseph said with a gentle look in his eyes, which swiftly turned cool as he faced Joe. ""Keep her safe. If anyone so much as scratches her, you'll answer to me. And if any guy gets close, I want to know immediately.""
Joe nodded, ""Understood.""
Cassie rolled her eyes at the side, ""Sounds more like surveillance in the guise of protection.""
