Chapter 1593 My Fault

"You should treat it like meeting Carl and me. Weren't you nervous the first time you saw us?" Violet smiled at her nervous demeanor. "Look at you now, so natural, even joking with us."

"That's because we live together and see each other often," Laura said.

Violet laughed, "Think about it this way: your daily life involves having breakfast with the President and First Lady of Madison. So, is there any need to be nervous about meeting the First Lady of Serindale? Serindale is far inferior to Madison in every way."

Laura nodded blankly, realizing it made sense.

"Just be poised and gracious," Violet said gently. "The first time I met those ladies, I was so nervous I couldn't sleep all night. But then I thought, they were probably nervous meeting me too. We're all of similar status; no one is above or below anyone else. We don't need to use our status to make things difficult for others. Just do what you should do."

"Godmother, I finally know who Derek takes after—it's you," Laura said with a smile.

Derek had that same gentle and elegant demeanor as Violet, able to handle any situation with ease.

What Laura admired even more was that despite Violet's high position, she remained humble and didn't have an air of superiority. She even treated her people equally. Laura felt very fortunate to be sitting here, talking with Violet.

"Derek does take after me more." Violet pondered for a few seconds, then nodded with a smile. "I actually don't want Derek to be like his father. The Jude family's ways are too rigid."

This was the first time Violet had mentioned her opinion of the Jude family in front of Laura, making Laura tense up.

"There's no need to be nervous. At this table, Carl is just my husband, and the Jude family is just my husband's family," Violet sighed softly. "Eric only hopes the Jude family will prosper forever, but there's no such thing as an everlasting family. Carl was taught by Eric from a young age, so he can be a bit rigid sometimes."

Laura said softly, "I understand. Who wouldn't want to stay in a high position once they're there? Godmother, don't you want Derek to be like Carl?"

"My view is to go with the flow," Violet said with a dignified expression. "The higher you sit, the heavier the burden. Some positions should be occupied by those who are capable. We can't just think about our own interests; we need to understand what the people need."

Hearing this, Laura felt a deep respect. "Godmother, I've decided to make you my role model."

Violet smiled and took a sip of her porridge. "By the way, I heard you and Derek went out for a late-night snack last night?"

"Yes," Laura said nervously, avoiding eye contact. "I've been away for a few months and haven't had a late-night snack in a long time."

"You two have a good relationship, but it's better not to go out so late next time. It's not very safe."

Violet smiled and then lowered her head to continue eating dinner.

Laura looked up slightly, seeing that Violet had stopped talking. She felt relieved but also a bit guilty.

Violet treated her so well, yet she was deceiving her.

If Violet ever found out the truth, would she be very angry?

Laura suddenly realized she didn't want to make Violet sad or angry.

She genuinely liked Violet.

After returning, Violet sent someone with the schedule and guest list for the charity event the next day.

The information was very detailed, including not just the identities of the attendees but also their interests and hobbies.

Laura was amazed at how important these people were.

"By the way, Magnus, since I'm attending a charity event tomorrow, should I prepare a donation? What's an appropriate amount?"

Magnus smiled secretly at Laura's innocence. "Laura, you don't need to prepare anything. The First Lady will have everything ready. You just need to accompany her."

"Okay, got it."

Laura didn't understand much, so she just followed Violet's lead.

After Magnus left, Laura took a bath and then studied the materials in her room.

Kennedy knew she had important things to do and focused on playing with Maeve.

When Derek came upstairs and reached the bedroom door, he saw Laura lazily curled up in a chair by the floor-to-ceiling window, reading the materials. The room was warm, and she was sitting with her legs curled up, not wearing socks, showing her beautiful feet.

She was very focused.

Derek deliberately slowed his steps as he walked over, staring at the swan-like curve of her neck. Below that was her white cotton nightgown, which was slightly transparent, revealing that she wasn't wearing anything underneath.

At that moment.

Derek clenched his fist and cleared his throat.

Laura looked up blankly, and when she suddenly saw Derek standing next to her, she screamed, dropping the materials on the floor.

"Did I scare you?" Derek quickly touched her forehead. "What are you reading so intently?"

Laura was stunned. When she was little, her grandmother used to touch her forehead like that whenever she was scared.

"Really scared you?" Derek cupped her face. "I didn't expect you to be so focused."

"I'm reading the materials Godmother gave me. I'm accompanying her to a charity event tomorrow," Laura said, punching his chest in annoyance. "You scared me."

"My bad," Derek said, grabbing her hand and kissing it.

Laura instinctively glanced at the door, realizing it was closed.

Her heart tightened. They had slept together, and being alone with him made her even more nervous. "You didn't sleep last night, and you got off work early. Aren't you going to rest? Do you want to collapse?"

"I took a nap in the office at noon. Don't worry, I won't collapse that easily."

Derek squeezed onto the chair.

But it was too cramped for two people, so he simply picked Laura up and sat her on his lap. Then he pressed a button on the wall, and the curtains automatically closed.

"What are you doing?" Laura instinctively jumped.

Her face turned red, filled with resistance.

This was her room, and she couldn't bring herself to make love with him in the Presidential Palace.

"Do you want people outside to see me holding you? Although few people come here at night, it's better to be cautious," Derek said with a smile. "What did you think I was going to do?"
