Chapter 1614 Will You Marry Me Again?
"Not only that, it was Megan who instigated Nathan to break into Laura's house at night, assault her, and beat her up."
Recalling these past events, Joseph said angrily, "Megan said she was dating me, and no matter how bad Nathan's actions were, as long as she pleaded, I would help. I was deceived by her at the time, thinking it was all Nathan's doing."
Michael's body shook as he suddenly remembered something, "And Nathan drugged Laura at my company's new product launch party."
"That was also Megan's doing," Joseph said. "Megan originally wanted to ruin Laura, but it ended up bringing you and Laura together that night."
In front of everyone, Michael suddenly wanted to find a hole to crawl into.
Back then, he actually believed Megan's words. Megan said she didn't know Nathan would do such a thing, and if she had known, she would have stopped him.
And then there was the time Laura was brutally beaten by Nathan.
What did Michael do at that time? He desperately protected Megan and even scolded Laura for being shameless, saying that if she had behaved properly, Nathan wouldn't have bothered her.
Michael blamed everything on Cassie and Laura.
It was as if anyone who hurt Megan was his enemy.
As if Megan was the kindest person in the world.
And what was the result?
Megan used Michael as a tool to hurt others without any scruples.
He was a fool.
Joseph wasn't wrong to scold him, Cassie wasn't wrong, Laura wasn't wrong, and Lucas wasn't wrong either.
No wonder Michael had nothing left now.
"Joseph, Cassie, I'm sorry, I'm really sorry," Michael apologized painfully and hoarsely.
Cassie tightly held Joseph's hand and said indifferently, "You don't need to feel sorry. Your friendship with Joseph ended the moment you stormed into the Hernandez House for Megan."
Michael's body stiffened.
Recalling that moment, it was one of the most unbearable nights for Michael.
Cassie stared at him coldly, "Michael, I've disliked you from the beginning, but for Laura and Joseph's sake, I thought we could let bygones be bygones. But later, I realized you haven't changed at all; you're still as selfish as ever."
"I still remember when I was pregnant, how you attacked me behind my back for Megan. You always tried to drive a wedge between Joseph and me. You're disgusting. Today, we're accusing Megan of being a murderer, but you're no better. If it weren't for you, we might have handed Megan over to the law a long time ago."
"You've always been Megan's accomplice. Everything that's happened to you is your own doing."
"You can love Megan, but you can't love her to the point where you can't tell right from wrong, to the point where you use the Zenith family as a tool, destroying lives." Cassie grew angrier as she spoke, even slapping Michael, "This is what you owe all of us."
Beside them, Bernice, who had been silent, lowered her eyes, her long lashes hiding the tears in her eyes.
But only Bernice knew how much her heart ached at that moment.
Bernice didn't even dare to take a deep breath, fearing it would reveal her emotions.
"I'm sorry, I'm sorry," Michael stood motionless.
Cassie's words left him speechless.
He was so ashamed he wanted to disappear.
If he could turn back time, he would strangle his foolish past self.
"The most useless thing in the world is saying sorry. Fortunately, bad people eventually get their comeuppance." Cassie glanced at Joseph and Bernice, "Since we've finished giving our statements, let's go."
Joseph and Bernice walked out of the police station without a word.
A black SUV pulled up, and Bernice finally looked up, turned around, and hugged Cassie, her voice trembling, "Thank you, thank you."
Revenge in this way might be the best outcome.
Bernice had once thought of using the most brutal methods to get back at Megan, to make her life a living hell.
But that would have dragged Bernice into the abyss as well.
Bernice was especially grateful to Cassie, not just for herself, but for her deceased parents and for Nina, whose body was never found.
No one understood Bernice's pain.
Because no one knew that Bernice was Nina, and her parents had died unjustly.
"No need to thank me; we're all Nina's friends."
Cassie said softly.
Bernice nodded and got into the car without looking back.
She didn't dare look back, fearing she would break down in tears.
It wasn't until the white SUV slowly drove away that Joseph hugged Cassie and apologized deeply, "Cassie, I'm sorry. When you were scolding Michael just now, I realized I wasn't much better in the past."
"You weren't much better, but," Cassie glanced at him, "considering you found Nathan, I forgive you completely. And if it weren't for your efforts, the police might not have reopened the investigation into Esmeralda's death."
"That was my duty. Nathan used to be Megan's most important tool; he knows too much."
Joseph paused and frowned, "But Nathan seems to have offended someone. When my people found him abroad, he was in a terrible state. I thought it would take some effort to get him to testify, but he was more than willing to go to jail rather than stay out there."
"Do you mean he has mental issues?" Cassie was a bit surprised, "Will that affect his testimony?"
"No, although he's been mentally affected, he keeps saying that Megan ruined him. If it weren't for Megan, he wouldn't have lost everything. He hates Megan. I suspect someone else has also troubled him before."
Joseph looked in the direction of Bernice's SUV, "Didn't Bernice kidnap Megan before?"
"You suspect Bernice?" Cassie suddenly understood, "It's not impossible."
"Forget it, it doesn't matter anymore. As long as we achieve our goal, Megan will likely get the death penalty once the case is judged."
After saying this, Joseph suddenly took her hand and knelt on one knee near the busy police station.
Cassie was startled and quickly looked around. They were near the parking lot, and although there weren't many people, some passersby stopped to watch.
She didn't want to be the center of attention and quickly said, "What are you doing? Get up."
"Cassie, listen to me."
Joseph raised his chin slightly, his eyes full of emotion, "Will you give me another chance? I don't want us to continue like this as just lovers. I feel insecure. But now that Megan has been caught and you can let go of your grudges, I want to formally propose to you. On the day Megan is sentenced, will you marry me again?"
